The U.S.-market 2024 Kia Sorento is a three-row midsize SUV offered with gasoline, hybrid and plug-in hybrid powertrains. The main decision is which one suits your use: the gas models range from a 191-hp base engine to a 281-hp turbo, while the Hybrid and PHEV trade different combinations of fuel efficiency and electrification. Kia’s prices below are original launch MSRPs, not current used-car values.
What’s different about the 2024 Sorento?
For this model year, the Sorento’s defining choice is its powertrain. The LX and S gasoline trims use a naturally aspirated engine; EX and higher gasoline trims get a turbocharged engine. The Hybrid pairs a smaller turbo engine with an electric motor, and the PHEV adds plug-in capability. Trim names, equipment and specifications differ by market; this review covers the U.S. model.
Kia describes the X-Pro as the off-road-oriented gasoline trim, with unique 17-inch wheels, all-terrain tires and increased towing capacity. The available specifications do not establish a complete numerical tow-rating table, so check the vehicle’s exact configuration and owner information before towing.

Kia announced the gasoline Sorento prices on January 30, 2024. Every figure in the table excludes the $1,375 destination charge and is an original MSRP—not a current asking price or a prediction of what a used vehicle should cost.

These figures come from Kia America’s 2024 gasoline pricing announcement, 2024 Hybrid overview and 2024 PHEV announcement. When shopping used, compare current local listings and account for mileage, condition, equipment and location rather than treating launch MSRP as today’s value.
Engines, power and fuel economy
Engine output differs substantially across the lineup. Kia’s published specifications identify the gasoline engines and outputs; its hybrid announcements provide EPA estimates for the electrified versions.

Size, seating and everyday practicality
Kia lists the gasoline Sorento at 189.6 inches long, 74.8 inches wide and 66.7 inches high; height can vary with equipment or roof rack. Kia’s Hybrid and PHEV overview pages instead list 189.0 inches long, 74.8 inches wide, 66.7 inches high and a 110.8-inch wheelbase. These measurements are for the respective powertrain pages and should not be combined as if they described one identical configuration.

Kia’s Hybrid overview lists a maximum six-passenger layout with second-row captain’s chairs. Three rows provide flexibility, but the third row and the cargo area behind it are the usual space trade-offs in a smaller three-row SUV. For context—not as a test of the 2024 model—an Edmunds comparison republished by AP examined the 2025 Sorento Hybrid and 2025 Toyota Highlander Hybrid. It characterized both as less cargo-capable behind the third row than larger three-row SUVs, said the Sorento was easier to park because of its smaller exterior, and gave the Highlander the cargo-space advantage behind the third row.
2024 Sorento safety ratings and test-year context
The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) labels the 2024 Sorento a Top Safety Pick. Its vehicle page lists Good ratings for small overlap front, original moderate overlap front, updated side, standard vehicle-to-vehicle front crash prevention and standard pedestrian front crash prevention. Headlights and LATCH ease of use are rated Acceptable. In the updated side test, the driver pelvis measure is Acceptable while the other listed injury measures are Good.

The ratings do not all come from the same model year. IIHS says the small-overlap test used a 2021 Sorento and applies to 2021–26 models; the original moderate-overlap test also used a 2021 vehicle and applies to 2021–25. The updated side test used a 2024 Sorento and applies to 2024–26. IIHS notes that reinforcement changes and rear-seat restraint additions began with 2024 models. An Edmunds test republished by AP compared the 2025 Sorento Hybrid with the 2025 Toyota Highlander Hybrid, not the 2024 Sorento. On Edmunds’ test track, the AWD Sorento Hybrid completed 0–60 mph in 7.6 seconds, versus 8.2 seconds for the tested Highlander Hybrid. The comparison describes the Kia as stronger on performance and value, while the Toyota has a space advantage. Those are findings from that specific 2025 hybrid comparison, not a firsthand assessment of the 2024 lineup or a consensus verdict. Read the AP-republished Edmunds comparison.

Should you buy a used 2024 Kia Sorento?
The lineup makes the most sense when you match the powertrain to your priorities. The gas LX and S have the lower-output engine, while the turbo gasoline trims offer more power. The Hybrid has Kia-reported combined estimates of 37 mpg for FWD and 34 mpg for AWD; the PHEV combines a 34-mpg hybrid-operation estimate with 79 MPGe. The three-row layout adds seating flexibility, but buyers who regularly need substantial space behind the third row should compare actual cargo needs and competing vehicles.
For a used example, evaluate the specific car rather than its original sticker: compare local listings, verify trim and drivetrain, inspect condition and mileage, and confirm the vehicle’s equipment. If buying accessories, Kia’s 2024 accessory listings include carpet floor mats.
