The Mazda R360 Coupé was a tiny rear-engined car with a 356 cc air-cooled V-twin—but the available Mazda history does not establish that the engine came from a motorcycle. What was the rear-engined Mazda?
It was the Mazda R360 Coupé, Toyo Kogyo’s (now Mazda’s) first four-wheeled passenger-car model. Mazda says it announced the car on 22 April 1960, at Tokyo’s New Grand Hotel in Harumi; the company’s 2020 annual report dates the start of sales to May 1960.
Mazda’s corporate history describes the R360 as a futuristic, ultra-lightweight car with distinctive technology and a low price for its time, and says it helped accelerate motorization in Japan. That is Mazda’s retrospective characterization, not the result of an independent comparison. Mazda’s R360 history and its 2020 annual report provide the company’s account.
Was its engine really from a motorbike?
That claim is not established by the available evidence. Mazda’s historical account identifies a Mazda 356 cc four-cycle V-twin mounted at the rear; it does not say the engine was borrowed from a motorcycle. “Motorbike engine” is therefore best treated as a catchy comparison, not a verified description of the R360’s engine origins.

How the R360’s engine and drivetrain were configured
Mazda’s historical account specifies a vertically mounted, rear-positioned, forced-air-cooled V-twin with a displacement of 356 cc. It gives output as 16 PS at 5,300 rpm and torque as 2.2 kg·m at 4,000 rpm. The same account notes magnesium-alloy and aluminum-alloy components and dry-sump lubrication. These are Mazda’s published specifications; the source does not provide a separate test measurement.
The R360 used rear-wheel drive. Buyers could choose a four-speed manual gearbox or a two-speed auxiliary automatic marketed as Torque Drive. Mazda also describes independent suspension with trailing arms and torsion-rubber springs. Together, these details show that the car’s small engine was part of a purpose-designed passenger-car package, rather than proof of a motorcycle powertrain.

A compact 2+2 built for its time
The R360’s body was a compact 2+2 coupé: a small car with two front seats and a limited rear seating area. Its rear-engine layout and lightweight construction suited the car’s small-displacement format. Mazda’s annual report places the R360 at the beginning of the company’s four-wheel passenger-car history and credits it with helping spur Japanese motorization, but the cited material does not provide comparative test data or a verified production total.

What the evidence does—and does not—confirm
Mazda’s records support the R360’s identity as a 1960 rear-engined, rear-wheel-drive coupé with a 356 cc V-twin. They do not establish a motorcycle origin for that engine. A secondary article reports 23,417 first-year sales, but that figure is not confirmed here by Mazda’s cited materials, so it should not be treated as an official company statistic.
