But the title’s “hated, then loved” arc needs a qualification: Nissan and contemporary reporting document polarized reactions and strong early sales, not a measured change in public opinion over time. The Nissan Cube is another plausible candidate, with its own distinctive design story.
Why the Nissan Juke looked so different
Nissan developed the Juke from a compact concept built around exaggerated, muscular forms. Its production design kept the most conspicuous cues: headlights split across different levels of the front end, an unconventional grille and sculpted bodywork. Inside, a center console designed to evoke a motorcycle carried the same offbeat theme. Nissan’s design retrospective describes the concept as polarizing and says the production car, unveiled less than a year later, also prompted reactions at both ends of the spectrum.
The styling was not an accidental side effect of the package. Nissan’s retrospective says the aim was to provoke an emotional response. Matthew Weaver, Vice President of Nissan Design Europe, put the design team’s ambition this way: “It’s our job to make them fall in love with a Nissan.” Nissan’s account also says the Sunderland plant reached maximum capacity within a year as it worked to meet demand.
Was the Juke really hated, then loved?
The available evidence supports “polarizing,” not a proven public-opinion reversal. Nissan recalls a split between people who loved the design and people who hated it; TIME also described the Juke as polarizing in 2014. Neither account establishes that broad public opinion later shifted from dislike to affection.

There is, however, evidence that the styling did not prevent buyers from choosing it. TIME reported Nissan’s figure of 420,000 Jukes sold worldwide in less than 40 months, and 135,000 sold in 2013. Those are figures reported in 2014, not current cumulative totals. Nissan spokesperson Travis Parman told TIME, “Great design often is polarizing,” adding that the Juke offered “more assertive expression—which is exactly what many buyers want.” TIME’s 2014 report attributes the sales figures and remarks to Nissan.
The Nissan Cube is another strong candidate
The Juke is not the only Nissan with a credible “weirdness” origin story. Nissan says the Cube began in 1998 as a boxy compact designed around useful interior space. Its retrospective credits the first generation with 400,000 sales, a historical figure from Nissan’s 2013 account. Nissan’s Cube retrospective describes the second generation, introduced in 2002, as adding an asymmetric rear design that initially met resistance inside the company.

That asymmetry became one of the Cube’s signatures. Nissan says survey respondents often did not notice the rear-window difference until it was pointed out, and describes the model as becoming a hit. The same account says that generation was sold only in Japan, while overseas fans reportedly imported it. These are Nissan’s own historical recollections, rather than independent market research. The retrospective also quotes designer Hirotada Kuwabara saying, in an English rendering of his Japanese interview, “I wanted to make something that didn’t look like any other car.”

The Juke more directly matches a story about public love-or-hate reactions. The Cube better illustrates a design idea that met resistance inside Nissan before becoming an identifying feature. The evidence does not establish that either model was universally hated or that public feeling later changed across the board.

Can you still buy either one new in the United States?
Nissan USA’s discontinued-vehicles page lists both the Cube and Juke among discontinued models, so neither is presented there as a current new U.S. model. The page characterizes the Cube as unconventional, noting its bulldog-with-shades-inspired grille and wraparound windows; it describes the Juke as sporty and notes that it offered customizable accessories. Nissan USA’s discontinued-vehicles page is the relevant source for current U.S. lineup status. The page supports the accessory category, but not the fit of any particular item; buyers should confirm year and trim compatibility before purchasing.
