What is the most common problem with Honda hybrid vehicles? The official U.S. recall notices covered here do not provide comparative failure rates, so they cannot establish one fault as the most common across Honda’s hybrid lineup. They do document several distinct, model-specific safety campaigns. The practical first step is to check your vehicle’s VIN, then follow the remedy for any open recall.
What the recall notices do—and do not—show
A recall identifies a safety-related defect or compliance issue in a defined group of vehicles. It does not show how often a problem occurs across every Honda hybrid, and it cannot by itself rank faults by frequency. The campaigns below involve different models, years, components, and remedies; none supports the conclusion that all Honda hybrids share a battery, fuel-pump, or software problem.
The notices are U.S.-focused examples, not a comprehensive reliability survey of every Honda hybrid, model year, or market. A vehicle’s inclusion depends on its VIN and the scope of the specific campaign.
Documented Honda hybrid recall examples
| Campaign | Affected vehicles described in the notice | Issue and possible consequence | Remedy or campaign detail |
|---|---|---|---|
| High-voltage battery | Specified 2023 CR-V Hybrid vehicles | Honda said the negative terminal or busbar inside the high-voltage lithium-ion battery could break because it was too thin due to the manufacturing process. | Honda’s notice says the battery will be replaced free of charge. A dealer communication dated October 4, 2024, identified a campaign population of 98 vehicles; that is not a count of failures or a rate across Honda hybrids. | Fuel pump | Specified model years of Accord Hybrid, CR-V Hybrid, and Insight, among other Honda vehicles | An improperly molded impeller could deform and make the pump inoperable. Honda warned that this could prevent the engine from starting, cause loss of drive power, or lead to a stall while driving. | Check the VIN for inclusion and contact a Honda dealer for the campaign remedy. The notice describes the potential defect and consequences, not a frequency ranking. Honda’s owner notice |
| Software programming | Certain 2023–2025 Accord Hybrid vehicles | Honda listed a software-programming issue in a November 2025 recall campaign. This is a separate campaign and does not establish software as the most common hybrid problem. | The approximate campaign population listed by Honda was 256,000 vehicles. This is the number of vehicles in the campaign, not the number confirmed to have experienced a failure. Check the VIN for the remedy that applies. Honda’s recall report |
How to check whether your Honda hybrid is affected
- Find the 17-character VIN on the vehicle and registration documents. Use the VIN lookup on NHTSA’s recalls page or Honda’s recall lookup.
- Review any open recall listed for that exact VIN. A search by make, model, or year can identify campaigns to investigate, but it cannot confirm whether an individual vehicle is included.
- Contact an authorized Honda dealer to confirm the campaign and arrange the recall remedy. Recall repairs are handled through the manufacturer’s campaign process; ask the dealer what applies to your vehicle.
- If the vehicle has symptoms, request diagnosis for that specific vehicle rather than assuming the cause is a hybrid battery, fuel pump, or software issue. A recall notice is not a diagnosis of an individual car.
How to interpret complaints and safety reports
Owner complaints can help regulators identify potential safety issues, but they are not automatically verified defects or a measure of how prevalent a fault is. NHTSA says there is “no set number” of complaints required to open an investigation; the agency considers each complaint alongside other information. NHTSA also makes complaints searchable and accepts safety complaints through its safety problem reporting page. A complaint alone does not prove a defect or show that a problem is the most common one.
