The Real-Life Inspiration Behind Maserati’s Famous Logo

Maserati’s famous trident logo comes from Neptune’s weapon at Bologna’s Fountain of Neptune. Here is how Mario Maserati turned that local landmark into a racing emblem in 1926—and how the badge evolved afterward.

Maserati’s logo is inspired by the trident held by Neptune in Bologna’s Fountain of Neptune. The fountain stood near the city where the Maserati brothers founded their first workshop, and Mario Maserati transformed its most recognizable detail into a badge that first appeared on a racing car in 1926.

The trident comes from Bologna—not from a generic pitchfork design

Maserati’s famous emblem is based on the three-pronged trident held by Neptune in Bologna’s Fountain of Neptune. The monument stands beside Piazza Maggiore in Bologna, the Italian city where the Maserati brothers established their first workshop.

The logo therefore combines a specific place, a specific sculpture and a specific moment in the company’s development. Its trident references Neptune’s strength and command of the sea, while its Bologna connection ties the symbol to Maserati’s home city. It first became a racing emblem in 1926, before it became the familiar badge associated with Maserati road cars.

There is one important limitation to the story: Maserati did not copy the entire statue, and the badge does not depict Neptune. The supported claim is narrower and more interesting—the emblem was inspired by the weapon in Neptune’s hand.

The real-life source: Bologna’s Fountain of Neptune

Bologna’s Fountain of Neptune is a Renaissance monument created through a collaboration between architect Tommaso Laureti and sculptor Giambologna, also known as Jean de Boulogne. The fountain formed part of a major redesign of the city center commissioned under Pope Pius IV and carried out under the supervision of papal vice-legate Pier Donato Cesi.

The work took shape during the 1560s. The fountain’s inscriptions include the date 1564, although the sculpture and the surrounding construction extended across several years. At the top stands Neptune, the Roman god of the sea, holding the unmistakable three-pronged weapon that Mario Maserati later translated into a company symbol.

The Comune di Bologna’s history of the Fountain of Neptune documents the monument’s Renaissance origins and its place in the city center. That setting matters: Maserati’s emblem was not chosen in isolation from the company’s surroundings. It was drawn from one of Bologna’s most recognizable landmarks.

Why Maserati chose a trident

Maserati’s own explanation gives the trident several connected meanings. As Neptune’s weapon, it suggests strength, vigor and authority. Neptune’s control over the sea also provides the imagery of a powerful figure who can either calm or stir the waters.

For a young racing-car manufacturer, those associations were useful. The trident looked distinctive on a radiator badge, carried a sense of command and connected the company to the city where it began. The result was more specific than simply using a mythological god or an abstract symbol of speed.

Maserati also connects Neptune with the epithet “Tamer of Horses,” interpreting that association through the company’s racing cars and horsepower. That is a later brand interpretation, not evidence that the emblem was originally designed as an automotive horse symbol. The primary visual source remains the trident at the Bologna fountain.

Mario Maserati created the first design

The brother credited with turning the fountain’s trident into a logo was Mario Maserati. Unlike Alfieri, Ettore and Ernesto, Mario was the artistic member of the family rather than one of the brothers directly responsible for the company’s mechanical work.

According to Maserati’s more recent historical account, the logo began taking shape in 1925. Mario’s first drawing survives in the Maserati archives in Modena. The emblem then made its official public appearance in 1926.

Some older secondary accounts place the idea as early as 1920 and attribute the suggestion to family friend Marquis Diego de Sterlich. That version appears in enthusiast and reference material, but it should be treated as an older or secondary account rather than as settled fact. The most defensible timeline is that Mario’s surviving first drawing dates to 1925 and that the emblem became public in 1926.

The trident first appeared on a racing car

The badge was not introduced as a styling detail on a luxury sedan. It first appeared publicly on the Maserati Tipo 26 at the Targa Florio on April 25, 1926.

Alfieri Maserati drove the Tipo 26 to victory in the 1,500-cc class and eighth place overall. The first badge was rectangular, with a dark trident set against a light background. That debut connected the symbol immediately with Maserati’s identity as a racing-car constructor and competitor.

This is why the logo’s history is more than a story about a mythological reference. A centuries-old Bologna monument supplied the image, but a working competition car gave it its first public meaning. The trident appeared at the moment Maserati was establishing itself on the race track.

Readers who want to follow that story into Maserati’s wider racing and model history may find a Maserati history book a useful next step. The catalog includes illustrated Maserati titles, although individual Amazon US availability and pricing should be checked before publication or purchase.

How the Maserati badge changed over time

The original rectangular badge did not remain unchanged. In the early 1930s, Maserati moved toward an oval design. One practical reason was that newer cars had curved radiator shapes that suited an oval badge better than a rectangle.

The oval also introduced Bologna’s red and blue colors, adding another direct reference to the company’s home city. Maserati gives a second possible explanation for the shape: the oval may also recall the elliptical cross-section of chassis tubes used in its Grand Prix cars. That chassis-tube explanation is an alternate version, not a conclusively established reason for the redesign.

A gold-background version appeared in 1980, followed by another redesign in 1997. Details such as the surrounding shape, colors and finish changed, but the central trident remained the constant identifying element.

Period What happened Why it matters
1925 Mario Maserati created the first surviving trident drawing. The logo’s documented design phase begins.
April 25, 1926 The trident appeared publicly on the Tipo 26 at the Targa Florio. The emblem entered the company’s history as a racing badge.
Early 1930s The badge moved from a rectangular format toward an oval. The shape better suited curved radiator designs and incorporated Bologna’s colors.
1980 A gold-background version appeared. The badge received another significant visual treatment while retaining the trident.
1997 Maserati introduced a redesigned version. The emblem was modernized without abandoning its central symbol.

What the logo does—and does not—represent

  • It does represent: the trident held by Neptune at Bologna’s Fountain of Neptune.
  • It also represents: Maserati’s Bologna origins, along with ideas of power, authority and racing ambition.
  • It does not represent: a literal portrait of Neptune or a full copy of the fountain sculpture.
  • It was not originally: a generic pitchfork, a standalone horse emblem or a symbol proven to have been designed solely around horsepower.

The horse interpretation helps explain how Maserati later connected the mythological figure to engines and racing, but it should not replace the documented origin. The image came from Neptune’s trident; the automotive meaning developed around it.

Can you see the inspiration in person?

Yes. The Fountain of Neptune stands in central Bologna beside Piazza Maggiore. The municipality’s official site provides information about the monument and documents guided visits and booking details. Travelers can use the official Fountain of Neptune visitor information to check current access arrangements before planning a visit.

Seeing the statue makes the logo’s design choice easier to understand: the recognizable feature is not the figure’s entire silhouette but the clean, powerful shape of the trident held above him.

The lasting strength of Maserati’s emblem

Maserati’s logo has changed in format, color and finish, but its essential idea has remained stable for a century. Mario Maserati took a landmark from the company’s home city and reduced it to a simple graphic mark that could work on a racing car.

That combination explains the emblem’s durability. The trident is visually distinctive, historically tied to Bologna and symbolically suited to a performance manufacturer. Its journey from a Renaissance fountain to the nose of the Tipo 26—and later to Maserati’s road cars—gave the symbol both local identity and racing credibility.
