The driver sees behind the car on that display, not through rear glass.
Why does the Polestar 4 have no rear window?
Polestar says removing the rear window allowed the rear roof header to extend farther back and made room for a long, single-piece glass roof. The company also describes the design as a way to create a more enclosed, lounge-like space around the rear seats. Those are the automaker’s stated design aims, not independently measured benefits.
In Polestar’s design article, the company explains: “As for rear visibility, a wide-angle, high-definition camera mounted on the roof displays a feed on an HD screen that replaces the traditional rear-view mirror.” Polestar’s design article dates to the car’s 2023 reveal period; it describes the concept, not current market pricing, equipment or availability.
How do you see behind a car with no rear window?
The roof-mounted camera captures a rearward view, and the interior screen displays that feed where a conventional rear-view mirror would normally be. The Polestar 4’s center rearward view therefore comes from a camera-and-screen system rather than a view through the cabin.

A Cars.com road-test editor characterized the camera mirror as the Polestar 4’s only rearward view and assessed its resolution and low-light performance positively during that review. That is one reviewer’s evaluation; individual comfort with a screen-based mirror can vary.
What should drivers know about a camera rear-view mirror?
A camera system depends on its camera having a usable view. Chevrolet’s general guidance for camera mirrors notes that rain, snow or dirt can obstruct a rear-facing camera, and that a camera mirror does not show blind spots. This is general camera-mirror context, not a Polestar 4-specific operating instruction; drivers should consult the vehicle’s own manual for its controls and care guidance. Chevrolet’s camera-mirror guidance also emphasizes that drivers remain responsible for checking their surroundings.

Is the camera mirror right for you?
Try the system from the driver’s seat before deciding. During a test drive, check whether you find the screen comfortable to use as your center rear view, how clearly you can read it in the lighting and weather you commonly encounter, and whether the rear-cabin layout suits your passengers. These are personal-fit questions, not performance results established for every driver or condition.
