The next Mazda MX-5 Miata could be the best ever if Mazda preserves the car’s low mass, manual-transmission involvement, rear-drive balance, and open-air simplicity while adding the refinement and emissions flexibility modern rules demand. Mazda has not yet confirmed the successor’s final engine, power, weight, price, or launch date, so the verdict remains conditional.
As of August 13, 2026, the evidence points to an evolutionary successor rather than a clean-sheet departure: the current 2026 MX-5 remains a naturally aspirated, manually available fourth-generation roadster, while credible reporting describes the next car as small and light but leaves its final powertrain unresolved.

Key takeaways
- According to Mazda North American Operations in 2026, every U.S.-market MX-5 uses a naturally aspirated 2.0-liter four-cylinder producing 181 horsepower and 151 lb-ft of torque, with a six-speed manual still available; the official 2026 MX-5 announcement confirms the current formula.
- The U.S. 2026 Mazda MX-5 Miata Sport starts at $30,430 with the six-speed manual, but Mazda has not announced a successor price.
- Credible secondary reporting points toward a next-generation Miata that remains small, light, naturally aspirated, and manually shifted, although those are reported intentions rather than a complete official specification sheet.
- A July 2026 secondary report attributed a 1,000-to-1,200-kilogram target to Mazda CEO Masahiro Moro; the range is not a confirmed production curb weight.
- Mazda has not confirmed whether the successor will launch as a combustion car, hybrid, battery EV, or with multiple powertrains, and no official launch date, output, range, or final dimensions are available.
What does the current 2026 MX-5 Miata tell us about the next Mazda MX-5 Miata?
The current 2026 MX-5 Miata shows that Mazda is still protecting the fourth-generation car’s central idea instead of chasing headline performance. Mazda describes the 2026 model as a continuation of the fourth-generation roadster with targeted interior refinements, while the mechanical package remains a two-seat, rear-wheel-drive convertible or retractable-fastback sports car focused on driver involvement.

Why is the MX-5’s Jinba Ittai philosophy more important than horsepower?
The MX-5’s most important benchmark is the quality of the driver-car connection, not the size of the engine’s output. Mazda’s official history uses Jinba Ittai—roughly, the unity of rider and horse—to describe the relationship that should link every MX-5 generation to the original lightweight sports-car idea.
Jinba Ittai continues to symbolize each new generation of MX-5 and ensures that it will always remain true to Mazda’s original dream of a lightweight sports car.

Mazda’s official MX-5 history presents that statement as a continuing design principle rather than a claim that each generation must be faster or more complex. The official MX-5 history from Mazda Motor Corporation is therefore a better guide to the successor’s likely priorities than a simple horsepower comparison.
A well-judged lightweight roadster makes modest speeds engaging because steering response, braking, body movement, throttle precision, gear selection, and rear-drive balance remain easy to feel. A more powerful replacement could be objectively quicker yet less satisfying if additional mass dulls those responses or if software and automatic systems take too much of the driver’s role.
What is actually known about the next-generation MX-5?
The successor’s broad engineering direction is more credible than any rumored specification. A 2025 Car and Driver report based on interviews and comments from Mazda leadership said the next Miata was intended to remain small and light, use a naturally aspirated engine, and retain a stick-shift transmission. That report said Mazda had no plan for an electric Miata at the time of those interviews, not that an electric version had been ruled out permanently.
A February 2026 Car and Driver report, citing interviews with two Mazda European executives originally published by AutoRAI, said the next Miata was still at least several years away and that Mazda had not finalized its powertrain. The report described synthetic fuel as an attractive way to retain internal combustion, while hybridization was discussed as a possible response to emissions rules and limited synthetic-fuel infrastructure. Read the 2025 report on Mazda’s small, light, manually shifted Miata direction and the February 2026 report on synthetic fuels and hybrid possibilities as informed reporting, not official specifications.

A July 31, 2026 secondary report attributed the following statement to Mazda CEO Masahiro Moro: The successor must also be ready for a scenario without a combustion engine.
The statement was reported by AutoNext as coming from an interview, but the primary interview was not independently retrieved in this research pass. The careful interpretation is that Mazda may be developing an architecture flexible enough to handle a future without combustion engines; the statement does not establish that the launch car will be electric, hybrid, or offered with multiple powertrains.
The same July 2026 report attributed a 1,000-to-1,200-kilogram engineering target to Moro. The AutoNext report on the next MX-5 weight target is secondary reporting, so the range should be treated as a design target rather than a confirmed production specification.
Will the next Miata be electric, hybrid, or naturally aspirated?
No final powertrain has been confirmed. The available evidence supports several possible paths, with Mazda apparently trying to preserve the MX-5’s character while keeping the car viable under changing emissions rules and in markets with different charging and fuel infrastructure.
Mazda’s official strategy is explicitly multi-solution rather than one-size-fits-all. The company’s 2025 corporate briefing places Skyactiv-Z development within a wider electrification transition, describes 2025–2027 as a transition phase, and identifies 2028–2030 as a period for fuller battery-electric introduction. The briefing also identifies a future hybrid application in the CX-5, but it does not confirm Skyactiv-Z or that hybrid system for the next MX-5. Mazda’s 2025 Multi-Solution Briefing should not be read as a Miata specification sheet.

| Path | Why it could protect the Miata formula | Main risk | Evidence status |
|---|---|---|---|
| More efficient naturally aspirated combustion engine | Preserves linear throttle response, engine sound, rev-based involvement, and the reported manual-transmission direction. | Emissions compliance may vary by market and could require additional hardware. | Naturally aspirated intent was reported in 2025; engine identity and output remain unconfirmed. |
| Synthetic-fuel-compatible combustion powertrain | Could retain internal-combustion character without requiring the car to become a battery EV. | Synthetic-fuel supply and infrastructure are not equally available in every market. | Described as an ideal solution by Mazda European executives in February 2026 reporting; not confirmed for production. |
| Compact hybrid assistance | Could help emissions performance and low-speed response while retaining a combustion engine. | Motor, battery, cooling, and control hardware can add mass and distance to the driving experience. | Discussed as a possible emissions response in February 2026 reporting; no MX-5 system has been announced. |
| Architecture prepared for a battery-electric scenario | Could give Mazda a way to keep the nameplate viable if combustion becomes unavailable in a market. | A large battery could conflict with the low-mass, low-inertia character that defines the roadster. | Flexible future readiness was reported in July 2026; launch powertrain, battery capacity, and range are unknown. |
Will the next MX-5 use the Skyactiv-Z engine?
Mazda has not confirmed that the next MX-5 will use Skyactiv-Z. Mazda’s official corporate material discusses Skyactiv-Z as part of broader powertrain and electrification development, but the reviewed material does not name the successor’s engine, confirm its displacement, or connect Skyactiv-Z to a production Miata.
The responsible prediction is that Mazda could use technology developed under the Skyactiv-Z program if that technology helps the MX-5 meet emissions requirements without sacrificing response and weight targets. Calling Skyactiv-Z the next Miata’s confirmed engine would go beyond the evidence.
Why could a strict weight target make the next Miata the best ever?
The reported 1,000-to-1,200-kilogram target matters because a Miata’s pleasure comes from low inertia and readable behavior more than from acceleration figures. A light car places less demand on its tires, brakes, suspension, and powertrain, and a driver can feel the consequences of steering, braking, throttle, and gear changes more directly.

The target also captures the successor’s central engineering challenge. Safety equipment, body rigidity, sound insulation, infotainment, emissions hardware, climate systems, and any electrification components all tend to compete for mass. If Mazda adds those improvements while keeping the finished car close to the reported range, the next MX-5 could feel more refined and capable without losing delicacy. If a battery or hybrid system pushes the car far beyond that intent, the successor could become a technically impressive two-seat convertible that no longer feels like a Miata.
The best-ever argument therefore does not require a dramatic power increase. It requires Mazda to spend engineering effort on mass distribution, steering calibration, brake feel, body control, ride quality, and tire loading before spending it on benchmark acceleration.
Will the next MX-5 still have a manual transmission?
The next MX-5 is reported to be intended for a manual transmission, but manual availability is not officially guaranteed. The 2025 leadership reporting specifically pointed toward a stick shift, and the 2026 MX-5 proves that Mazda still regards a six-speed manual as central rather than optional decoration.
The distinction matters because a future hybrid or battery-electric MX-5 cannot automatically be assumed to have a conventional manual gearbox. The reviewed sources do not confirm how a manual transmission would interact with any hybrid system, nor do they confirm that an electric version would offer one. The safest expectation is a reported manual intent for a combustion-oriented successor, not a promise covering every possible future powertrain.
How should the next MX-5 be judged against the current ND?
The next MX-5 should be judged as a complete roadster, not as a more powerful replacement. The following tests show what would make the successor better than the current fourth-generation car without changing the assignment Mazda gave it.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

|---|---|---|
| Curb weight and inertia | Add safety, structure, emissions equipment, and convenience without abandoning the reported low-mass target. | Use electrification or luxury equipment to become heavy enough that steering, braking, and direction changes feel less immediate. |
| Powertrain character | Deliver naturally aspirated response, precise throttle control, useful torque, and an engaging rev range rather than merely a larger peak-output number. | Replace linear response with a distant or over-assisted delivery that makes the engine less central to the experience. |
| Transmission involvement | Retain a manual option with the direct, deliberate interaction expected from an MX-5. | Make the automatic the only meaningful choice or provide a manual only as a marketing gesture. |
| Chassis communication | Improve steering weight, body control, ride quality, brake feel, and balance together. | Chase grip or stiffness in isolation until the roadster becomes less readable and less comfortable. |
| Open-air usability | Make roof operation, wind management, weather sealing, visibility, and seating comfort better so owners can drive top-down more often. | Deliver a more complicated roof or cabin that reduces the simple pleasure of using the convertible. |
| Daily livability | Improve safety integration, storage, climate control, infotainment usability, and refinement without allowing screens and alerts to dominate the cabin. | Turn the small sports car into a technology demonstrator that is harder to operate than the current car. |
| Regulatory durability | Use combustion efficiency, synthetic fuel, hybrid assistance, or future-ready architecture in a way that keeps the car viable across different markets. | Choose a powertrain that works in one regulatory environment but makes the global MX-5 difficult to sell or support. |
| Value | Remain attainable enough to preserve the MX-5’s role as an accessible sports car. | Allow added technology and complexity to move the car into a price class where its lightweight mission loses much of its appeal. |
Can Mazda make an electric Miata without ruining it?
Mazda could make an electric roadster without automatically ruining the MX-5, but an electric Miata would deserve the name only if Mazda solved mass, balance, packaging, and driver involvement before maximizing battery size or range. The issue is not whether electric propulsion can be quick; the issue is whether the resulting car remains light, communicative, open, and attainable.
The July 2026 report’s statement about preparing for a scenario without combustion suggests that Mazda is at least considering long-term flexibility. That is different from confirming an electric launch model. A purpose-built architecture could let Mazda explore an electric future while protecting the current car’s proportions and seating mission, but the dossier contains no verified battery capacity, electric range, production weight, or launch-powertrain information.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Should you buy a 2026 Miata or wait for the next generation?
Buy the 2026 MX-5 if you want a known, currently available roadster with a confirmed manual transmission, naturally aspirated engine, and published U.S. pricing. Wait for the next generation if you are willing to wait at least several years for an unreleased car whose powertrain, weight, price, and launch date remain unknown.
| Choose the 2026 MX-5 now if… | Wait for the next MX-5 if… |
|---|---|
| You value certainty: the 2026 U.S. car has 181 hp, a 7,500-rpm redline, a six-speed manual option, and a $30,430 starting MSRP for Sport manual. | You care more about seeing whether Mazda can add refinement and emissions flexibility while preserving the lightweight formula. |
| You want to drive a current fourth-generation car rather than follow reports about an unannounced successor. | You accept that the next car is reported to be at least several years away and that no official specification sheet is available. |
| You prefer a known naturally aspirated combustion roadster and do not need to wait for possible future technology. | You specifically want to evaluate Mazda’s eventual answer to hybridization, synthetic fuel, or an electric-ready architecture. |
| You want a price that Mazda has published for the current model year. | You understand that the successor’s U.S. price could be higher, lower, or unavailable in your market; no forecast is supported by the evidence. |
Waiting is not a guarantee of getting a lighter, cheaper, or more engaging car. Buying the current model is not an admission that the next one will be better. The decision turns on whether the known strengths of the 2026 car matter more to you than the possibility of a more complete future version.
How can current Miata owners preserve the formula while waiting?
Ownership is part of the MX-5’s appeal because a lightweight sports car becomes more valuable when it is easy to use, understand, and maintain. Readers researching an older car should choose a generation-specific MX-5 Miata workshop manual rather than assuming one repair guide covers every NA, NB, NC, and ND component. The Miata publication index is a useful starting point, but the generation and model-year coverage should be confirmed before purchase because the successor is unreleased.
For the historical side of the question, the publisher page for Antony Ingram’s revised Mazda MX-5: new edition describes coverage of the model’s conception, development, production, four generations, concepts, and special editions. The Motorbooks publisher page for Mazda MX-5: new edition makes the book relevant to understanding why continuity matters more to this nameplate than a simple power upgrade.
Current owners can also evaluate the practical side of open-air motoring through genuine Mazda MX-5 accessories. Mazda’s accessory materials include categories such as wind blockers and outdoor vehicle covers, but fitment, pricing, availability, and any successor compatibility must be checked for the specific car and market. Current accessories do not reveal the next MX-5’s equipment list.

The next MX-5 will earn the best-ever label by being the most complete lightweight sports car, not by becoming the most advanced or fastest car with two seats. Mazda appears to understand that assignment: preserve the small dimensions, low mass, open-air access, manual involvement, and chassis communication, then use new technology only where it protects those qualities.

That is why the successor can credibly become the best Miata ever despite the uncertainty. A better cabin, improved refinement, stronger safety integration, more usable climate control, and a powertrain that remains viable under future regulations would make the car easier to enjoy every day. None of those gains matters if they sever the Jinba Ittai connection.

Will the next MX-5 still have a manual transmission?
A manual transmission is a reported intention for the next MX-5, not an official guarantee. Mazda has not confirmed whether a future hybrid or battery-electric version would use a conventional manual gearbox.
Will the next Miata use the Skyactiv-Z engine?
Mazda has not confirmed Skyactiv-Z for the next MX-5. Official Mazda strategy material discusses Skyactiv-Z within broader powertrain development, but no reviewed source connects that engine to a production successor.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: The next Mazda MX-5 Miata could be the best ever if Mazda adds everyday refinement and regulatory flexibility without allowing electrification, safety hardware, or luxury features to overwhelm the car’s low-mass, manual, open-air character. As of August 13, 2026, that is a well-supported conditional prediction—not a confirmed specification or launch promise.
