There is no defensible single answer to which family SUV is the most or least economical without first defining “family SUV” and comparing the same model year, exact trim and drivetrain. EPA class ranges and fleet averages do not identify individual winners or losers, and gasoline MPG cannot be directly merged with electric MPGe.
Which family SUV gets the best gas mileage?
The available figures do not establish a current model-level winner or loser. “Family SUV” is not a single EPA comparison class: it might mean any SUV used by a family, a three-row SUV, or a vehicle that meets a particular seating or cargo requirement. The answer also changes depending on whether electric vehicles (EVs) and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) are included.
A fair ranking needs a defined group of vehicles and EPA combined ratings for the same model year, with each exact trim and drivetrain identified. Without that vehicle-by-vehicle comparison, naming a most- or least-economical family SUV would overstate what the published class and fleet figures show.
Why EPA class ranges do not reveal the best or worst family SUV
EPA’s published estimated ranges for model year 2026 are 14–125 combined MPG for small SUVs and 13–115 combined MPG for standard SUVs. These are class ranges, not a ranking of family-sized models. They do not establish which three-row SUV is at either end, and the breadth of each range makes it especially important not to treat it as a family-SUV-specific result.

The EPA points shoppers to fueleconomy.gov for vehicle comparisons. Its estimates draw on testing at the National Vehicle and Fuel Emissions Laboratory and data submitted by manufacturers. Manufacturers must update label MPG values when evidence shows the values are too high. For a shopper, that makes the EPA label a consistent published baseline—not a substitute for matching model year, trim and drivetrain.
What the recent SUV averages mean
The EPA’s 2025 Automotive Trends Report, published in 2026, reports a 2024 fleet-level average of 39.2 MPG for car SUVs. Excluding battery-electric and plug-in-hybrid vehicles, the reported average is 30.2 MPG. Both figures describe category aggregates, not the EPA rating of any individual family SUV.

The report’s data page covers model years 1975–2025 and labels 2025 values preliminary. Its detailed-data listing includes a model-year 2024 fuel-economy file released March 10, 2026. These details provide context on the available reporting, but they do not supply a current ranking of defined family-SUV models.
How to compare family SUVs fairly
Three rows are one reasonable boundary for a family-SUV comparison, but they are an editorial choice rather than an EPA-wide definition. Once the vehicle set is defined, compare like with like:

- Model year: Use one named year rather than combining ratings from different years.
- Trim and drivetrain: Identify the exact version, including whether it is front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive; ratings can differ within a model lineup.
- Seating: Confirm that each vehicle meets the chosen family-SUV rule, such as having three rows.
- Powertrain: State whether the comparison includes gasoline vehicles, PHEVs and EVs.
- Rating measure: Use EPA combined MPG for gasoline vehicles. If EVs or PHEVs are included, report applicable MPGe separately and explain the difference rather than treating it as gasoline MPG.
These boundaries matter because a combined list can answer different questions: best gasoline fuel economy, best electric efficiency, or best efficiency across a mixed group of powertrains. A single unlabeled number cannot answer all three.

The lowest-rated vehicle in one group may not be the least economical in another. Adding or excluding three-row models, particular drivetrains, PHEVs or EVs changes the comparison set. A valid “least economical” result therefore needs the same declared rules as a “most economical” result, plus the EPA rating for each included vehicle.

A CARFAX result titled “3 Row SUVs With the Best Gas Mileage in 2026” reflects the kind of three-row, gasoline-focused question shoppers ask. It does not, by itself, establish a complete official comparison of family SUVs or identify the least-economical model.
