There isn’t enough comparable evidence to name ten diesel trucks as a defensible reliability ranking. The best-supported current model-level signal is for the Chevrolet Silverado HD: J.D. Power ranked it highest for dependability among large heavy-duty pickups in its 2025 study. That award covers the model line, not just its Duramax diesel. For other current trucks—and for older Cummins and Power Stroke favorites—the available evidence supports a useful shortlist, not a proven engine-by-engine order.

What does “most reliable” mean for a diesel truck?

Reliability claims can refer to different things: owner-reported problems, initial quality, long-term engine durability, or the condition of one used truck. Those measures are not interchangeable. A model-level dependability award does not establish that its diesel engine is more durable than every rival, and a truck’s horsepower or towing capacity says nothing by itself about how long it will last.

J.D. Power’s 2025 U.S. Vehicle Dependability Study surveyed 34,175 original owners of 2022 model-year vehicles after three years of ownership. Fieldwork ran from August through November 2024. The study’s industry average was 202 problems per 100 vehicles (PP100); lower scores indicate fewer reported problems. Its diesel figure was 233 PP100 across diesel vehicles of all kinds—not a score for diesel pickups or for any individual engine. J.D. Power’s study release explains the scope.

Because the available sources do not provide ten distinct trucks with comparable engine-specific reliability results, this article covers the eight candidates named in the available roundup and distinguishes the strength of evidence for each. It is a shortlist, not a numbered reliability ranking.

Current diesel trucks to compare

These six current candidates span light-duty and heavy-duty pickups. Choose the class based on the load and work you actually need the truck to handle; an HD truck’s greater capability may be unnecessary for lighter duties.

Truck Diesel named What the evidence supports
Chevrolet Silverado 1500 3.0-liter Duramax inline-six Edmunds identifies it as a current diesel option; no engine-specific dependability award or score is established here. Edmunds’ roundup
GMC Sierra 1500 3.0-liter Duramax inline-six Edmunds identifies it as a current diesel option; no engine-specific dependability award or score is established here. Edmunds’ roundup
Chevrolet Silverado HD 6.6-liter Duramax V8 Silverado HD ranked highest in dependability in J.D. Power’s large heavy-duty pickup segment; the result is for the model, not the diesel configuration. J.D. Power
GMC Sierra HD 6.6-liter Duramax V8 J.D. Power’s summary places Sierra HD second in heavy-duty dependability; this is a model-level result, not an engine-specific finding. J.D. Power
Ram Heavy Duty 6.7-liter Cummins inline-six Edmunds names the current diesel option; a directly comparable engine-specific dependability score is not established here. Edmunds’ roundup
Ford F-Series Super Duty 6.7-liter Power Stroke V8 Edmunds names the current diesel option. J.D. Power reports Super Duty leads in appeal and initial quality, not dependability. Edmunds; J.D. Power

Chevrolet Silverado HD: the clearest dependability signal

Among the current candidates, Silverado HD has the strongest model-level dependability evidence in the sources here: J.D. Power ranked it highest in the large heavy-duty pickup segment for 2025. That finding is useful when comparing model lines, but it does not isolate diesel versions or prove that an individual Duramax truck will outperform a competing truck.

Chevrolet lists an available 6.6-liter Duramax turbo-diesel V8 for the 2026 Silverado HD, rated by the manufacturer at 470 horsepower and 975 lb-ft of torque, paired with a 10-speed Allison automatic. Chevrolet also advertises up to 36,000 pounds of available trailering weight. These are manufacturer specifications and maximum capability figures, not reliability findings; the towing limit for a particular truck depends on its configuration. Check the truck’s documentation and applicable ratings before towing. Chevrolet’s Silverado HD specifications.

GMC Sierra HD: a second model-level signal

J.D. Power places Sierra HD second in heavy-duty dependability in its 2025 summary. As with the Silverado HD result, this is a model-level award rather than a diesel-engine comparison. Edmunds names the 6.6-liter Duramax as its diesel option. Compare the actual truck’s configuration, service support, equipment and price rather than treating the award as proof of a particular engine’s lifespan.

Ford Super Duty: separate dependability from other awards

The Super Duty’s 6.7-liter Power Stroke is a current diesel option named by Edmunds. J.D. Power’s summary says Super Duty ranked highest in appeal and initial quality, which are different measures from dependability. Those results should not be read as a long-term reliability ranking.

Ram Heavy Duty: evaluate the specific configuration

Edmunds identifies the current Ram Heavy Duty’s 6.7-liter Cummins inline-six, but the sources here do not provide a comparable engine-specific dependability score. If it fits your work, compare the truck’s configuration, intended load, warranty and documented service history against alternatives.

Silverado 1500 and Sierra 1500: light-duty Duramax choices

Edmunds names a 3.0-liter Duramax inline-six option for both half-ton models. The available evidence does not supply an engine-specific reliability award for either. They are candidates to consider when you need a diesel pickup but not the maximum capability of a heavy-duty truck; make the choice around your workload, equipment preferences and the individual vehicle rather than an unsupported reliability ranking.

Older diesel trucks with durability reputations

Edmunds also names two historic candidates: Dodge Ram trucks with the 5.9-liter Cummins and Ford F-Series trucks with the 7.3-liter Power Stroke. Their longevity reputations can help identify models to investigate, but reputation is not evidence that a particular old truck is sound. At this age, maintenance records, condition and inspection findings matter more than a broad label.

1994.5–2003 Ford F-Series 7.3-liter Power Stroke V8 Durability reputation is a starting point, not a substitute for checking age-related condition and service history. Edmunds’ roundup

How to choose a dependable diesel for your needs

  1. Set the job first. Define the trailer or payload you need to carry, how often you will do it, and whether light-duty or heavy-duty capability is appropriate. Verify the exact truck’s ratings; a model’s advertised maximum may not apply to every configuration.
  2. Separate model evidence from engine evidence. Treat the J.D. Power HD dependability results as evidence about the model segment, not a verdict on each diesel engine. Treat an editorially noted longevity reputation as a reason to investigate, not a guarantee.
  3. Compare like with like. Match truck class, engine, transmission, model year, configuration and intended workload. The available sources do not provide a harmonized comparison of prices, ownership costs or engine failure rates across these candidates.
  4. For a used truck, prioritize records and condition. Review maintenance documentation and have the specific vehicle inspected by a qualified diesel technician before purchase. A well-documented example is a more meaningful prospect than a neglected truck with a famous engine name.
  5. Check service support and ownership fit. Confirm that qualified service is available where you live or work, and consider warranty coverage and purchase and operating costs alongside capability.

What the reliability evidence cannot tell you

J.D. Power’s 2025 study describes owners’ experiences with 2022 model-year vehicles after three years; it cannot directly rank 2026 trucks or isolate diesel engine variants. The 233 PP100 diesel figure covers all diesel vehicles in the study and should not be used to claim that diesel pickups are more or less dependable than gas pickups.

The study also reported that Silverado HD ranked second in initial quality, while Super Duty ranked highest in appeal and initial quality; those categories are not interchangeable with dependability. J.D. Power director of auto benchmarking Jason Norton said the three-year-old vehicles were built amid supply-chain issues, record-high vehicle prices and pandemic-related personnel disruption. His comment provides context for the study cohort, not an explanation of any particular truck’s result. J.D. Power’s release.
