The most expensive car registration in the current cited record is Dubai’s P-7, which sold for AED 55 million (US$14.97 million) in 2023. But the available records do not support a reliable global top ten: they mix countries, currencies, auction formats and fee conventions. Here are the verified headline sales, with the limits of each comparison made clear.
What is the most expensive license plate?
Guinness World Records identifies Dubai registration P-7 as the most expensive car registration. It sold for AED 55 million (US$14.97 million) at an Emirates Auction charity auction in Dubai on 8 April 2023. Emirates Auction also reported the AED 55 million sale and described the event as its Most Noble Numbers charity auction.
This is a documented record, not proof of a definitive worldwide ranking of the ten highest prices. Public records do not capture every private transaction, and reported totals may include different fees or taxes.
Notable verified sales by market
Dubai: P-7 set the cited record
The AED 55 million result for P-7 is the headline sale. Guinness reports the equivalent as US$14.97 million; Emirates Auction’s announcement rounded it to about US$15 million. The auction was held to raise money for charity. The Guinness record entry does not name a beneficiary.

Abu Dhabi: an earlier low-digit record, with a reporting discrepancy
Abu Dhabi Police reported that plate 1 sold for AED 52.2 million on 17 February 2008. The force said proceeds from that sale and other low-digit plates would go toward building a hospital for traffic-accident victims. Its announcement also reported an earlier AED 25 million sale of plate 5.
There is a discrepancy in how the earlier UAE record is described. Abu Dhabi Police identifies the AED 52.2 million lot as plate 1; Emirates Auction’s 2023 retrospective calls its previous record plate “5 – 1” and says it sold for US$14 million in 2008. Those descriptions should not be treated as interchangeable without further evidence.

Dubai: later auction results show other high-value formats
Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority reported about AED 100 million in total proceeds from its exclusive vehicle-plate auction on 26 April 2025. The leading lots were CC 22 at AED 8.35 million, BB 20 at AED 7.52 million and BB 19 at AED 6.68 million. These are notable auction results, but they are far below the P-7 record.
United Kingdom: public-sale figures use a different convention
NumberPlates.org’s 2026 compilation lists 1 F as the top publicly recorded UK sale for 2025 at £926,000, including fees and applicable VAT. Its sales explorer gives the hammer price separately as £800,000. The same compilation lists KS 1 at £285,000 as the top publicly recorded UK sale for 2024.

These are figures from a secondary sales database, not an official global record. Its compilation says prices include auction fees and VAT where applicable and excludes many private transactions because their prices are undisclosed.
A dated UK government record
A UK Government release published in 2013 said registration 1 D had sold for £352,411 in 2009 and described it at the time as the DVLA’s most expensive number-plate sale. That is a historical claim, not a current UK record.

Why there is no defensible top-ten ranking here
A true ranking would need ten documented transactions compared on the same basis. The available examples span UAE dirham auction totals, UK pound prices, hammer prices and amounts that include buyer charges or tax. Some are official records or government announcements; others come from auction-house reports or a secondary database. They also cover different plate formats and markets.
- Geography: a global record is not the same as a UAE or UK auction ranking.
- Transaction type: public auction results can be checked; private sales and asking prices may not be disclosed or may not represent completed sales.
- Price convention: a hammer price, an amount including fees and tax, and an auction total are not automatically comparable.
- Currency and date: the sale price should be reported in its original currency and tied to its sale date; currency conversions require a stated method.
- Evidence: a Guinness record entry, government release, auction-house announcement and secondary database each document a different kind of claim.
For those reasons, the records below are best read as notable documented sales, not as places two through ten in a ranked list. The sources establish high prices for short or distinctive registrations, but they do not establish why individual bidders valued a particular plate or prove a market-wide cause for the prices.

Tesla owners need to purchase Tesla specific screws. Simply slot your plate into the silicone license plate frame and align the plate with the four holes on the frame. Screw the license plate on your car with the hex nuts first, screws second and screw caps finally.
- FASHIONABLE DESIGN & HUMANIZED DETAILS: This silicone license plate frame has 4 reinforced round corners, looking great on your vehicle while averting damages caused by traditional sharp-cornered frames. In addition, along with the 2 drain holes on the bottom, the upgraded vents on the upper left corner and lower right corner keep your license plate away from water accumulation and rust.
How to read the charity claims
The charity context is specific to the sales that identify it. Guinness and Emirates Auction describe the 2023 P-7 auction as a charity event. Abu Dhabi Police said proceeds from its 2008 plate 1 sale and other low-digit plates were intended for a hospital serving traffic-accident victims. These reports do not establish that every expensive registration sale is charitable.
