There is no fair, verified all-time ranking of the “most expensive crashes” among these events: official records measure different things, from repairs and lost revenue to asset value and disaster losses. The cases below show what the records do establish—and why “crazy” is best understood as unusual circumstances, not a cost category.
Why these costs cannot be ranked at face value
A repair bill is not the same as lost business, the value of destroyed equipment, or the wider economic and human impact of a disaster. The table preserves each source’s own measure rather than presenting unlike figures as a leaderboard. No common inflation-adjusted year is established for the historical amounts shown.
For comparison, the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration’s 2025 methodology combines economic costs with a societal-impact component for its estimates of commercial motor vehicle crashes, and reports those tabulated values in 2023 dollars. That method applies to a specific crash population; it is not a universal conversion tool for the events below.
What the official records report
| Event and date | Reported amount and cost basis | Fatalities and injuries | Primary record and qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tenerife airport collision, 1977 | No cost figure stated by the FAA account cited here. | 583 fatalities; injury figure not stated in that account. | Federal Aviation Administration (FAA); no cost estimate or price year stated. |
| Titan submersible implosion, 2023 | C$5.6 million, about US$4.2 million, for the submersible and launch/recovery equipment together. This is declared asset value, not total accident cost. | Five fatalities; no injury figure stated. | National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) investigation record, citing a 2023 customs declaration; declaration value, not an accident-loss estimate. |
| RMS Queen Elizabeth 2 grounding, 1992 | About US$13.2 million in temporary and permanent repairs; estimated US$50 million in lost revenue until return to service. | No deaths or injuries. | NTSB investigation record; the source does not state a common price year for these estimates. |
| Sunshine Skyway Bridge disaster, 1980 | No reliable incident cost figure stated in the NTSB record cited here. | Fatality and injury totals not stated in the record summary used here. | NTSB investigation; no cost estimate or price year stated. |
| Amtrak 501 derailment, 2017 | Estimated damage above US$25.8 million. | Three passenger fatalities; 57 passengers and crew injured, plus eight people in highway vehicles. | NTSB investigation record; the source does not state a price year for the damage estimate. |
| Joplin tornado, 2011 (broad-scope comparison) | Losses approaching US$3 billion. | 161 fatalities and more than 1,000 injuries. | National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST); its summary calls it the costliest U.S. tornado on record, but does not state a price year for the losses. |
What made these events unusual
Tenerife: a takeoff clearance failure with multiple contributing pressures
The FAA’s account describes the collision of KLM and Pan Am Boeing 747s at Tenerife. It identifies the KLM captain’s unauthorized takeoff and failure to interrupt it after learning that the Pan Am aircraft was still on the runway as the fundamental cause in the Spanish investigation. The account also discusses duty-time pressures, so the event should not be reduced to a single-factor explanation.

Titan: a deep-sea pressure-hull failure
The NTSB found that the submersible’s pressure hull failed during the dive to the Titanic wreck on June 18, 2023. Its investigation identified an inadequate engineering process, anomalies in the composite pressure vessel, inadequate testing, and flawed analysis of monitoring data. The asset declaration in the table describes equipment value only; it does not capture the full economic or societal consequences.
Queen Elizabeth 2: a grounding with both repair and interruption costs
The NTSB investigation says the ship grounded in Vineyard Sound, Massachusetts, on August 7, 1992. It identifies the absence of an agreed navigation plan and a loss of situational awareness after a course change as central factors. The separate repair and revenue figures in the table illustrate why the label attached to a cost matters.
Rank #2
- UPGRADED 4K UHD CLARITY - Experience stunning detail with the front camera's upgrade to 4K UHD (2160p) resolution, paired with a 1080p rear camera. The extra-large 12" display provides 1.5 times the viewing area of a standard mirror, significantly reducing blind spots for enhanced safety.

- LARGER SCREEN & WIDER VIEW - The WOLFBOX G840S mirror camera features a 170° front lens and a 140° rear lens, offering a broader field of view to minimize blind spots during driving and reversing. The smart split-screen function allows simultaneous monitoring of both lenses, while the 2.5D curved screen seamlessly integrates with your vehicle’s interior.
- SUPERIOR NIGHT VISION & IMAGE QUALITY - The G840S mirror dash camera is equipped with an upgraded low-reflectivity LCD to reduce daytime reflections. With incorporated WDR & HDR technology for balanced lighting, and a professional-grade sensor paired with a 6-glass lens for superior image quality, nighttime driving or challenging lighting conditions are handled with ease.
- 24-HOUR PARKING MONITOR - Beyond on-the-road safety with loop recording, the WOLFBOX camera also features a 24-hour parking monitor. Time-lapse mode records at a low frame rate to conserve power and storage while ensuring continuous surveillance of your vehicle. (A hardwire kit is required for parking monitoring.)
Sunshine Skyway: a vessel struck a bridge during severe weather
The NTSB describes the Summit Venture’s encounter with severe weather and the pilot’s failure to abandon the transit after visual and radar references were lost. The investigation also notes that bridge-pier protection and a motorist warning system could have reduced damage or loss of life. The source supports those safety findings, but not a cost ranking.
Amtrak 501: passenger railcars came down onto Interstate 5
The derailment sent passenger railcars onto the highway, where they struck vehicles. The NTSB cites failure to mitigate a hazardous curve without positive train control, inadequate training on the territory and equipment, and other contributing safety decisions.

Joplin: a disaster-scale comparison, not a vehicle crash
The 2011 tornado belongs here only under a deliberately broad interpretation of “crashes” as catastrophic events. NIST describes it as the costliest U.S. tornado on record; it is not a vehicle collision, so its disaster-loss figure should not be compared directly with vehicle damage, repairs, or declared equipment value.

How to read a “most expensive” claim
- Check what the amount covers. Repairs, property damage, business interruption, declared asset value, and wider societal impact answer different questions.
- Check the price year. A historical dollar amount without an explicit price year cannot be compared precisely with a current-dollar estimate.
- Keep human consequences visible but distinct. Deaths and injuries matter to understanding an event, but they are not interchangeable with a repair bill or an asset valuation.
- Require a documented figure before ranking. Where the cited official record does not establish a cost, a ranking should not fill the gap with an unsupported estimate.
