U.S. reliability evidence published that year does, however, identify nine Toyota and Lexus segment-award winners and a gasoline Toyota RAV4 that Consumer Reports rated its most reliable vehicle. The shortlist below brings those ten model placements together without implying they were ranked against one another.
What “2024 reliability” means here
The evidence covers the U.S. market, but it mostly reflects owners’ experience with vehicles from earlier model years—not the lifetime reliability of every new 2024 vehicle. J.D. Power’s 2024 U.S. Vehicle Dependability Study (VDS) surveyed 30,595 original owners of 2021 model-year vehicles after three years of ownership. Its fieldwork ran from August through November 2023, and it tracked owner-reported problems across 184 areas in nine categories. The measure is problems per 100 vehicles (PP100), so a lower score is better. J.D. Power’s 2024 VDS
Consumer Reports’ 2024 subscriber survey, as reported by the Associated Press, included about 300,000 vehicle owners and primarily covered model years 2022, 2023, and 2024. It is a different survey with a different sample and scoring approach; AP notes that its subscribers do not represent all U.S. vehicle purchasers or all buyers of particular vehicle types. Ten evidence-backed Japanese-brand vehicles
This is an editorial shortlist, not a shared top-ten ranking. Nine models below won a J.D. Power 2024 dependability award in their own segments; the tenth is the gasoline RAV4’s placement in the Consumer Reports survey reported by AP. The J.D. Power award winners are all 2021 model-year vehicles. Consumer Reports’ reported RAV4 placement comes from a survey that mainly covered 2022–2024 vehicles, without a single model year specified for that placement.

J.D. Power’s 2024 Dependability Awards and Ratings list the segment winners. The awards help identify strong results within a vehicle class, but they do not establish that, for example, a compact car is more dependable than a premium SUV. The RAV4 result comes from a separate survey and cannot be placed on the same numerical scale as J.D. Power’s awards.
What the brand-level results say
In the J.D. Power 2024 VDS, Lexus recorded 135 PP100, the best overall brand result, while Toyota recorded 147 PP100, the best result among mass-market brands. The study average was 190 PP100. These are brand scores, not individual model scores, and they do not mean every Lexus or Toyota performs equally. J.D. Power’s 2024 VDS

Consumer Reports’ survey produced a different brand order: Subaru ranked first, Lexus second, and Toyota third, with Honda and Acura completing the top five, according to AP. The two surveys should not be combined into a homemade ranking: their populations, measures, and scopes differ.
Other findings that put the results in context
Problems owners reported in the J.D. Power study
- The 2024 VDS industry average was 190 PP100, four problems per 100 vehicles higher than in 2023.
- Infotainment was the most problematic category, at 49.1 PP100. Android Auto and Apple CarPlay connectivity was the leading specific issue, at 6.3 PP100.
- By powertrain, the study recorded 256 PP100 for battery-electric vehicles, 216 PP100 for plug-in hybrids, 191 PP100 for conventional hybrids, and 187 PP100 for gasoline vehicles.
These are study-wide findings, not predictions for every vehicle with a given powertrain. In particular, they should not be read as a powertrain score for any one vehicle in the shortlist.

Powertrain findings in the Consumer Reports survey
AP reported that Consumer Reports found electric vehicles had 42% more problems than gasoline vehicles on average in its 2024 survey, down from 79% more in its 2023 survey. Plug-in hybrids had 70% more problems than gasoline vehicles in the 2024 survey. These are relative problem percentages from that survey, not PP100 scores, so they cannot be compared numerically with J.D. Power’s figures.

The AP report names the Toyota Corolla after the gasoline RAV4 in Consumer Reports’ reliability results. It places the RAV4 Prime plug-in hybrid third and the RAV4 hybrid fourth. These are additional reported placements, not part of the ten-model shortlist above, and they do not turn the separate surveys into a common ranking.

How to use these results when comparing vehicles
- Match the class first. Compare compact cars with compact cars, pickups with pickups, and premium SUVs with vehicles in the same segment. A segment award does not prove cross-class superiority.
- Check the exact model year and configuration. The J.D. Power awards listed here apply to 2021 vehicles; the Tacoma and Tundra awards specifically name 2WD versions. Do not assume the result carries over unchanged to another generation, model year, or drivetrain.
- Separate brands from models. Lexus and Toyota’s brand-level J.D. Power scores offer broad context, while a segment award or a Consumer Reports model placement speaks to a particular model result.
- Keep survey measures distinct. J.D. Power reports PP100; the Consumer Reports findings cited by AP use relative problem percentages. Different samples and methods mean those numbers are not interchangeable.
- Read a survey result as evidence, not a promise. Owner-reported problems can identify patterns in the population studied, but do not guarantee that a particular used or new vehicle will be trouble-free.
