Mazda and Ford were closely allied for decades, but they were never the same automaker. Ford became a major Mazda shareholder and influenced its management, then sold down its stake after 2008. As of Mazda’s March 31, 2026 corporate information, Mazda still lists a joint manufacturing venture with Ford, but Ford is not named among Mazda’s ten major shareholders.
How did Mazda and Ford’s relationship begin?
The relationship began in 1979, when Toyo Kogyo—Mazda’s name at the time—formed a capital alliance with Ford to strengthen its business foundation. Mazda’s official history describes the alliance as a way to reinforce the company, not a merger or a change of Mazda’s identity. Ford-commissioned manufacturing expanded across commercial vehicles, transmissions and small passenger vehicles.
When did Ford have the most influence at Mazda?
Ford’s ownership and management influence grew substantially in the 1990s. In 1996, Ford increased its Mazda shareholding from 25% to 33.4%. Mazda links that period to the appointment of its first non-Japanese president and CEO and to business streamlining. The relationship was therefore more than a supplier arrangement, although Mazda remained a distinct automaker.
How did Mazda and Ford work together to build vehicles?
One clear example is AutoAlliance Thailand (AAT), established by Mazda and Ford in November 1995. Production began in July 1998 with the Mazda Fighter/B-Series and Ford Ranger pickup trucks. At the launch, the companies described planned annual capacity of 135,000 vehicles once the plant reached full manufacturing levels; that was a plan reported in 1998, not a current capacity figure. When did Ford sell down its Mazda stake?
Ford reduced its shareholding in stages after the 2008 financial crisis. These percentages are dated milestones reported by Mazda, not a continuous account of Ford’s current ownership:

The historical figures come from Mazda’s 2008 announcement, 2010 announcement and financial filings. Ford’s sell-down ended the management period described in Mazda’s history; it did not mean every operating connection disappeared.

Does Ford own Mazda now?
Mazda’s shareholder table dated March 31, 2026 lists ten major shareholders and does not name Ford. That table does not establish that Ford owns no Mazda shares at all, so it would be too broad to say that Ford has zero ownership. Do Mazda and Ford still work together?
There is at least one documented ongoing corporate connection: Mazda’s affiliate information dated March 31, 2026 lists AutoAlliance Thailand as an equity-method company in which Mazda owns 50.0%. Are Mazda and Ford the same company?
No. The alliance gave Ford a significant ownership stake and management influence during a period of Mazda’s history, but the companies remained distinct automakers. Their history includes shared manufacturing and other cooperation; neither the past alliance nor the currently documented AAT connection makes Mazda a Ford brand.
