For the 2016–2025 model years, the most convincing reliability choices are not all the newest trucks. The Toyota Tacoma and 2016–2021 Toyota Tundra have the strongest long-term durability records, while the Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and Ram 1500 show better recent dependability than their reputations may suggest.
There is no single reliability scoreboard. J.D. Power measures problems reported by original owners after three years. Consumer Reports combines subscriber trouble data with reliability predictions. iSeeCars estimates how likely vehicles are to reach 250,000 miles. Those methods produce different winners, so the rankings below weigh all three rather than treating one survey as definitive.

Quick ranking: the most reliable pickups from 2016–2025
| Rank | Pickup | Best years or use | Why it ranks here |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Toyota Tacoma | 2016–2023 | Strong midsize reliability and a 25.3% estimated chance of reaching 250,000 miles |
| 2 | Toyota Tundra | 2016–2021 | 30.0% estimated 250,000-mile survival rate, the best among light-duty pickups |
| 3 | Honda Ridgeline | Well-maintained 2017–2023 trucks | Dependable, comfortable daily transportation with above-average longevity |
| 4 | Nissan Frontier | Late previous generation and 2022–2025 | Reasonable midsize reliability and long average ownership period |
| 5 | Chevrolet Silverado 1500 | Engine- and configuration-dependent | Good recent dependability results and a 12.9% 250,000-mile estimate |
| 6 | Ram 1500 | Recent three-year dependability | Top 2026 J.D. Power result, but weak extreme-mileage data |
| 7 | Ford F-150 | Carefully selected configuration | Easy to service and widely supported, but only average in several measures |
This is an editorial ranking for buyers shopping used or nearly new trucks. It is not an official ranking from one organization, and a well-maintained lower-ranked truck can be a better purchase than a neglected top-ranked model.

Consumer Reports rated the 2022 and 2023 Tacoma more reliable than the average vehicle from their respective model years. The Tacoma also ranked highest in the midsize-pickup segment of the 2025 J.D. Power Vehicle Dependability Study. iSeeCars estimated a 25.3% chance of reaching 250,000 miles, second among all trucks in its 2025 longevity study.
The 2024 Tacoma is a redesign year, so it should not automatically be assumed to have the same track record. Toyota issued service bulletins for some 2024 automatic-transmission trucks involving fault codes and transmission and torque-converter replacement. Certain manual-transmission trucks could also lose access to second, fourth, and sixth gears. These conditions do not mean every 2024 Tacoma is defective, but they make VIN and repair-history checks particularly important.
Some 2022–2023 Tacomas were recalled because improperly secured rear-axle fasteners could allow the axle shaft subassembly to separate. Confirm completion through the VIN before buying.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2. Toyota Tundra: the strongest full-size truck for proven longevity
For buyers who value durability above fuel economy, ride refinement, and modern technology, the 2016–2021 Tundra is the safest Tundra generation to target within this decade.
iSeeCars estimated that the Tundra had a 30.0% chance of reaching 250,000 miles, the highest figure for any light-duty pickup in its 2025 study. The older truck uses a proven V8-powered platform, although that does not eliminate the need to inspect for neglected fluids, rust, frame damage, towing abuse, and worn suspension components.
The 2022 model introduced a new platform and turbocharged engines. It should not be treated as equivalent to the older V8 generation. Consumer Reports reported below-average reliability for the redesigned truck in recent surveys. Certain 2022–2023 Tundras were recalled because manufacturing debris could cause engine-bearing failure and an engine stall. A later recall expanded the issue to certain 2024 trucks. Run the VIN through the NHTSA recall search and verify that any required remedy has actually been completed.

3. Honda Ridgeline: the dependable everyday pickup
The Ridgeline is a good fit for owners who need an open bed, all-weather capability, and occasional hauling rather than maximum towing capacity or heavy commercial use. Its car-based construction gives it a more comfortable and composed ride than most body-on-frame pickups.
Consumer Reports describes the current Ridgeline as one of the most civilized pickups it has tested. iSeeCars estimated a 14.7% chance of reaching 250,000 miles, slightly above the 13.0% average for trucks in that study. The 2024 Ridgeline, however, was rated about average for reliability, so it should not be presented as the class leader in every category.
Inspect the tailgate-camera wiring on 2020–2024 trucks. A recall covering approximately 187,290 Ridgelines addressed fatigue in the rearview-camera tailgate harness, which could prevent the camera image from appearing. Check recall status rather than assuming the repair was performed.
4. Nissan Frontier: a sensible midsize alternative
The Frontier deserves consideration, especially in the final years of the previous generation and the 2022–2025 generation after its redesign had been in service for a while. Consumer Reports currently expects the 2026 Frontier to be more reliable than the average new vehicle, based on 2023–2025 model data. That is supporting evidence for the current platform, not a guarantee about every earlier truck.
iSeeCars found that Frontier owners kept their trucks for an average of 9.1 years, the longest average ownership period among the light-duty pickups in its study. The Tacoma averaged 9.0 years and the Tundra 8.8 years. Ownership length is not the same as mechanical reliability, but it is useful context.
The Frontier’s weakness is high-mileage evidence. iSeeCars estimated only a 5.0% chance of reaching 250,000 miles, well below the truck average of 13.0%. It is therefore a credible midsize alternative, but not a direct longevity rival to the Tacoma.

5. Chevrolet Silverado 1500: better recent results than expected
The Silverado 1500 has a stronger recent dependability record than some buyers expect. Consumer Reports rated the 2025 Silverado more reliable than other vehicles from the same model year, and the truck placed second in the large light-duty category of the 2026 J.D. Power Vehicle Dependability Study.
Its iSeeCars result was more moderate: a 12.9% estimated chance of reaching 250,000 miles, almost exactly the 13.0% average for all trucks in that study. That puts it well ahead of the F-150, Frontier, and Ram 1500 on that specific measure, although it trails the Tacoma and Tundra.
Silverado reliability varies substantially by engine, transmission, drivetrain, model year, and usage. When shopping, identify the exact powertrain and inspect maintenance records rather than treating every Silverado 1500 as mechanically identical.

6. Ram 1500: the recent dependability winner, not the longevity winner
The Ram 1500 illustrates why reliability rankings need context. The 2026 J.D. Power Vehicle Dependability Study placed it first in the large light-duty pickup segment, ahead of the Silverado. That study measures problems experienced by original owners of three-year-old vehicles, so the result primarily reflects 2023 model-year trucks, not brand-new 2026 examples.
Its long-term numbers are much less encouraging. iSeeCars estimated only a 3.5% chance of reaching 250,000 miles, the lowest result among the light-duty pickups in that study. A Ram can therefore perform well during its first three years while remaining a weaker bet for extreme mileage.
The 2025 Ram 1500 also brought a major powertrain change: the available Hemi V8 was replaced by turbocharged inline-six engines. Consumer Reports identifies 2025 as a redesign year and notes that extensive redesigns bring additional reliability risk. Used-truck buyers seeking proven powertrains may prefer a well-maintained earlier-generation Ram rather than assuming the new engines will match the old ones.

7. Ford F-150: practical and serviceable, but not the decade’s leader
The F-150 remains an easy truck to own in practical terms. Parts are widely available, nearly every region has Ford service coverage, and the supply of used examples makes it easier to find a particular cab, bed, engine, and price combination.
That convenience should not be confused with category-leading reliability. Consumer Reports rated the 2023 F-150 about average for its model year. iSeeCars estimated only a 5.9% chance of reaching 250,000 miles. In the 2026 J.D. Power study, the F-150 tied behind the Ram 1500 and Silverado in the large light-duty segment.
Some 2022–2023 F-150s with the 10-speed automatic were included in a recall involving a loose bolt inside the transmission that could prevent the park pawl from engaging. The affected population was limited, but a VIN check is still essential.

It is not fair to compare a heavy-duty diesel pickup directly with a half-ton truck. HD models use different frames, suspensions, transmissions, axles, and operating cycles. Their higher towing capacity also means that the previous owner may have subjected the truck to much greater loads.
iSeeCars’ 2025 estimates for reaching 250,000 miles were:

How to buy a reliable used pickup
- Run the 17-character VIN through NHTSA’s recall search. Recalls apply to specific vehicles, not every truck wearing the same model name.
- Demand maintenance documentation. Look for transmission-fluid, differential, cooling-system, brake, and—on diesels—emissions-system service.
- Inspect the underside on a lift. Check the frame, suspension mounts, brake lines, bed supports, axle housings, and body mounts for corrosion, cracks, or accident repairs.
- Look for workload evidence. A truck used for commercial towing, overloaded hauling, off-road driving, or repeated short trips may be riskier than a higher-mileage truck used lightly and serviced properly.
- Scan for stored fault codes. A cleared warning light is not proof that the underlying issue was fixed. Have an independent shop scan all modules and perform a pre-purchase inspection.
- Match the truck to the job. Using a half-ton beyond its payload or towing rating creates reliability problems regardless of the badge on the grille.
Condition matters more than a ranking once a truck is several years old. A Tacoma with neglected fluids and a rusty frame is not a better purchase than a carefully maintained Silverado with complete records.
What the reliability studies actually tell you
J.D. Power’s dependability results are useful for identifying problems owners experienced during a vehicle’s first three years. They do not measure what happens after 200,000 miles. iSeeCars’ 250,000-mile estimates are better suited to long-term survival, but they are still population-level estimates rather than guarantees for a particular truck. Consumer Reports adds owner-reported trouble data and predictions, but its ratings can change as new survey results arrive.
That is why the Tacoma and older Tundra lead this list for long-term ownership, while the Ram 1500 can lead a recent three-year dependability ranking without being the best choice for a quarter-million-mile work truck.

FAQ
What is the most reliable pickup truck from 2016 to 2025?
The Toyota Tacoma, particularly the 2016–2023 third-generation trucks, has the strongest overall reliability case when owner surveys, recent dependability results, and long-term mileage data are considered together. A specific truck’s maintenance and condition still matter more than the model’s reputation.
Which full-size pickup lasts the longest?
The 2016–2021 Toyota Tundra is the strongest light-duty full-size choice for proven longevity. iSeeCars estimated a 30.0% chance of reaching 250,000 miles, the highest figure among light-duty pickups in its 2025 study.
Is the Ram 1500 reliable?
It can be dependable, especially over the first three years. The Ram 1500 ranked first in the large light-duty segment of the 2026 J.D. Power study, but iSeeCars estimated only a 3.5% chance of reaching 250,000 miles. That makes it a recent dependability leader, not the strongest extreme-mileage choice.
What should I check before buying a used pickup?
Run the VIN through NHTSA’s recall database, verify maintenance records, inspect the frame and underbody for rust or damage, scan for stored fault codes, and have an independent mechanic perform a pre-purchase inspection. Pay special attention to evidence of towing, overloading, fleet use, or off-road abuse.

The Bottom Line
For the safest long-term bet, start with a well-maintained 2016–2023 Toyota Tacoma. If you need a full-size truck and prioritize proven durability, look for a 2016–2021 Toyota Tundra. The Honda Ridgeline is better for light-duty daily use, the Frontier is a sensible midsize alternative, and the Silverado and Ram deserve consideration when their specific powertrains and service histories check out.
Whatever the badge, verify recalls by VIN and pay for an independent inspection. Reliability data can narrow the search, but it cannot compensate for rust, abuse, missing maintenance, or an unresolved recall.
