It is the longest-range electric option among the under-$50,000 plug-in hybrid SUVs covered here. The Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV is a strong alternative, with up to 45 electric miles and a manufacturer-estimated 420 miles of combined range. Neither vehicle makes range anxiety obsolete for every driver: electric range is finite, and the price you pay depends on trim, options, fees and location.
Which plug-in hybrid SUV under $50,000 has the longest electric range?
Among the models with current US-market figures available here, the 2026 Toyota RAV4 Plug-in Hybrid SE leads on listed electric range: Toyota gives it a 54-mile EPA-estimated range and a $41,500 base MSRP. The 2026 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV starts at $43,245 and is rated for up to 45 miles of electric range. These are starting prices, not guaranteed out-the-door totals; destination charges, options, taxes, dealer fees and incentives can change the final cost.

Toyota’s $41,500 price and 54-mile EPA estimate apply specifically to the SE trim. Its other 2026 trims are listed at $45,300 for Woodland, $47,200 for XSE and $48,500 for GR Sport, before options and additional fees. Toyota lists different efficiency figures by trim: Woodland 37 mpg/94 MPGe, XSE 40 mpg/96 MPGe and GR Sport 36 mpg/86 MPGe. Do not assume the SE’s range or efficiency applies to the entire lineup. What happens when the battery is depleted?
A plug-in hybrid does not stop when its usable electric charge is exhausted. It switches to operating as a hybrid using gasoline, so the driver can continue traveling and refuel at a gas station. The distance after the electric portion depends on gasoline consumption and the fuel remaining; it is not the same as the vehicle’s electric-only range.
For the Outlander PHEV, Mitsubishi lists 27 mpg in gasoline-only operation and a 420-mile total estimated range combining electricity and gasoline. Those manufacturer figures should not be treated as guarantees for every trip. For the RAV4, Toyota publishes trim-specific mpg and MPGe figures, but the cited model-page figures do not establish a comparable total-range figure. Avoid treating an electric-range estimate as the vehicle’s total journey limit.

Does a plug-in hybrid eliminate range anxiety?
Not completely. A PHEV can reduce dependence on public charging for longer journeys because gasoline remains available after electric driving, but it still has a finite electric range and requires fuel. Whether that addresses a driver’s concern depends on the trip, access to gas stations and charging, and comfort with the vehicle’s range estimates.
Published range is an estimate, not a promise. Weather, speed, terrain, passenger and cargo load, driving style, charging habits and trim can affect results. An Associated Press article published September 2, 2026, reported that an Edmunds-tested RAV4 GR Sport traveled 58 miles before its battery ran out. Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV: more published combined range
The Outlander PHEV is worth a look if its 420-mile combined estimate and published charging-time figures fit your priorities. Mitsubishi lists a 22.7-kWh lithium-ion drive battery, approximately 16.5 hours to charge on 120V/12A, and approximately 6.5 hours on a 240V/15A EVSE. Hyundai Tucson Plug-in Hybrid: a comfort and space consideration
In the AP article’s Edmunds comparison, the Tucson had 41.3 inches of rear legroom versus 37.8 inches in the RAV4, while the RAV4 had 33.6 cubic feet of cargo capacity behind the rear seats versus 31.9 in the Tucson. The article characterized the Tucson as more comfortable and the RAV4 as stronger on range and fuel economy in that comparison. How much does it cost to charge at home?
There is no single reliable cost for charging either vehicle at home. The amount depends on your electricity rate, how much energy you use, charging losses and how often you plug in. To estimate your own cost, use your utility’s per-kilowatt-hour rate and the energy needed for the charging session; a local bill or utility rate schedule is more useful than a national average for this decision.
Do you need a Level 2 charger?
No. The Outlander PHEV specifications list an approximate 16.5-hour charge on 120V/12A as well as an approximate 6.5-hour charge on 240V/15A EVSE, so a 240-volt setup can shorten charging time. Whether Level 2 is worthwhile depends on your daily mileage, parking and charging window. Confirm the vehicle’s connector and charging limits, what equipment is included, and whether your home’s electrical setup can support the installation before buying equipment. The available specifications do not establish one universally suitable charger.

- Your daily driving: Compare your routine distance with the electric range for the exact trim, while leaving room for conditions that reduce range.
- Charging access: If you cannot charge routinely at home or work, the electric-range advantage may be less useful.
- Long-trip operation: Separate electric range from gasoline-only efficiency and combined range; they answer different questions.
- Fit and utility: Check seating, cargo space and comfort in person, especially if your household regularly carries rear passengers or bulky loads.
