The Rig was designed to help wheelchair users get beyond paved paths. The original vehicle, developed by Zack and Cambry Nelson, used a four-wheel layout and bicycle-derived components; today, Not-A-Wheelchair lists the updated Rig 2WD as a 3,000-watt, 18-mph off-road mobility vehicle. Its advertised 30-mile range is an ideal-conditions estimate, not a promise of what every rider will get.

What is The Rig?

The Rig is an electric, four-wheel mobility vehicle intended for outdoor terrain. Zack and Cambry Nelson developed the original around the goal of sharing outdoor adventures. In its 2020 account, New Atlas described a vehicle made largely from bicycle components, including an aluminum frame, chain-driven e-bike motor, fat tires and dual steering handles.

The current product is The Rig 2WD, part of Not-A-Wheelchair’s lineup alongside the Big Rig 4WD and Giga Rig. The manufacturer’s current product page lists the Rig 2WD at 3,000 watts and 18 mph; these are manufacturer specifications, not independent test results. See the current Rig product page.

These dimensions and capacity figures are useful starting points for a fit and transport discussion, but they do not establish whether the vehicle will work for a particular rider, transfer setup or vehicle. Confirm the current configuration and measurements with the manufacturer.

Why the 2020 Rig figures are different

The original Rig described by New Atlas on August 17, 2020 is not the same specification set as the current Rig 2.0. That article reported a 1,000-watt motor, 10–20 miles of claimed range, a top speed of 12 mph, a 225 lb payload and a weight of 120 lb with suspension and one battery. It also described front and rear independent suspension and a second battery as optional at that time. Those numbers are historical reporting, not current Rig 2WD specifications.

  • User friendly LED console displays time, temperature, miles driven, and trips taken. Adjustable delta tiller with ergonomic, wraparound handles. USB charger built into the tiller for convenient charging of smart phones and portable devices. Durable and stylish rear bumper.

The same 2020 report described an adjustable padded seat, front hydraulic disc brakes and 4-inch-wide fatbike tires. It said the electronics were not waterproof and recommended dry-condition use. Because that warning is dated, consult the current owner manual and manufacturer for present operating and weather guidance rather than treating the 2020 statement as a current rule.

What the range estimate does—and does not—tell you

Not-A-Wheelchair says its range estimates were obtained with pre-production units on relatively flat ground in ideal conditions. Actual range may vary with rider weight, terrain and battery configuration. The manufacturer also says an additional battery option will be available for purchase. The 30-mile figure should therefore be treated as an advertised estimate per battery, not a dependable distance for planning every outing. The manufacturer’s lineup page explains its range qualification.

How to assess whether it fits your needs

Specifications can narrow the questions to ask, but they cannot substitute for an individual fit assessment or an on-terrain evaluation. Before committing, consider:

  • Rider fit and transfer: Compare the stated 18-inch seat width and 250 lb maximum capacity with the rider’s needs. Ask about seat, control and footrest configuration and how transfers work in practice.
  • Access and terrain: Consider the 32-inch vehicle width, ground clearance and suspension travel against the trails, gates, surfaces and turning space you expect to encounter. No specification alone guarantees performance on a particular route.
  • Transport: The listed 160 lb curb weight, 60–66-inch length and 26-inch collapsed height matter when planning storage and loading. Confirm how the selected configuration can be transported and whether your vehicle and any carrier are compatible.
  • Range and battery: Plan around the variability of real terrain and rider weight rather than assuming the advertised range will be reached. Ask the manufacturer about battery configuration and charging for the intended use.
  • Controls and support: Ask for a demonstration and current documentation, including operating and weather guidance, service arrangements and parts availability. The available product specifications do not provide an independent comparative test or individualized medical assessment.

Current price and lineup context

The Rig 2.0 product page currently displays a price of $6,999. Separately, the manufacturer’s comparison labels $5,999 as The Rig’s launch price; that historical launch figure is not the same as the currently displayed product-page price. Both can change. The same comparison lists Big Rig 4WD at a $12,999 launch price and Giga Rig at an estimated $18,000, with several Giga Rig details still marked as forthcoming. Check the manufacturer’s page for the configuration, price and ordering status that apply when you are making a decision.
