Yes. Nissan has confirmed that the Xterra will return to its U.S. lineup, with a launch targeted for late 2028. A starting price below $40,000 has been reported as a goal from Nissan Americas chairman Christian Meunier—not announced as a final MSRP—so buyers do not yet know the exact price or whether it would include destination charges.
What Nissan has confirmed about the new Xterra
Nissan’s future-vehicle page and April 16, 2026 newsroom announcement confirm the Xterra’s return to the U.S. lineup. The company is targeting a late-2028 launch; that is a planned timeframe, not a guaranteed date when customers will be able to buy one.
Nissan says the SUV will be built in the United States on a body-on-frame platform and offered with V6 or V6-hybrid power. It also places the Xterra in a family of five U.S.-produced body-on-frame vehicles. Nissan’s global product strategy identifies the Xterra as a U.S. “heartbeat” model.
Will the Nissan Xterra really cost under $40,000?
That is the stated target, not a published sticker price. Edmunds reports Meunier saying, “We’re gonna bring an Xterra below $40,000,” and notes that Nissan has not said how far below that threshold it might land or whether it refers to a price before destination charges. Edmunds’ report attributes the comment to Meunier in an interview.

Car and Driver’s report also attributes the below-$40,000 target to Meunier and says a Nissan spokesperson declined to corroborate the pricing comments when asked. The official announcement confirms the return and timing, but does not publish an MSRP.
So “under $40,000” should be read as an executive’s reported goal, not a promise that the base model—or a buyer’s total price—will come in below that amount. Final MSRP, destination charges and trim pricing have not been disclosed.

What is still unknown
Nissan has announced the broad product plan, not a full specification sheet. The official material does not give power output, fuel economy, towing capacity, dimensions, seating or cargo figures, trims, or equipment details. It also does not name a model year or provide a firm on-sale date.
Meunier’s comments, as reported by Edmunds and Car and Driver, describe an ambition for an affordable, straightforward SUV. They are not a substitute for published specifications or a final equipment list. Until Nissan releases those details, there is no sound basis for ranking the new Xterra against rivals on capability, value or features.

How to assess the price when Nissan releases it
A useful comparison will need confirmed, like-for-like figures rather than a target price set against rivals’ advertised starting prices. When specifications and pricing are available, check:
- Base MSRP and whether destination is included.
- Engine and hybrid configurations, alongside body-on-frame construction.
- Off-road hardware and capability, towing capacity and fuel economy.
- Seating, cargo utility and warranty coverage.
- Dealer availability and the actual price of vehicles for sale.
Rival prices change over time, and comparisons are misleading if one figure includes destination while another does not. The Xterra’s own price and equipment are not yet settled publicly, so a detailed value comparison would be premature.

Sales ambition is not a forecast
Car and Driver reports that Meunier described a goal of selling more than 50,000 Xterras annually. That is a company target attributed to an executive, not an observed sales result or an independent demand forecast.

The announced vehicle is a future model on a new body-on-frame platform. Nissan has not identified compatible accessories, replacement parts, manuals or other products for it. Do not assume that parts from an older Xterra generation will fit the returning model; compatibility requires vehicle-specific confirmation.
