This is an editorial ranking of widely recognized heavy-duty diesel-engine-oil brands, judged by specification coverage, OEM approvals, product range, availability, and usefulness across real-world applications.
None of these brands is inherently “bad.” The lowest-ranked product may be the right choice for a fleet if it carries the required approval. The decisive check is always the engine manufacturer’s specification, followed by SAE viscosity, API category, operating conditions, and price.

How these diesel-oil brands were ranked
The ranking covers heavy-duty engine oils for diesel trucks, motorhomes, agricultural machinery, construction equipment, and commercial fleets. It does not compare diesel-fuel additives, gear oils, two-stroke marine oils, or passenger-car motor oils.
Availability matters because an excellent oil is less useful if it is difficult to source during a trip or maintenance stop. However, availability does not override technical requirements. A readily available 15W-40 oil is still the wrong choice if the engine requires a different viscosity or an OEM-specific approval.

5. Phillips 66 Guardol
Phillips 66 Guardol ranks fifth not because its technical credentials are weak, but because it is generally more fleet- and distributor-oriented than the brands commonly found at national retail stores.
Relevant Guardol products include ECT synthetic-blend oils in SAE 10W-30 and 15W-40, Guardol Fleet EC products, and fuel-economy-focused formulas. Guardol ECT coverage includes API CK-4 and CJ-4, Cummins CES 20086, Detroit Diesel DFS 93K222, Mack EOS-4.5, Volvo VDS-4.5, and Ford WSS-M2C171-F1, depending on the specific product.
That last qualification is important: specifications belong to individual formulas, not automatically to every oil sold under the Guardol name. Check the product data sheet and container before buying.

4. Valvoline Premium Blue
Valvoline Premium Blue earns a higher position because of its long-standing Cummins connection and its broad coverage across diesel, gasoline, and natural-gas fleet applications.
Premium Blue One Solution Gen2 is available in SAE 10W-30 and 15W-40 grades and is listed as meeting or exceeding API CK-4, CJ-4, CI-4 PLUS, CI-4, CH-4, SP, and SN Plus requirements. Valvoline identifies Premium Blue as exclusively endorsed and recommended by Cummins. Cummins also announced Premium Blue 8600 in 2025, describing it as an API CK-4-based formulation that meets or exceeds Cummins CES 20086.
For a Cummins-powered pickup, motorhome, or commercial truck, that makes Premium Blue a particularly logical starting point. It is not, however, a universal answer for every diesel engine. The manual still determines the required viscosity and specification.
Best use: Cummins engines, motorhomes, commercial fleets, and mixed diesel/gasoline/natural-gas operations.
3. Chevron Delo
Chevron Delo is one of the most versatile choices in the group. The Delo 400 family includes conventional, synthetic-blend, full-synthetic, low-ash, CK-4, and FA-4 products.
- Delo 400 XLE: synthetic-blend products, including SAE 10W-30 and 15W-40.
- Delo 400 XSP: full-synthetic products in grades such as SAE 5W-30, 5W-40, and 15W-40.
- Delo 400 XSP-FA: lower-viscosity FA-4 products for approved applications.
- Delo 600 ADF: ultra-low-ash products for certain diesel and compressed-natural-gas fleet applications.
This range helps operators standardize lubricants across different equipment, but it also creates a greater risk of buying the wrong formula. CK-4 and FA-4 are not interchangeable categories, and products with similar names can have different intended applications.
Delo 400 XLE SAE 10W-30, for example, is intended for four-stroke diesel and gasoline engines where API CK-4 or SN and SAE 10W-30 are required. Product-specific claims about oxidation control, wear, deposits, or fuel economy should not be generalized to every Delo oil.

Best use: mixed fleets, long-haul trucks, severe-duty equipment, and operators who need several viscosity and formulation choices.
2. Mobil Delvac
Mobil Delvac ranks second for buyers who place a premium on severe-service capability, full-synthetic choices, and broad commercial-fleet coverage.
The current range includes Mobil Delvac 1 ESP full-synthetic oils in grades such as 0W-40, 5W-30, and 5W-40; Mobil Delvac Extreme CK-4 in 10W-30 and 15W-40; and Mobil Delvac 1300 Super CK-4 in 10W-30 and 15W-40. Selected Delvac Extreme FE and Super FE products are intended for approved FA-4 applications.
Mobil reports a fleet case in which Delvac Extreme helped extend an oil-drain interval from 24,000 to 36,000 miles. That is a fleet result, not a blanket recommendation. Actual drain intervals depend on the engine, oil analysis, vehicle condition, load, idle time, environment, and the manufacturer’s maintenance schedule.

Full synthetic can be especially useful in very cold starts, high operating temperatures, and demanding duty cycles. It does not automatically authorize longer drain intervals or make an oil suitable for an engine that requires another specification.
Best use: commercial fleets, severe service, cold-weather operation, and buyers seeking full-synthetic heavy-duty oil.
1. Shell Rotella
Shell Rotella is the best overall general-purpose choice in this ranking because it combines extensive product coverage with unusually broad availability through auto-parts stores, truck-service outlets, agricultural suppliers, fleet channels, and online retailers.
The family includes:
- Rotella T4: conventional heavy-duty oil.
- Rotella T5: synthetic-blend oil.
- Rotella T6: full-synthetic oil.
- Selected CK-4 and FA-4 products: for engines specifically approved for those categories.
Common grades include SAE 10W-30, 15W-40, and 5W-40, although the correct choice depends on the engine and climate. Shell lists Rotella T6 15W-40 as API CK-4 and identifies approvals or specifications including Cummins CES 20086, Detroit DFS 93K222, Mack EOS-4.5, Volvo VDS-4.5, Ford WSS-M2C171-F1, Allison TES 439, and Caterpillar ECF-3.
A 5W-40 and a 15W-40 both have SAE 40 high-temperature viscosity. The first number describes cold-temperature performance: the 5W-40 is designed to flow more readily during cold starts than the 15W-40. That does not mean 5W-40 is automatically better; the manual and operating temperature range still control.
Best use: owner-operators, pickup owners, agricultural equipment users, mixed fleets, and anyone who values easy sourcing and multiple grade choices.
CK-4 versus FA-4: the specification mistake that matters most
API CK-4 is the current heavy-duty diesel category for many high-speed, four-stroke diesel engines designed around 2017 on-highway and Tier 4 non-road emissions standards, as well as earlier engines. API says CK-4 exceeds the performance requirements of CJ-4, CI-4 PLUS, CI-4, and CH-4.
Rank #3
- Synthetic blend 15W-40 diesel engine oil with Triple Protection Plus technology protects against wear, deposits, and oil breakdown
- Ideal for on-highway fleets, construction, and agricultural machinery, and diesel pickup trucks — including high-power vehicles that require resistance to heat and stress
- Triple Protection Plus technology offers better low-temperature flow, which delivers excellent equipment protection, long engine life, and maintains viscosity control under high temperatures
- Delivers good engine cleanliness and protection against piston deposits, ensuring engine and component reliability at extended oil drain intervals
- Advanced low-ash formulation helps control the blocking or poisoning of exhaust after-treatment devices, helping maintain vehicle emission compliance and engine fuel efficiency
API FA-4 is different. It covers certain lower-viscosity XW-30 oils for engines specifically designed to use them. FA-4 is not backward-compatible with CK-4, CJ-4, CI-4 PLUS, CI-4, or CH-4.
Do not treat FA-4 as a newer replacement for CK-4. For example, Volvo maps VDS-4.5 to CK-4 and VDS-5.0 to FA-4. Cummins uses its own CES 20086 requirement for CK-4 oils. These OEM specifications can matter more than the API category alone.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to choose the right diesel oil
- Read the engine or vehicle manual. Look for the required API category, OEM specification, viscosity, and drain interval.
- Confirm the API category. Do not substitute FA-4 for CK-4 unless the manufacturer explicitly approves FA-4.
- Check the exact product label. Verify that the specific formula—not merely the brand—lists the required approval or specification.
- Choose the SAE grade for the climate and engine. A 5W-40 may improve cold-start flow compared with 15W-40, but it must still be approved for the engine.
- Consider the duty cycle. Heavy loads, long idling, dust, high temperatures, short trips, and cold starts can affect the appropriate oil and service interval.
- Follow the maintenance schedule. Synthetic oil alone does not justify extending the drain interval. Use the manufacturer’s interval or a properly managed oil-analysis program where permitted.
What this ranking does not prove
API certification is a minimum performance category, not a laboratory ranking of brands. Caterpillar notes that different CK-4 oils are not necessarily identical. Base oils, additive chemistry, viscosity, OEM approvals, testing, price, and availability can all differ.
Likewise, the most expensive container is not automatically the most protective. The best oil is the one that satisfies the engine’s requirements and is changed at the correct interval under the actual operating conditions.
What is changing next?
Shell describes a PC-12 heavy-duty diesel-oil category rollout planned for 2027. Until API officially lists a successor as current, buyers should not treat PC-12 as an already active replacement for CK-4. Check the latest API and engine-manufacturer information when purchasing oil after a specification change.
FAQ
What is the best overall diesel oil brand?
Shell Rotella is the best overall general-purpose pick in this editorial ranking because it combines broad availability, several formulations, multiple viscosity grades, and substantial OEM-specification coverage. The best oil for a particular engine may be another brand if it has the required approval.
Is FA-4 oil better than CK-4 oil?
Neither category is universally better. FA-4 is designed for selected lower-viscosity applications and is not backward-compatible with CK-4. Use FA-4 only when the engine manufacturer specifically permits it.
Is synthetic diesel oil worth the extra cost?
It can offer advantages during very cold starts, high-temperature operation, or demanding service, but the correct specification and viscosity matter more than the synthetic label. Synthetic oil by itself does not authorize longer drain intervals.
Can any 15W-40 diesel oil be used in a truck?
No. SAE 15W-40 describes viscosity, not the complete performance package. The oil must also meet the engine’s required API category and OEM specifications, such as Cummins CES 20086, Volvo VDS-4.5, or another manufacturer requirement.
