The Mazda CX-5 is the strongest reliability-first choice supported by the available evidence, with the clearest model-specific dependability signal for the 2022 model year. That is a qualified recommendation—not proof that every CX-5 year is more reliable than every CX-50 or CX-90. For a newer SUV, distinguish early owner ratings from a three-year dependability record; for a used one, inspect the individual vehicle’s history and condition.
Which Mazda SUV is the most reliable?
Choose the CX-5 if reliability is your priority and you want the strongest model-specific evidence available here. Mazda reported that the 2022 CX-5 placed in the top three of its Compact SUV category in J.D. Power’s 2025 U.S. Vehicle Dependability Study (VDS). The study evaluated 2022 model-year vehicles after three years of ownership. Mazda’s report of the study is the source for the CX-5’s category placement.
That evidence supports the 2022 CX-5 in particular; it does not establish a definitive reliability winner across all Mazda SUV years, trims, and powertrains. J.D. Power’s VDS also found Mazda ranked second among mass-market brands, at 161 problems per 100 vehicles. That is a brand-level result, not the CX-5’s individual score. Why model year and type of score matter
A three-year dependability study is different from an early owner rating
The VDS measures reported problems after three years of ownership. By contrast, J.D. Power’s model-page scores use a separate consumer-rating framework. The 2025 CX-5 page reports an overall 82/100 consumer rating based on verified owner opinions and describes feedback after 90 days; it is not a three-year VDS result. J.D. The 2026 CX-5 page reports an 82/100 Quality & Reliability score, but the 2026 vehicle is all-new. That score should not be read as a three-year dependability record for the redesigned SUV. J.D. Power’s VDS found that new models launched for the 2022 model year averaged 241 problems per 100 vehicles, compared with 196 for carryover models; carryover models performed better across all nine categories. Those are study-wide averages, not CX-5-specific results. J.D. Power’s 2026 CX-5 page gives the current model-page score.
Do not compare unlike scores as if they shared a scale
Problems per 100 vehicles, a 100-point owner rating, and a subscriber-survey reliability assessment are different measures. They cover different periods and collect information in different ways, so a higher number on one system does not automatically mean a vehicle is more dependable than a competitor scored by another system.

The available CX-50 and CX-90 evidence does not show either as a stronger reliability choice than the CX-5. It also does not constitute a uniform, current three-model ranking: the evidence comes from different sources, measures, and time periods.

A model-level reliability result cannot tell you whether a particular used SUV was maintained, repaired properly, or damaged. Evaluate the vehicle you are considering rather than relying on the nameplate alone.
