Start with the kind of work you need the truck to do, then compare EPA combined MPG for the exact engine, transmission, drivetrain and model year. Compact hybrids are a strong economy benchmark; midsize and larger trucks require closer configuration-by-configuration checks.
Which used trucks are worth checking for fuel economy?
The Ford Maverick hybrid is a useful compact-pickup benchmark. An Edmunds comparison republished by the Associated Press in 2025 reports 38 mpg combined for the hybrid, compared with 23–25 mpg combined for the turbo Maverick. The same comparison reports up to 25 mpg combined (22 city/30 highway) for the non-hybrid Hyundai Santa Cruz, with AWD lowering its estimates by 1 mpg, and 21–22 mpg combined for the turbo Santa Cruz. These figures illustrate how powertrain and drivetrain can change the result; they are not ratings for every model year or configuration. See the AP/Edmunds comparison.

For midsize pickups, nameplate alone is not enough. Toyota’s 2023 Tacoma-versus-Colorado comparison lists cited Tacoma configurations at 19–21 mpg combined and cited Chevrolet Colorado 2.7L configurations at 21–22 mpg combined. Those are manufacturer-presented EPA estimates for the configurations in that comparison, not a ranking across model years or trims. Review Toyota’s 2023 comparison.
These examples do not establish an overall winner across compact, midsize and full-size used trucks. To identify one, define a model-year and configuration scope, then compare the exact EPA entries for those vehicles.

How to compare EPA fuel-economy ratings fairly
Use EPA combined MPG as the common comparison point, and check city and highway ratings when your driving pattern makes them relevant. EPA explains that test data comes from testing at its National Vehicle and Fuel Emissions Laboratory and from manufacturer-submitted tests; EPA can require manufacturers to update window-sticker MPG values when estimates prove too high. EPA describes its fuel-economy test data.
- Set the job and size first. Decide whether you need a compact, midsize or full-size truck, and whether it will mainly commute, haul or tow. A more economical truck that cannot handle the intended task is not a useful comparison.
- Match the configuration. Check model year, engine or hybrid system, transmission, two- or four-wheel drive, and cab and bed configuration. The fuel-economy label or EPA vehicle listing should match the actual used truck, not just its model name.
- Compare the same metric. Use EPA combined MPG across candidates. Keep city and highway figures alongside it if they help assess your likely driving mix; do not compare one vehicle’s combined figure with another’s highway figure.
- Check the individual vehicle. An EPA rating is an estimate for a specified configuration, not a promise about a particular used truck. Its condition and maintenance history matter, and the cited sources do not quantify how much those factors change real-world MPG.
EPA’s Automotive Trends data tool covers model years 1975–2025. In its 2025 report, EPA says 1975–2024 data are final and 2025 values are preliminary. The agency also distinguishes compliance fuel-economy metrics from estimated real-world fuel economy, so use figures intended for the same kind of comparison. Explore EPA’s Automotive Trends data.

Do diesel used trucks get better MPG than gasoline trucks?
Do not assume so from the fuel type alone. The cited Edmunds selection of used trucks says Chevrolet offered the Colorado with a diesel beginning in 2016 and notes towing capacity up to 7,700 pounds, but it does not provide the diesel’s MPG. That information is not enough to establish an efficiency advantage. Find the EPA entry for the exact diesel model year and configuration, and compare it with a gasoline truck that meets the same capability needs. Read the AP/Edmunds used-truck selection.

What to take away when shopping
- Use compact hybrids such as the Maverick hybrid as an economy benchmark, not as an automatic recommendation for every truck buyer.
- Expect substantial differences between engine and drivetrain options within a nameplate; verify the specific vehicle rather than relying on a model-wide figure.
- Check that the pickup’s towing and hauling ability fits your needs before treating MPG as the deciding factor.
- Make the final comparison using exact EPA ratings for the model years and configurations you are considering, then assess the used vehicle’s condition separately.
