As of August 9, 2026, Chevrolet’s U.S. truck lineup includes the Colorado, Silverado, Silverado HD, and Silverado EV—but not the Montana.
The main reason is not that the Montana is forbidden in America. GM developed the current truck for South American markets, and the company has not chosen to spend the money required to certify, position, distribute, and support a U.S.-market version. Import costs, including the 25% tariff that can apply to imported pickup trucks, would make that decision even harder to justify.
The Montana was developed for South America, not the United States
The current Chevrolet Montana is a Brazil-developed compact pickup. GM produces it in Brazil and exports it to markets including Argentina and Uruguay. Chevrolet Brazil continues to sell it as a 2026 model.
That regional focus matters. The Montana was not designed as a global truck that GM later decided not to bring to America. It was developed to fit the needs, pricing, roads, and competitive landscape of South American markets. The truck’s size and positioning make sense below Chevrolet’s traditional U.S. pickup offerings, but GM has not announced a U.S. version, U.S. production plan, or U.S. certification program for it.

In practical terms, the decision appears to be product planning and business economics: GM has not determined that adapting the Montana for the United States would generate a sufficient return.
It could not simply be shipped from Brazil to U.S. dealers
A Brazilian-market Montana cannot be sold new in the United States merely because it carries a Chevrolet badge. A vehicle introduced into the U.S. market must comply with applicable Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards and carry the manufacturer’s certification label.
For a non-U.S.-certified vehicle less than 25 years old, the normal process can involve an NHTSA import-eligibility determination and modification by a registered importer. That is a compliance and engineering project, not a paperwork shortcut. GM would need to validate the vehicle’s equipment and performance against U.S. requirements and take responsibility for certifying the finished product.
Emissions compliance is a separate issue. The EPA requires a Certificate of Conformity for each class of motor vehicle introduced into U.S. commerce, and that certificate applies to a specific model year. The Montana would therefore need U.S. emissions certification rather than relying on its Brazilian-market approval.

| Ownership support | Parts supply, warranty procedures, technician training, and dealer service capability |
| Commercial launch | Pricing, marketing, inventory, distribution, and a clear place within Chevrolet’s lineup |
None of this means the Montana is unsafe or impossible to adapt. It means GM would have to fund and complete the adaptation before it could sell the truck as a normal new vehicle in America.
The Chicken Tax makes a Brazil-built Montana less attractive
The tariff commonly called the Chicken Tax is an important part of the calculation. Imported pickup trucks classified under the relevant U.S. tariff provisions can face a 25% duty. A 25% charge applied to the value of an imported truck would directly damage the Montana’s strongest selling point: relatively affordable pickup utility.

For example, if a hypothetical imported truck had a customs value of $20,000, a 25% duty would represent $5,000 before transportation, compliance work, distribution, dealer costs, warranty expenses, and taxes. The final retail price would not rise by exactly that amount in every case, but the example shows why the tariff can quickly erase a low-cost vehicle’s advantage.
Still, the Chicken Tax is not the complete answer. It does not ban Chevrolet from selling the Montana in America. GM could theoretically:

- Build a U.S.-market version in North America.
- Produce it in a country with more favorable trade treatment.
- Structure the vehicle and manufacturing process around different tariff classifications, subject to customs rules.
- Accept the tariff if the expected sales and margins justified it.
Those options would require additional investment. The accurate conclusion is that the tariff makes a direct Brazil-to-U.S. import unattractive; it does not make a U.S. Montana impossible.
Chevrolet already has a different U.S. pickup strategy
Chevrolet’s American truck range is built around larger and generally more expensive products. On Chevrolet’s current U.S. site, the 2026 Colorado starts at $32,400, while the Silverado starts at $36,900.
The Montana occupies a smaller, more urban-oriented category beneath the Colorado. Introducing it would give Chevrolet an entry-level pickup, but it would also force GM to decide what that truck should be:
- As a low-priced compact pickup, it could challenge products such as the Ford Maverick while carrying the costs of U.S. certification and a nationwide dealer network.
- As a better-equipped, more heavily modified truck, it could be easier to position in the U.S. market—but much of its original cost advantage could disappear.
- As a larger or more powerful model, it could overlap with the Colorado and dilute the purpose of both vehicles.
This is an inference from Chevrolet’s current lineup and the Montana’s regional positioning, not a published GM financial explanation. GM has not publicly stated that one specific factor—such as the tariff, certification expense, or Colorado overlap—is the sole reason the Montana is absent from the U.S.

What the common explanations get wrong
“The Montana is illegal in America.”
That is too broad. A Brazilian-market Montana is not automatically legal for ordinary new-vehicle sale in the United States, but non-U.S.-certified vehicles can sometimes enter through NHTSA and EPA procedures. Vehicles at least 25 years old also receive an exemption from most of the normal federal safety-certification restriction, although emissions and other requirements can still apply.
The 25-year rule is not a practical solution for the current Montana. It applies to an old vehicle, not a new 2026 truck that GM wants to sell through Chevrolet dealers.
“The Chicken Tax is the only reason.”
The 25% light-truck duty is real, but there is no public GM statement proving that it alone kept the Montana out of the United States. Certification, engineering, distribution, warranty support, marketing, and product overlap would all affect the business case.
“It only needs a steering-wheel change and U.S. headlights.”
That substantially understates the work involved. U.S. entry requires compliance with applicable safety standards and EPA emissions certification. It can also require changes and validation involving crash performance, restraint systems, lighting, labels, instrumentation, diagnostics, software, and other vehicle systems.
“Chevrolet forgot about the Montana.”
Chevrolet has not abandoned the model. The Montana remains an active product in Brazil, where Chevrolet lists a 2026 model, and GM says production and exports continue. Its absence from the U.S. lineup reflects regional product strategy, not a forgotten nameplate.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Could Chevrolet bring it to America later?
Yes, but doing so would likely require more than an import decision. GM could develop a North American version, change the production location, or redesign the vehicle around U.S. safety and emissions requirements from the beginning. That would reduce the direct-import problem but increase the investment required.

For GM to proceed, it would need to see enough demand and profit potential to justify those costs while avoiding excessive overlap with the Colorado and competing effectively against compact pickups. No such U.S. program has been announced.
FAQ
Why isn’t the Chevy Montana sold in the United States?
The current Montana was developed and produced for South American markets. GM has not announced a U.S. version or certification program, and the cost of adapting, importing, distributing, and supporting it has apparently not justified a U.S. launch.
Does the Chicken Tax prevent Chevrolet from selling the Montana in America?
No. A 25% tariff can make a Brazil-built pickup much more expensive, but it does not legally prohibit Chevrolet from selling the truck. GM could theoretically build a U.S.-market version or produce it in a different location.
Is the Chevy Montana unsafe or illegal in the U.S.?
The Montana is not automatically approved for normal new-vehicle sale in the United States, but that is different from saying it is inherently unsafe or permanently illegal. It would need to meet U.S. safety and emissions requirements before GM could sell it as a new vehicle.
Can I legally import a new Brazilian Chevy Montana?
A non-U.S.-certified vehicle under 25 years old generally requires an NHTSA import-eligibility determination and modification by a registered importer, along with EPA emissions compliance. That process can be expensive and does not provide the same straightforward ownership path as buying a U.S.-certified truck from a Chevrolet dealer.
The Bottom Line
The Chevy Montana is missing from America because GM has not chosen to fund a U.S.-market version—not because one simple law makes the truck impossible to sell. A direct import from Brazil would face U.S. safety and EPA certification requirements, dealer and warranty obligations, and potentially a 25% pickup-truck tariff. Those costs would weaken the Montana’s affordable, compact-pickup proposition, while Chevrolet already sells the larger Colorado and Silverado. The Chicken Tax is part of the explanation, but GM’s broader product and business strategy is the real reason.
