KTM announced it as part of a new 390 Adventure lineup on January 30, 2025. That makes it a 2025 announcement, not a bike still coming in 2026; and the “most exciting” label is a judgment, not the result of an independent comparison.
Why the KTM 390 Adventure R stands out
KTM’s January 30, 2025 announcement introduced a new 390 Adventure lineup that includes the R and X. The company described the range as built for long-distance travel across varied terrain, highlighting an updated LC4c powerplant, adventure-ready suspension and wheel-and-tire packages. It positioned the R as the more off-road-oriented version.
That combination gives the R a clear angle in a crowded category: a new entry in a small-capacity adventure range, with the R differentiated for riders who expect to spend more time off pavement. The announcement supports that positioning, but it does not establish how the bike performs on the road or trail. No independent road test or measured comparison is available here, so claims about handling, comfort, speed or superiority would be premature.
Other notable 2025 adventure-bike announcements
“Adventure bike” covered several different kinds of motorcycles in 2025. These announcements are useful context, but they are not all direct alternatives to the KTM 390 Adventure R.

Which 2025 announcement fits your riding?
For a smaller bike with an off-road emphasis
The KTM 390 Adventure R is the strongest fit among these announcements if your interest is a new, small-capacity adventure model that its manufacturer specifically distinguishes for more off-road-oriented use. That is a description of its intended position, not proof that it is the best choice for a particular rider.
For a larger adventure motorcycle
The Honda Transalp and BMW R 1300 GS Adventure represent larger-machine options in the U.S. announcements. Honda highlighted comfort and convenience updates for the Transalp, while BMW’s update concerns a 1,300 cc boxer-powered model. Their scale and stated focus make them a different comparison from the KTM 390.

For a different take on the ADV category
Honda presented the NC750X as a distinct approach within the segment, while the India-only X-ADV combines adventure styling and intent with maxi-scooter practicality. Neither should be treated as a direct substitute for a dirt-oriented motorcycle without considering how and where you ride.
Should you wait for the KTM 390 Adventure R?
The answer depends on whether the R’s off-road emphasis matches your needs and whether it is available in your market. Since its 2025 announcement, “wait for it” is no longer a universally timely recommendation. Check with local KTM dealers for the model year offered, current stock, price and delivery timing; the announcement does not establish present availability or a global price.

Before choosing among these bikes, compare the factors that matter for your own routes and budget:
- Riding mix: How much of your riding is pavement, gravel, dirt roads or more demanding trails?
- Size and manageability: Compare the actual motorcycles in person and consider whether their scale suits your experience and typical use.
- Touring needs: Assess comfort, luggage plans and the features you need for longer trips.
- Ownership locally: Confirm the price, model year, dealer support and parts availability in your country.
What the 2025 announcement does—and does not—tell you
KTM’s release establishes that the company announced the 390 Adventure R and X within its 2025 lineup and describes the R’s intended off-road positioning. It is manufacturer information, not an independent riding evaluation. The Honda and BMW releases likewise describe their own models and markets; they do not provide a common test or measurement that ranks these motorcycles against one another.

A separate KTM production update dated September 11, 2025 said that specified new-generation Street and Adventure models would shift from model year 2025 to 2026. That update concerns the models named in it; it should not be taken as evidence of a timing change for the 390 Adventure R.
Predictions about the TVS Apache RTX 300 circulated in a non-official February 2025 article, but the claims identified here were not confirmed by the official sources cited above. They are not a reliable basis for comparing confirmed 2025 announcements.
