The Most Reliable V-8 Pickup Trucks From the Last Decade

A used 2021-or-earlier Toyota Tundra with the 5.7-liter V-8 is a leading candidate, but dependability rankings are study- and model-specific—not engine guarantees.

For a used V-8 pickup, a 2021-or-earlier Toyota Tundra with the 5.7-liter V-8 is a leading long-term candidate—but there is no proven, decade-wide winner. J.D. Power ranked the Tundra highest among large light-duty pickups in its 2021 and 2022 dependability studies, then named the Chevrolet Silverado the segment leader in 2025. Those are whole-model rankings, not controlled comparisons of V-8 engines, and a specific truck’s history and condition still matter more than a badge-level result.

What is the most reliable V-8 pickup truck from the last decade?

The strongest candidate supported by these results is a used Toyota Tundra from the generation that offered the 5.7-liter V-8, generally model years through 2021. The case rests on the Tundra’s top ranking in J.D. Power’s large light-duty pickup Vehicle Dependability Study (VDS) in both 2021 and 2022, alongside a secondary analysis that also favors the older V-8 Tundra for long-term use.

That is evidence in favor of the model, not proof that every Tundra year, engine, or individual truck is equally dependable. The J.D. Power rankings cover pickup models as a whole; they do not isolate V-8 versions. Use the results to create a shortlist, then judge the exact year, powertrain, records, and condition.

What the pickup dependability rankings show

Study Large light-duty pickup result What the result measures
J.D. Power 2021 VDS Toyota Tundra ranked highest; Chevrolet Silverado and Ram 1500 were also in the top three. Owners of 2018 model-year vehicles reported problems after three years of ownership.
J.D. Power 2022 VDS Toyota Tundra ranked highest; Chevrolet Silverado and Ford F-150 were also in the top three. A model-level dependability ranking; the supplied results do not isolate engine options.
J.D. Power 2025 VDS Chevrolet Silverado ranked highest. The segment result indicates no other model performed at or above the segment average. Responses from 34,175 original owners of 2022 model-year vehicles after three years of ownership. The study’s industry average was 202 problems per 100 vehicles, not a truck- or V-8-specific score.

The Tundra’s back-to-back first-place results are a meaningful signal, but they do not establish a permanent winner. The 2025 Silverado result also matters, but it should not be read as evidence that every Silverado engine has the same reliability profile. J.D. Power’s 2025 VDS results describe owners’ experience with the model, not a controlled engine-by-engine test.

Why a study’s year and measure matter

Dependability is not initial quality

The VDS looks at problems reported after three years of ownership. Initial Quality Study results concern early ownership and answer a different question. J.D. Power notes that the 2025 Ford F-150 and Toyota Tundra appeared among the Initial Quality Study’s top three, but neither was in the 2025 VDS top three. Early satisfaction should not be substituted for longer-term dependability.

Different surveys can give different signals

Consumer Reports says its reliability histories draw on subscriber surveys covering about 380,000 vehicles and 20 potential trouble spots across 2000–2025 model years. That approach differs from J.D. Power’s three-year VDS, so a model’s result in one system does not cancel or confirm a result in the other.

How the alternatives compare

Chevrolet Silverado

The Silverado led the large light-duty segment in J.D. Power’s 2025 VDS, but that finding is model-level rather than V-8-specific. Consumer Reports’ 2021 Silverado 1500 page reports below-peer reliability for that model year and includes owner-reported major engine trouble examples, including reports involving the 6.2-liter V-8. Those reports are examples from owners, not a failure-rate estimate for all Silverado V-8 trucks. Check the exact model year and engine rather than applying either result to every Silverado.

Ram 1500

Consumer Reports reports below-peer reliability for the 2021 and 2025 Ram 1500 pages. It lists 15 recalls for the 2021 page and 8 for the 2025 page; recall counts can change, and they do not by themselves measure reliability. For a used Ram, verify the open and completed recalls for the specific vehicle and review its service history.

Ford F-150

The F-150 was in the top three of J.D. Power’s 2022 VDS, but the cited results do not establish a V-8-specific winner. Its appearance in the 2025 Initial Quality Study’s top three is an early-ownership result, not evidence that it ranked among the top three for 2025 dependability.

Keep generations and engines separate

The older Tundra’s 5.7-liter V-8 and the current-generation 2025 Tundra are not the same powertrain. Consumer Reports identifies the 2025 model as having a 3.4-liter V-6 hybrid. A rating or description of the newer truck cannot substantiate a claim about the older V-8, and the older V-8’s reputation does not automatically apply to the newer hybrid.

A secondary Carcody analysis names a used 2021-or-earlier Tundra with the 5.7-liter V-8 as its leading long-term candidate and relays an iSeeCars estimate of a 30.0% chance of reaching 250,000 miles. That figure is an estimate attributed through the secondary analysis—not a guarantee, observed outcome for every truck, or primary survey result. It should not replace inspection of a specific vehicle.

How to assess a used V-8 pickup before buying

  1. Confirm the exact truck. Identify model year, generation, engine, transmission, cab, and bed. Reliability evidence for one configuration does not automatically transfer to another.
  2. Review the service record. Look for documented maintenance and repairs, and ask about gaps or recurring issues. A model ranking cannot tell you how an individual truck was maintained.
  3. Check recalls by VIN. Verify which recalls apply and whether required work was completed. A model-page recall count is not a substitute for a vehicle-specific check.
  4. Assess mileage, corrosion, and condition. Inspect the truck in person and arrange an independent mechanical inspection. Broad survey rankings cannot reveal hidden damage, wear, or a particular VIN’s history.
  5. Match the truck to the job. Confirm towing and payload needs, cab and bed requirements, and total ownership costs. The cited dependability results do not settle those capability or cost comparisons.

Which one should you shortlist?

For a buyer specifically seeking a used full-size pickup with a V-8, start with a 2021-or-earlier Toyota Tundra equipped with the 5.7-liter V-8, then compare its records and condition with the exact Silverado, Ram 1500, or F-150 under consideration. The Tundra’s repeat J.D. Power wins support treating it as a leading candidate, while the newer Silverado result and the differences in other reliability evidence show why no single model-level ranking can decide the purchase for you.
