The real difference is displacement: the Toyota 1JZ is a 2,491 cm³ (2.5-liter) inline-six, while the 2JZ is a 2,997 cm³ (3.0-liter) inline-six. Both use Toyota’s DOHC JZ architecture and an 86.0 mm bore, but the 2JZ’s stroke is 14.5 mm longer. That extra displacement generally gives the 2JZ more torque and power potential, although the best choice for a project depends on the exact suffix, chassis, budget and intended use.
1JZ vs 2JZ: the dimensions that matter
The 2JZ is not a completely different engine concept. It is a larger-displacement development of the same JZ-family inline-six layout. The SAE paper Development of Toyota JZ Type Engine Series describes the engines as “stroke up versions of the 1JZ engines.”

| Specification | 1JZ | 2JZ |
|---|---|---|
| Displacement | 2,491 cm³ (2.5 L) | 2,997 cm³ (3.0 L) |
| Bore | 86.0 mm | 86.0 mm |
| Stroke | 71.5 mm | 86.0 mm |
| Basic architecture | Inline-six, DOHC JZ family | Inline-six, DOHC JZ family |
| Typical factory role | 2.5-liter performance and luxury models | 3.0-liter flagship applications, including the JZA80 Supra |
Because the bore is shared, the extra 506 cm³ comes primarily from the 2JZ’s longer stroke. That changes the engine’s displacement, torque leverage and piston-speed characteristics without abandoning the family’s basic layout.

Factory output is variant-specific
“1JZ” and “2JZ” are family and displacement identifiers, not complete specifications. Toyota’s historical specification pages explicitly describe their figures as representative model grades, so ratings should not be applied universally to every year, market or suffix.

| Example application | Engine | Published rating |
|---|---|---|
| 1992 Toyota Cresta | 1JZ-GE | 180 PS at 6,000 rpm |
| 1992 Toyota Cresta | 2JZ-GE | 220 PS at 5,800 rpm |
| JZA80 Toyota Supra | 2JZ-GTE | 280 PS at 5,600 rpm |
A separate Toyota 2JZ-GE specification document lists 10.0:1 compression, 220 hp at 5,800 rpm and 285 N·m at 4,800 rpm for its specified version. The document’s horsepower label and the Cresta table’s PS label should not be treated as proof that every 2JZ-GE has identical output.
What GE, GTE and VVT-i tell you
GE: naturally aspirated specification
GE identifies naturally aspirated versions in the cited Toyota applications. A GE engine’s intake, exhaust, compression, sensors and calibration differ from those of a turbocharged GTE, even when the family name is similar.

GTE: turbocharged performance specification
GTE identifies turbocharged performance versions. The JZA80 Supra used the 2JZ-GTE, while Toyota records also document 1JZ-GTE engines in JZX90 Mark II applications and 2JZ-GTE engines in the Aristo lineage.
VVT-i and later revisions
Variable valve timing, compression, emissions equipment, transmission, wiring and ECU calibration vary by year and market. A listing that says only “1JZ” or “2JZ” is not detailed enough for parts ordering or a swap plan.

Where Toyota used each engine
Toyota fitted JZ engines to more than one type of vehicle. Historical records show 1JZ-GE and 2JZ-GE options in the Cresta, the 1JZ-GTE in the JZX90 Mark II, and both 2JZ-GE and 2JZ-GTE in the JZA80 Supra and Aristo family.
The same engine family does not mean the same installation. Chassis-specific differences can include:

How the displacement difference affects a build
Power and torque target
The 2JZ begins with half a liter more displacement. At a comparable state of tune, that gives it a useful advantage in torque and can reduce the boost or engine speed required to reach a given output. It does not guarantee a faster car: turbo sizing, cams, exhaust flow, fuel system and calibration remain decisive.

The 1JZ’s 71.5 mm stroke is shorter than the 2JZ’s 86.0 mm stroke. That changes piston speed and the engine’s mechanical operating characteristics, and it can suit a responsive, high-revving build. It is not a guarantee of better throttle response or higher safe rpm, because the complete combination determines those results.

Packaging and compatibility
Choose the engine that matches the chassis and supporting hardware you can actually source. A 2JZ that requires extensive mount, sump, wiring and transmission changes may be a worse project choice than a correctly matched 1JZ.
Cost and parts supply
Purchase price, rebuild condition, turbo hardware, sensors and local parts availability can outweigh the family-level displacement difference. Compare complete, verified engines rather than assuming that a bare long block includes the electronics and accessories needed for installation.

- Read the complete engine code. Record 1JZ-GE, 1JZ-GTE, 2JZ-GE or 2JZ-GTE, including any VVT-i designation.
- Confirm the chassis code. JZA80, JZX90, Aristo and Cresta installations can use different mounts, sumps, harnesses and control systems.
- Verify production year and market. Emissions equipment, sensors, ECU strategy and transmission options can change between regions and model years.
- Inventory the supplied hardware. Check whether the engine includes turbochargers, intake and exhaust manifolds, alternator, sensors, harness and ECU.
- Use the correct documentation. A Toyota 2JZ service manual, Toyota JZ engine repair manual or Supra 2JZ workshop manual is useful only when its engine code and market match the engine being serviced.
- Plan the complete drivetrain. Confirm transmission, clutch, driveshaft, differential, cooling, fuel system and ECU integration before committing to the swap.
Which one should you choose?
| Priority | More likely fit | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| More starting displacement and torque potential | 2JZ | 3.0 liters and an 86.0 mm stroke provide the larger baseline. |
| 2.5-liter package or an existing JZX drivetrain | 1JZ | The engine may reduce conversion work when the chassis was designed around it. |
| High-output halo application | 2JZ-GTE | The JZA80 Supra’s factory flagship specification is a well-known example, but the complete vehicle package still matters. |
| Lowest total project cost | Either | Condition, included hardware and local parts supply matter more than the badge alone. |
There is no universal winner. Select the 2JZ when its extra displacement and torque potential justify the cost and installation work; select the 1JZ when its 2.5-liter format, shorter stroke, availability or existing drivetrain makes the complete project more coherent.
