Current reliability data covers a few model years, a few countries, and three different ways of measuring faults, and no single source tracks the same models across decades. What the 2026 data does support is a shortlist of four models with positive signals and one cautionary example, each tied to a named source, age group, and measure. This article sets out that shortlist and explains how to read each figure.
Why an all-time top ten cannot be written from current data
Mass-market battery-electric cars are a recent product, and the reliability sources that rate them reach back only a few model years. An all-time ranking would need the same measure, applied to the same models, across several generations and markets. No source reviewed here offers that.
Two further problems make a ten-place list unsafe. The sources measure different things in different countries, so their results cannot be placed on one scale. And the evidence covers only the models named below. Filling the remaining slots with cars that have a reputation for reliability would replace evidence with reputation. The defensible output is a shortlist with its measures attached.
Three sources, three different questions
The three main sources answer related but different questions. Consumer Reports asks owners what went wrong. ADAC, the German automobile club, counts the cars that broke down badly enough to need roadside assistance, expressed as its breakdown index (Pannenkennziffer, or PKZ), which is breakdowns per 1,000 vehicles in each group. What Car?, a UK-based car magazine, runs an owner survey and scores reliability across 16 categories.

The full model-level tables and sample sizes behind the Consumer Reports and What Car? results are not stated in the public summaries used here. Check each publisher’s complete report before drawing a purchase conclusion. The Consumer Reports summary also names different Tesla models in different categories, so read the category labels closely.
The shortlist, model by model
Tesla Model 3
The Model 3 has the broadest positive evidence on this list. Consumer Reports’ 2026 survey named it the most reliable electric car, and ADAC’s 2026 release gave three-year-old Model 3s in Germany a breakdown index of 0.7. These are separate measures from separate populations. They point in the same direction, but neither establishes that the Model 3 is the most reliable electric car ever built.

Tesla Model Y
Consumer Reports’ 2026 survey named the Model Y its most reliable electric SUV. The ADAC material cited here gives no comparable German breakdown figure for the Model Y, so this entry rests on a single survey.
BMW i3 (used market)
ADAC’s 2026 release gave three-year-old BMW i3s an index of 0.4, the lowest of the EVs it names in that three-year-old comparison. The measure is roadside breakdowns only. It says nothing about owner satisfaction, repair costs, or durability beyond three years. BMW ended production of the i3 in 2022, so this result describes cars already on the used market, not a current model.

Kia EV3
What Car?’s 2026 owner survey gave the EV3 a 100% reliability rating, one of four models to receive that score. It is the most encouraging number on this list for a newer car, and also the least tested. The result reflects one survey of owners at one point in the car’s life. It does not establish long-term reliability across future model years.
The cautionary case: Hyundai IONIQ 5
ADAC’s 2025 release reported 22.4 breakdowns per 1,000 two-year-old IONIQ 5s. That is far higher than any figure for the models above, although it was measured at a different age. ADAC linked the high result to problems with the integrated charging control unit (ICCU), and the release noted a recall issued by a German authority. Read this as a result for the model years and components involved, not a verdict on every IONIQ 5. Before buying a used example, check its recall status with the manufacturer using the vehicle identification number (VIN), and ask the seller for proof that any ICCU recall work was completed.

EVs against combustion cars: what the broad figures show
ADAC’s 2026 release offers the clearest like-for-like comparison in one market. Its German text reads: “Ein vier Jahre altes Elektroauto wies 2025 eine PKZ von 6,5 auf, gleich alte Verbrenner lagen schon bei 12,5.” In English, as a translation: a four-year-old electric car had a breakdown index of 6.5 in 2025, and same-age combustion cars were already at 12.5 (ADAC e.V., 2026). These figures are roadside breakdowns in Germany, not a global defect rate.
A different picture appears in Consumer Reports’ 2024 survey. As reported by the Associated Press, it found 42% more reported problems for EVs than for gasoline vehicles. This is a secondary account of the survey. The two results do not contradict each other. Consumer Reports counts problems that owners report, which can include faults that never leave a car stranded. ADAC counts breakdowns that required a callout. Neither is a complete count of defects.

The Associated Press also quoted Jake Fisher, head of Consumer Reports’ automobile test center, in 2024: “As the automakers get more experience with the new technologies and new platforms, they will improve.” That is an expectation stated in 2024, not a guarantee about any current model.
Where EVs still fail: the 12-volt battery
The largest single cause of roadside breakdowns in ADAC’s 2025 release was not the high-voltage traction battery. In 2024, 44.9% of breakdown cases involved the starter battery, the small 12-volt battery that runs the car’s low-voltage electronics. An electric car still needs this battery, and it can fail like one in any other vehicle.
- A portable 12-volt jump starter is a sensible item to carry, but it does not make the car more reliable.
- Whether and how to jump-start a particular EV is set out in its owner’s manual. EV procedures differ from those for combustion cars, so follow the manual for that model.
How to read any EV reliability ranking
Use these questions before you trust a ranking, including the shortlist above:
- Model year and generation: a 2023 car and a 2026 car are not the same product, and a result for one does not carry over to the other.
- Geography: German roadside data, US owner surveys, and UK owner surveys describe different fleets, climates, and driving conditions.
- Sample base: check whether the result comes from survey respondents or from all registered vehicles in an age group, and how large that base is.
- Fault severity and downtime: a loose trim panel and a dead battery both count as a problem in some surveys, so ask how faults are weighted.
- Breakdown frequency versus owner-reported faults: a breakdown index and a survey score answer different questions, and neither replaces the other.
- Components covered: confirm whether the score includes the traction battery, the 12-volt system, charging hardware, software, and cabin electronics.
A ranking that names its measure, its region, and its model years is more useful than a single ten-place list that does not.
