In Kelley Blue Book’s current ranking of the cheapest compact SUVs of 2024, the Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross is first, with a displayed “Starting Price” of $19,900. That figure is not established as the Eclipse Cross’s original 2024 MSRP. Cars.com used a different measure and named a 2024 Chevrolet Equinox LS with the Driver Confidence II Package its compact-SUV best value, at a reported median vehicle price of $27,995. The answer depends on whether you mean the lowest listed starting price or value judged using broader costs.
Which 2024 compact crossover is cheapest?
For the lowest price in Kelley Blue Book’s current cheapest-compact-SUV ranking, the answer is the Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross. KBB displays a $19,900 “Starting Price” for it and places it ahead of the other listed models. Because the page does not verify that price as the vehicle’s original model-year MSRP, treat it as KBB’s displayed figure—not as a confirmed 2024 sticker price.
KBB also classifies the Eclipse Cross as a compact SUV, gives it an expert rating of 3.3, and lists combined fuel economy of 25 mpg. Those are KBB’s figures, not a separate assessment of the vehicle.

Why Cars.com picked a different best-value compact SUV
Cars.com’s 2024 Affordability Report selected a 2024 Chevrolet Equinox LS equipped with the Driver Confidence II Package as its compact-SUV best value. Its reported median vehicle price was $27,995, compared with a $35,995 median price for the compact-SUV category. Cars.com considered median list prices and annual fuel costs, so this is a broader value judgment—not a ranking of the lowest displayed entry price.
The two findings answer different questions: KBB identifies the leader in its cheapest-SUV price ranking, while Cars.com highlights a specific Equinox configuration under its affordability methodology. How to compare the prices fairly
A starting price is useful for finding candidates, but the amount you would pay depends on the exact trim, included fees, local availability, and the price offered to you. Keep these distinctions in view:
- Price type: Separate an original manufacturer’s suggested retail price from a later listing price, median list price, dealer offer, or transaction price. The KBB Eclipse Cross figure cited above is labeled “Starting Price,” not verified here as its original 2024 MSRP.
- Trim and equipment: Compare the same trim and any included packages. Cars.com’s value pick is specifically an Equinox LS with the Driver Confidence II Package.
- Destination charges: Check whether delivery fees are included. KBB reported the 2024 Jeep Compass starting MSRP as $27,495 including a $1,595 destination charge. Nissan’s official U.S. 2024 Kicks pricing listed destination and handling separately at $1,390.
- Fuel costs: Cars.com included annual fuel costs in its affordability assessment. A lower entry price alone does not tell you which vehicle will cost less to own.
- Category: Confirm that you are comparing compact crossovers. Nissan identifies the 2024 Kicks as subcompact, so its price should not be treated as a direct compact-SUV ranking result.
- Rating method: A cheapest-price ranking and a best-value selection are not interchangeable; check what each publisher measures before treating one as a universal winner.

What the 2024 affordability figures do—and do not—say
Cars.com considered 85 new vehicles in its 2024 Affordability Report. It also reported that its internal data showed a 77% year-over-year increase in inventory of vehicles priced under $30,000. That inventory figure applies broadly to vehicles, not specifically to compact SUVs. Cars.com news editor Stef Schrader summarized the wider market: “While prices are down, they’re still nowhere near pre-pandemic levels.”
These are dated 2024 market findings, not a guarantee of what a shopper will find now. Inventory, incentives, and dealer offers vary by location and date; the cited report does not establish a current price for any specific shopper.

If “most affordable” means the first-place entry in KBB’s current cheapest-compact-SUV ranking, choose the 2024 Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross as the ranking leader, while treating $19,900 only as KBB’s displayed starting-price figure. If you mean a value pick based on price and annual fuel costs, Cars.com’s 2024 choice was the configured Chevrolet Equinox LS. Before deciding, compare the exact vehicle and fees against a current local offer.
