The 10 most expensive Porsches sold at public auction
Rank and prices follow Modern Car Collector’s reported list through its 2026 Monterey Car Week cutoff. The 1956 550 RS Spyder’s original result is shown in pounds, with the ranking source’s approximate contemporaneous dollar conversion beside it. These are individual auction outcomes, not estimates of typical market values.

Why these Porsches brought such high prices
There is no single feature that explains the ranking. It spans purpose-built race cars and road-going supercars, and each result reflects a particular car, sale and moment. Documented competition history, a specific chassis, significant events or cultural associations, rarity, preservation, mileage, factory specification and provenance can all matter to buyers—but the available results do not prove that any one attribute caused a particular price.

#1 Best Overall
- Die-cast metal body with plastic parts
- Opening doors and engine compartment
- Detailed chassis
- Package Dimensions: 10.6 L x 23.5 H x 11.5 W (centimeters)
The top car illustrates how these details can converge. Porsche Newsroom identifies 917-024 with the film Le Mans and describes the 917 as Porsche’s first overall Le Mans winner, in 1970. Gooding & Company president David Gooding said in an October 2017 release: “We continue to see strong demand for cars that combine all the attributes of rarity, performance, historical significance and provenance.” That is the auction house’s description of market demand, not a formula for valuing every Porsche.

How to read the ranking
- These are auction results, not every Porsche sale. The ranking excludes private transactions, which are not publicly captured here. A failed reserve bid is not a completed sale.
- Prices include buyer’s premium. Modern Car Collector says its listed prices use that basis; Broad Arrow also specifies buyer’s premium for its 2026 motor-car lots. Broad Arrow notes that its overall March 2026 results include select transactions completed immediately after the auction closed.
- Currency matters. The 550 RS Spyder result is recorded in pounds, with an approximate dollar conversion at the time supplied by the ranking source. It should not be read as a present-day conversion.
- The date matters. This is a time-bounded ranking through the 2026 Monterey Car Week cutoff. A later major auction result could change the order.
- “Record” needs a category and date. Gooding reported that the 2017 917K surpassed the previous Porsche auction record, the 1982 956’s $10.12 million result in 2015. Gooding independently reported the 1998 911 GT1’s sale as a 911 record at the time, while Broad Arrow described the 2026 Carrera GT result as a model record.
Sources and sale confirmations
- Modern Car Collector’s reported ranking supplies the list order, auction details and scope through the 2026 Monterey Car Week cutoff.
- Gooding & Company’s 2017 Pebble Beach release confirms the 917K’s $14.08 million result, identifies it as chassis 917-024 and notes that it displaced the prior record.
- Porsche Newsroom’s historical feature discusses the 917 and its connection to Le Mans. Porsche labels that feature a historical snapshot that may be outdated, so it is not used here as the current ranking.
- Broad Arrow’s March 2026 Amelia Island results confirms the Carrera GT sale and explains its buyer’s-premium convention.
- RM Sotheby’s 1989 Porsche 959 Sport listing reports the Monterey 2026 sale at $7.045 million and identifies the car.
