RM Sotheby’s reported a sold price of £1,805,000 for the 1985 Audi Sport quattro S1 E2 known as RE10 at its London auction in 2022. The auction listing gives the final sold figure but does not separately state the hammer price or explain fee treatment. The result is the highest documented Audi sale in the auction records cited here; it should not be treated as a verified global record.
RE10 is identified by chassis number WAUZZZ85ZGA905010 and Audi Sport internal number RE10. RM Sotheby’s says Hannu Mikkola and Arnie Hertz campaigned it at the 1985 Lombard RAC Rally, where it led before an engine problem forced its retirement. Why the top sale was a rally car
Scarcity and competition history
The S1 E2 was a purpose-built Group B competition car, distinct from the road-going Sport quattro. RM Sotheby’s 2022 catalog states that 20 were built, 15 are believed to survive, and four were in private hands when the lot was catalogued. The surviving-car figure is the auction house’s estimate, not a definitive census.

RE10’s appeal rests on the combination of scarcity and a traceable works-rally history, as well as its later test and training use. Those features help explain why its result sits in a different category from prices achieved by road cars, but the sales listed here do not establish that any single provenance detail guarantees a particular value.
A different S1 E2, a different history
The S1 E2 sold in Monaco in 2024 was not RE10. RM Sotheby’s catalog says the car was entered in the 1986 Rallye de Portugal by Walter Röhrl and later appeared in the 1989 and 1990 Race of Champions; it also discusses restoration prospects. How to compare the prices fairly
- Keep currencies separate. The cited results include pounds, dollars, and euros. Comparing their converted values requires an exchange-rate source and a chosen date; no such conversion is made here.
- Separate road cars from competition cars. A road-going Sport quattro and a works-history S1 E2 differ in purpose, specification, and provenance.
- Check that the lot actually sold. An estimate or an unsold lot is not a completed sale. RM Sotheby’s 2024 Monaco Audi V8 quattro DTM, for example, was offered with an estimate but did not sell, so it is not a sold-price comparator. See the Audi V8 quattro DTM lot record.
- Read the lot description for condition and history. Restoration, preservation, modifications, included equipment, and documented competition use vary across the examples and can make headline figures poor like-for-like comparisons.
What the 2026 Audi prototype sale does—and does not—show
RM Sotheby’s reported a $280,000 sale for a 1986 Audi 5000 CS Quattro speed-record development prototype at Monterey in 2026. The auction house explicitly says the car participated in the program but was not the actual record-setting car. It is a notable Audi result, but the caveat matters when describing the car’s history.
