For a luxury sedan with exceptional stated range, consider the Lucid Air; for a family that needs comfortable seating across three rows, compare the Kia EV9 and Hyundai IONIQ 9. The Hyundai IONIQ 5 and Tesla Model Y also have useful independent comfort and charging comparisons, but the published comparison covers different model years. No common test establishes one objectively most comfortable EV, so treat these as candidates to try in the exact trim you plan to buy.
Which 2026 EVs are worth considering for a long road trip?
These models stand out for different reasons. The range figures below are U.S. EPA estimates unless otherwise labeled; they are not a measure of comfort, and the trim matters. Charging figures describe different kinds of evidence: manufacturer capabilities or estimates are not the same as results from an independent test.
| EV and model year | Road-trip comfort case | Published range and charging evidence |
|---|---|---|
| Lucid Air, 2026 | Luxury-sedan option. Lucid lists heated front seats for Air Pure, with optional 20-way heated and ventilated seats with massage. The available evidence does not establish an independent head-to-head comfort rating against the SUVs here. | Lucid estimates up to 512 miles for Air Grand Touring and 431 miles for Air Touring. Lucid says Touring can charge at up to 250 kW. |
| Kia EV9, 2026 | Strongest sourced case for family trips: Cars.com praised the EV9’s all-row comfort and passenger space, drawing in part on its long-term EV9 Land use. Passenger relaxation seats with a power legrest are available, according to Kia. | Kia estimates 305 miles for Light Long Range RWD and 283 miles for Wind AWD. The 2026 EV9 has a NACS charging port, according to Cars.com and Kia. |
| Hyundai IONIQ 9, 2026 | Three-row option with a manufacturer-described comfort-oriented chassis. Hyundai says its tuning balances body control, secure handling, and comfort; that is a maker claim, not an independent comparative finding. | Hyundai estimates 335 miles for S RWD, 320 miles for SE and SEL AWD, and 311 miles for specified Limited and Calligraphy trims. Hyundai estimates about 24 minutes from 10% to 80% on a 350-kW, 800V DC charger using the included CCS adapter. |
| Tesla Model Y Long Range AWD, 2026 | In an Edmunds comparison published by the Associated Press, the Model Y and the 2025 IONIQ 5 were both described as spacious and comfortable, with smooth rides. The comparison reported more maximum cargo space in the Model Y. | Edmunds reported 327 EPA-estimated miles and matched that estimate in its standardized range test. In the comparison, a high-powered charger added up to 169 miles in 15 minutes; that is a test/article result, not a guarantee for every stop. |
| Hyundai IONIQ 5, 2026 | Consumer Reports’ 2026 road-test excerpt describes a reasonably comfortable ride and front seats that most testers found plush and supportive; some testers thought the seatback was too narrow. It suggests the SEL’s smaller wheels may favor ride comfort and range over the Limited’s larger wheels. | The independent Edmunds comparison covered a 2025 IONIQ 5, not a 2026 model. In that comparison, a high-powered charger added up to 178 miles in 15 minutes; do not treat this as a 2026-versus-2026 result. |
Cars.com named the 2026 Kia EV9 its Best Electric Vehicle for 2026, citing range, charging, packaging, ride comfort, and passenger space. That award supports the EV9 as a family candidate; it is not a statistical comfort score or a ranking against every EV.
Which one fits your passengers and trip?
Choose the Lucid Air if range and front-seat adjustment are priorities
The Air’s published range estimates make it the range-forward sedan in this shortlist. For the 2026 Air Pure, Lucid says the Mojave PurLuxe interior includes 12-way heated power front seats, with optional 20-way heated and ventilated seats with massage. Those features may suit a driver who values adjustability and ventilation, but seat comfort is personal: check whether the cushion, bolsters, and head restraint work for your body. Lucid also announced Tesla Supercharger access for Air; confirm current access and route compatibility before relying on it for a specific trip.

Choose the Kia EV9 if you need three rows in regular use
The EV9 has the most directly supported all-row comfort case in the available comparisons. Cars.com’s long-term Land experience informed its comments on row comfort, materials, storage flexibility, and user-friendly infotainment. Kia also lists available relaxation seating with a power legrest. Since availability depends on equipment and trim, test the seating configuration you would actually buy, including access to the third row with your usual passengers aboard.
Kia’s estimates differ by trim: the Light Long Range RWD is rated at 305 miles, while Wind AWD is rated at 283 miles. Kia also describes an available heat pump and battery warmer for cold-weather use. Check the specific vehicle’s equipment rather than assuming every EV9 has those features.

Consider the Hyundai IONIQ 9 for three rows and a short stated charging stop
Hyundai’s 2026 trim estimates range from 311 to 335 miles in the listed configurations. Its approximately 24-minute 10%–80% figure is conditioned on using a 350-kW, 800V DC charger and the included CCS adapter; actual charging time depends on conditions and charger availability. The IONIQ 9 has a built-in NACS port for Tesla Supercharger use, according to Hyundai. The CCS adapter and built-in NACS port serve different charging connections, so do not confuse the adapter for CCS equipment with Supercharger access.
Compare the IONIQ 5 and Model Y in person, not as a same-year test
The AP-published Edmunds comparison paired a 2025 IONIQ 5 with a 2026 Model Y. Edmunds characterized both as spacious and comfortable with smooth rides, favored the IONIQ 5 overall for ease of use, and reported that the Model Y offered more maximum cargo space. Its reported cargo figures were 29 cubic feet behind the Model Y’s rear seat and 71.4 cubic feet with it folded, versus 26.3 and 58.5 cubic feet for the IONIQ 5. Those figures belong to that comparison; they do not establish a direct 2026-versus-2026 result.

- Fit J1772 Connector: Designed to securely hold standard J1772 charging connectors, keeping them stable, properly positioned, and protected when not in use.
- Heavy-Duty Construction: Made from solid stainless steel for strong load-bearing support, rust resistance, and long-lasting durability.
- Cable Protection: The integrated hook design supports and organizes the charging cable, preventing tangles and reducing bending or strain over time.
- Keep Garage Tidy: Provides a dedicated storage solution for your EV charger, keeping the plug and cable off the floor while maintaining a clean and organized charging area.
- Easy Installation: Comes with all necessary mounting screws for quick and secure wall installation, suitable for garage walls, studs, or other solid surfaces.
- Try the seats for fit. Adjust the seat, steering wheel, and head restraint, then check thigh support, lumbar placement, shoulder room, bolster pressure, and ease of entry. If a seat offers ventilation, heat, or massage, test its controls rather than assuming the feature suits you.
- Ride in every row you will use. Put regular passengers in their usual seats, especially in the EV9 or IONIQ 9. Check third-row access, legroom, headroom, and whether passengers can stay comfortable with the front seats in your normal positions.
- Drive on representative roads. Include rough pavement and highway speed if possible. Notice impacts, tire and wind noise, seat movement, and how easily you can hold a relaxed driving position. The evidence here does not provide one common independent comfort score across all candidates.
- Match the range to the exact trim. Verify the drivetrain and wheel configuration on the vehicle’s window sticker. An estimate for one trim should not be applied to another.
- Plan charging on your actual routes. Check compatible fast chargers, access requirements, and current network availability at the stops you expect to use. Peak charging capability or a manufacturer’s time estimate does not guarantee a particular stop duration.
- Check cargo with passengers aboard. Load the luggage you normally bring while keeping all required seats in use. Maximum cargo capacity with seats folded is not the same as usable space on a family trip.
How to read the range and charging claims
Lucid, Kia, and Hyundai’s listed mileages are manufacturer-published U.S. EPA estimates for named trims. Edmunds’ 327-mile Model Y result is an EPA estimate that Edmunds says it matched on its standardized range test. Neither a rating nor a single test result predicts the exact range on every trip.
Charging numbers need the same care. The IONIQ 9’s roughly 24-minute estimate specifies a charge window, charger power and architecture, and the included adapter. Edmunds’ IONIQ 5 and Model Y miles-added figures came from a high-powered charger in a comparison, and charging speed varies with conditions and the station. For the Lucid Air Touring, 250 kW is a manufacturer-stated peak capability, not a promise that a charging session will stay at that rate.
Does the 2027 Mercedes-Benz EQS belong in this comparison?
Mercedes-Benz announced a refreshed 2027 EQS with a 925-km WLTP range figure, up to 350-kW DC charging, and as much as 320 km of WLTP range added in ten minutes. These are manufacturer claims using the European WLTP cycle, not U.S. EPA estimates; they should not be ranked numerically alongside the mileages above as though they used the same standard. Mercedes-Benz said the refreshed car would reach U.S. dealerships in the second half of 2026. Because timing and local availability can vary, confirm that a 2027 EQS is actually orderable or available where you shop.
