The MoonLander X Looks Like a Conventional Truck Camper—Until You See What Happens to the Bed

The MoonLander X is a hard-shell pickup topper with a sideways bed that folds into a couch or stows in the cab-over nose. Here is what it includes, costs, weighs, and cannot do.

The MoonLander X is not a conventional cab-over pickup camper. Its pointed nose makes it look as though it has an upper bedroom, but that space primarily stores the removable bed panels and mattress. The actual sleeping platform lies sideways across the truck bed, and the panels can fold into a couch or be stowed overhead to return the bed to cargo duty.

In practical terms, the MoonLander X is a full hard-shell truck topper with camper functionality: more weather protection and flexibility than a basic shell, but less living space and fewer built-in systems than a true slide-in RV camper. Radica unveiled it in October 2024, and it remains in the company’s lineup in 2026. Its current design is organized around three modes: Bed, Couch, and Stow.

What the MoonLander X actually is

Radica positions the MoonLander X between a truck topper and a truck camper, which is a more accurate description than calling it a small RV. The shell clamps to the truck’s bed rails, while the truck bed itself remains the lower floor. There is no raised slide-in-camper floor occupying the entire bed and no separate camper body that can be detached and used independently of the pickup.

Toy Camper SUV Trailer Towing RV Motorhome Toys for Boys Diecast Truck Model Car Metal Pull Back Toy Cars Vehicle, Doors Open Light Sound, Outdoor Land Adventure Play Set, Kids Gifts
  • [Product Specification] Dimension:SUV-L5.2" x W2.2" x H2.3", motorhome-L5.9" x W1.9" x H2.4"; Weight: 330g; Color: black and white.
  • [Material] Die-cast toy SUV is mainly made of zinc alloy metal with plastic parts, rubber tires; the motorhome is made of plastic.
  • [Function] Pull back function and front doors, back door can be opened; Press the SUV to activate light and sound.
  • [Best gifts toys] This pull back travel motor home toy is a wonderful choice for outdoor beach or sandbox play. Also great for home and office decoration.
  • [Kids boys gifts] This RV toy truck trailer is a wonderful choice of gift for 3 4 5 6 7 years old kids, especially for birthday and Christmas. Great stocking stuffers.

It is also more than an empty canopy. The base product includes the hard shell, slim side pods, a reinforced roof, a lift-up rear door, locking T-handles, an internal bolt latch, brake light and side-marker hardware, a full-size lofted bed frame, truck-bed clamps, and in-shop installation, according to Radica’s current MoonLander X product page and FAQ.

What it does not include as standard is just as important. The base configuration does not arrive with a built-in kitchen, bathroom, plumbing, water tank, full electrical system, or standard mattress. Buyers can add or supply those elements themselves, but the X is fundamentally a modular shelter rather than a self-contained RV.

  • Not a conventional slide-in camper: it clamps to the bed rails rather than filling the bed with a raised camper floor.
  • Not a rooftop tent: it has hard walls, no canvas sleeping tent, no ladder, and no rooftop-tent deployment routine.
  • Not a two-story camper: the cab-over section is mainly for storage, not a second adult bedroom.
  • Not merely a topper: it includes a removable sleeping platform and furniture-like Couch mode.

The visual trick: the nose stores the bed

The MoonLander X’s entire sales pitch depends on a layout that is easy to misunderstand in photographs. The cab-over nose resembles the alcove on a traditional truck camper, so it is natural to expect an upper mattress. Instead, Radica uses that forward volume to store the X’s removable bed panels and mattress.

  1. From the outside, the nose suggests a conventional cab-over bunk.
  2. Inside, the truck bed remains largely open beneath it.
  3. The main mattress sits sideways across the bed rails and side pods.
  4. When sleeping space is not needed, the bed panels fold into a couch or move into the nose.
  5. With the panels and mattress stowed, the pickup can go back to carrying larger cargo.

That is the product’s genuinely useful idea. The X is not creating a second floor so much as making the sleeping structure temporary without requiring the owner to remove the entire shell. It can change from a sleeping shelter into a secure gear-hauling topper while remaining mounted on the truck.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How the three modes work

Bed mode: a sideways sleeping platform

In Bed mode, two removable panels lie flat from side to side across the truck bed. This east-to-west arrangement is what allows the sleeping area to fit inside a relatively low shell without requiring a long, front-to-back camper floor.

Radica currently lists approximately 6 to 7 feet of sleeping length, depending on the truck, bed length, and side-pod configuration. That range is useful but not universal. Radica’s FAQ says the platform can vary by build, including twin, full, or queen configurations, so the phrase “full-size bed frame” in the included-equipment list should not be interpreted as a guarantee that every truck receives a queen-size mattress.

The mattress is not included with the basic bed panels. Buyers need to confirm the exact platform dimensions for their truck and selected pods before ordering a mattress. Tall sleepers should also pay attention to usable width and the placement of doors, windows, and side pods rather than relying only on a broad “6- to 7-foot” marketing range.

Couch mode: a place to sit inside

In Couch mode, the bed panels fold into a bench and backrest. This gives the X a more usable interior during rain, insects, heat, or midday downtime than the original MoonLander.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

It is still a low interior. Radica lists 39.5 inches of interior height above the bed panel on mid-size builds and 41.5 inches on full-size builds. That is enough to sit, change clothes, organize equipment, and shelter from weather, but not enough for an adult to stand. A bubble window can add approximately 4 inches of headroom in its selected location.

Couch mode is arguably the strongest practical improvement over the original design. The X does not become a room in the conventional RV sense, but it provides a usable seated lounge instead of functioning only as a bed at night.

Stow mode: the truck becomes a hauler again

In Stow mode, the bed panels and mattress move into the cab-over storage area. That leaves the truck bed available for cargo such as bicycles, dirt bikes, coolers, recovery equipment, or other outdoor gear.

However, “the bed is open” does not mean every bulky object will fit in every truck. Usable cargo space depends on the bed length, wheel wells, tailgate position, cab-over clearance, side-pod selection, and the dimensions of the load. A full-height dirt bike, refrigerator, motorcycle, or tall storage box may still conflict with the shell or rear door. Measure the truck and the actual gear before treating Stow mode as a universal toy-hauler solution.

Is the cab-over area another bed?

The nose is a storage loft first. It is not a conventional cab-over bunk.

New Atlas described the upper section as storage rather than a second bed, and Radica’s current product page presents it as a place for essentials or a “cozy spot for the little ones.” The cautious interpretation is that it may work for miscellaneous gear, a child, or possibly a pet depending on the setup, but it is not advertised as a normal adult sleeping berth.

It should not be counted as a four-sleeper layout. The X does not provide two adult sleeping levels in the manner of a traditional cab-over camper. Buyers who need a second adult bed should look at a different floor plan.

Dimensions, weight, and the numbers that matter

The MoonLander X is lightweight relative to a conventional hard-side slide-in camper, but buyers need to distinguish the advertised shell range from the loaded camping weight.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Specification Mid-size truck Full-size truck
Manufacturer-listed shell weight 320–430 lb 360–520 lb
Shell height above bed rail 42 inches 44 inches
Interior height above bed panel 39.5 inches 41.5 inches
Approximate listed sleeping length About 6–6.5 feet, depending on pods About 6.5–7 feet, depending on pods

Those weights are manufacturer-listed ranges, not a finished, ready-to-camp setup. Optional insulation adds approximately 35–65 lb. Radica lists a rooftop air conditioner at 55 lb and a 270-degree awning at approximately 55 lb. A mattress, windows, fan, solar hardware, power bank, occupants, clothing, food, water, recovery equipment, bicycles, and other cargo add more.

Before buying, compare the expected completed build and camping load with the truck’s actual payload rating, axle ratings, tire ratings, and door-jamb payload sticker. A 320-pound base estimate does not mean a truck has only 320 pounds of additional load once the camper is equipped and occupied.

The shell adds height but not standing room. Total vehicle height depends on the pickup, bed-rail height, roof accessories, fan, air conditioner, and any cargo mounted above the shell. Earlier launch coverage estimated roughly five feet from the truck floor to the roof on a typical setup, but owners should measure the completed truck before entering garages, trails, parking structures, or low-clearance fuel stations.

Slim pods versus full pods

Side pods affect both the exterior footprint and sleeping length:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Slim pods: designed to remain approximately flush with the wheel wells and provide about 6 feet of sleeping length on mid-size trucks and 6.5 feet on full-size trucks.
  • Full pods: extend farther past the wheel wells and provide about 6.5 feet on mid-size trucks and 7 feet on full-size trucks. They currently add $200.

Radica says the angled pods preserve side-mirror visibility. Slim pods stay closer to the truck’s original width, while full pods remain narrower than the mirrors according to the company. That is a manufacturer claim, not independent visibility testing, so drivers should check the finished vehicle from the driver’s seat.

What the base price buys

Radica’s current listed base prices vary by truck class and bed length:

Truck application Current listed base price
Mid-size, 5-foot bed $7,950
Mid-size, 6-foot bed $8,350
Full-size, 5.5-foot bed $8,450
Full-size, 6.5-foot bed $8,850
Full-size, 8-foot bed $9,650

Prices are before options and tax. Radica’s current product page also advertises a limited promotion of up to $2,250, but the promotion’s end date and eligibility should be confirmed at checkout.

The base product is a shell-and-bed system, not a finished expedition camper. Current option prices visible on Radica’s product page include:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Option Listed price
Full side pods $200
Single barn door $300
Clear or black anodized panels $250
Insulation package $2,950–$3,450, depending on truck size
270-degree awning $899 installed
Rooftop air conditioning $2,999 installed
4,200-Wh power bank $1,949 retail
Shore-power inlet $150 installed

Fans, windows, solar equipment, lighting, mattress, upgraded finishes, and other accessories are separate selections. A buyer should price the X as a complete build rather than compare only the entry-level shell price with a fully equipped camper.

Truck compatibility is more complicated than bed length

Radica lists MoonLander X applications for common mid-size and full-size pickups including the Toyota Tacoma, Ford Ranger, Chevrolet Colorado, Nissan Frontier, Jeep Gladiator, Toyota Tundra, Nissan Titan, Ford F-150, Chevrolet Silverado, and Ram trucks. The company also lists applications for the Ford Maverick, Honda Ridgeline, and Rivian with special conditions. Use the model-specific BASE-X builder rather than assuming that a similar bed length means a guaranteed fit.

Important exceptions listed by Radica include:

  • 2024-and-newer Ford Ranger: truck-bed modifications are required.
  • Ford Maverick: slight truck-bed modification is required.
  • Honda Ridgeline: utility tracks are required.
  • Rivian and newer Ford trucks: Radica says it does not wire the brake light because of wiring complexity.
  • Brake-light connection: compatibility through a trailer connector is not guaranteed for every truck.

Bed-rail shape, rail contact, wheel-well position, tailgate design, wiring, and model-year changes can all affect installation. The X is installed in Radica’s shop as part of the base offering, but buyers should confirm the exact truck year, trim, bed configuration, modifications, lighting arrangement, and any required shipping or travel arrangements before placing an order.

Can you remove it when you need the truck?

Yes, but the ease of removal depends on the equipment purchased. The shell is clamped to the truck bed. Radica sells a Quick Bolt-On Camper Jacks Retrofit Kit for MoonLander and MoonLander X at a listed $1,350.

  • [Best gifts toys] This vintage truck toy is suitable for playing indoor and outdoor(pretend play and sandbox play). It’s a great choice of toy gift for kids boys girls age at 3 4 5 6 7 years old, especially for Birthday and Christmas.
  • [Cake decoration] This small-size truck toy can also be used as a cake decoration, your kids will be surprised if you decorate the cake in a “pickup-truck-style” way. Moreover, it’s also a good choice for home and office decoration.

Radica says the jack system enables one-person removal and installation in roughly 10 minutes using reusable seals and a quick-disconnect brake-light connection. That is a manufacturer claim and assumes correct installation, adequate room, and a suitable storage surface. Without the jack system, buyers should assume that removing a several-hundred-pound shell requires multiple people or shop equipment. It is not the same as casually lifting off a lightweight soft topper.

Ventilation, weather, and climate limitations

A hard shell eliminates canvas but does not eliminate condensation or heat. Radica recommends at least one fan and one screened window. The fan helps move warm, humid air out, while screened windows allow cross-flow without leaving the camper completely open to insects.

Bubble windows can add approximately 4 inches of headroom and more natural light, but they can also admit more heat and create additional surfaces where condensation may form. Insulation is optional and costs thousands of dollars, while rooftop air conditioning requires additional power infrastructure. The X can be customized for different climates, but the base shell should not be treated as an automatically comfortable four-season living space.

Radica claims marine-grade seals, weather flaps, and a highly water-resistant shell. The 2026 refresh adds integrated upper and lower weather flaps around the rear door and tailgate interface. These are manufacturer claims rather than an independent waterproof rating. Some owner discussions have reported leaks around cab-side windows and other seals, but those reports are anecdotal and do not establish a product-wide failure rate. A prospective buyer should inspect seals, ask how warranty claims are handled, and request the latest installation and weatherproofing details.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Radica also says the redesigned nose improved fuel economy by approximately 0.5–1 mpg. That is a manufacturer-reported result, not an independent fuel-economy test. Similarly, descriptions such as “four-season,” “class-leading,” “first of its kind,” “toy hauler,” or “drives like a topper” should be understood as marketing or positioning language unless supported by a specific independent test.

Roof loading requires a current confirmation

Launch-era coverage reported a manufacturer-stated roof rating of 300 pounds dynamic and 500 pounds static. However, Radica’s current MoonLander X product page clearly describes a reinforced roof without clearly repeating those two numerical ratings.

That distinction matters if a buyer is considering a rooftop tent, cargo box, kayak, or a person on the roof. Treat the older figures as launch-material specifications that need current written confirmation for the exact configuration. Do not assume that an accessory is safe simply because the roof is described as reinforced.

The main compromises

No standing room

The X is roomier than a basic shell and more livable in Couch mode, but its roughly 40-inch interior height above the bed panel remains a seated-height layout. Changing clothes, cooking, and moving around will be more constrained than in a pop-up or full-size camper.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

No second adult bed

The storage nose is not an upper adult bedroom. Couples who need separate beds or families who need a genuine four-person sleeping arrangement should not count the cab-over as additional sleeping capacity.

No standard camper systems

There is no standard kitchen, bathroom, water system, propane system, or complete electrical package. That simplicity reduces weight and lets owners customize the shell, but it also means the buyer must bring or build the systems needed for longer trips.

Sideways sleeping is a real fit question

The bed’s transverse layout is the reason the X stays compact, but it is not ideal for every sleeper. Confirm the platform’s exact dimensions, mattress thickness, side-pod configuration, and whether the selected truck provides enough length for the intended occupants.

Accessory creep can erase the weight advantage

The shell may weigh as little as 320 pounds in a mid-size configuration, but insulation, air conditioning, an awning, a power bank, mattress, occupants, water, food, bikes, and recovery equipment can quickly consume payload. The relevant calculation is the complete travel setup, including passengers and cargo—not the empty shell alone.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

It remains tied to the pickup

Unlike a towable trailer or a detached RV camper, the MoonLander X is useful only when mounted on its truck. Removing it is possible, especially with the jack kit, but it requires planning and storage space.

MoonLander X versus the original MoonLander

Feature MoonLander MoonLander X
Basic concept Side-pod hard-shell camper Side-pod hard-shell camper with cab-over storage
Interior height above bed 33.25 inches 39.5–41.5 inches
Modes Bed-focused, removable panels Bed, Couch, and Stow
Cab-over storage No Yes
Current starting price $5,600 $7,950
Typical listed weight 225–420 lb 320–520 lb

The original MoonLander is the better choice when lower price, lower weight, and simplicity matter most. The X costs more and weighs more, but adds the storage nose, extra interior height, Couch mode, and the ability to stow the sleeping system while retaining cargo utility. Radica’s own comparison makes the same broad distinction.

How it compares with other camper formats

Alternative Better choice when… Main trade-off
Radica ROVER You primarily want topper-style storage and an integrated roof-rack system. Less camper-oriented interior space and sleeping functionality.
Super Pacific X1 You need adult standing room and a larger sleeping loft. It uses a pop-up, soft-sided structure rather than fully hard walls; listed weight is approximately 345–397 lb and opened height exceeds 87 inches.
Tune M1 You want more than 6 feet 4 inches of headspace and a more conventional topper-camper layout. Higher listed starting price—$12,999 for mid-size trucks and $13,999 for full-size trucks—and approximately 400 lb listed weight.
Kimbo 6 or Scout Kenai You want a true hard-side camper with more integrated living capability. Much heavier and more expensive: Kimbo lists 830–1,200 lb and a $27,990 starting price; Scout lists the Kenai at approximately 1,232 lb and $29,990.

The MoonLander X occupies a narrow but credible middle ground. It is more functional than a basic topper, substantially simpler than a full hard-side camper, and more weatherproof than a pop-up tent system. Its appeal depends on whether the buyer values the ability to reclaim the truck bed more than interior volume.

Who should buy the MoonLander X?

The X is a strong fit for a truck owner who:

  • wants hard walls instead of canvas;
  • wants to sleep in the truck without towing a trailer;
  • regularly carries bikes, dirt bikes, coolers, or other outdoor equipment;
  • likes the idea of a sideways bed;
  • needs a place to sit inside but does not require standing height;
  • prefers a relatively simple shell that can be customized with a personal mattress, power station, storage, and cooking setup;
  • values keeping the camper mounted while still being able to recover bed space in Stow mode.

Who should choose something else?

Look elsewhere if you need:

  • adult standing room;
  • a genuine second adult bed;
  • a built-in kitchen, bathroom, water tank, or full electrical system;
  • a guaranteed queen bed regardless of truck or configuration;
  • a camper that can be detached and used independently;
  • large interior storage with minimal conversion work;
  • enough payload margin for a heavily equipped build, passengers, water, and motorcycles.

Current ordering, lead-time, and warranty caveats

Radica’s current pages do not present perfectly consistent ordering information. The MoonLander X product page says a $1,000 deposit secures a place in the queue for 14 days, with $500 non-refundable. The generic BASE-X builder still says a $2,000 production deposit is required.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The model-specific product page currently shows an estimated completion window of approximately four months after invoice payment, with September–October 2026 displayed as the current estimate. Other site elements say “ML & MLX: 3 Months.” Buyers should use the model-specific checkout quote and confirm the deposit, refund terms, production schedule, installation appointment, and shipping or pickup arrangements in writing.

Radica’s site also lists a limited promotion of up to $2,250, but the end date and eligibility should be confirmed at checkout rather than assumed from a product-page banner.

The formal warranty page says the original buyer receives a two-year limited warranty from the date of purchase. It covers defects in materials, structural integrity, and workmanship, but excludes categories including normal cosmetic wear, owner alterations, unapproved third-party hardware, off-road damage, road debris, potholes, road salt, freezing, and improper handling.

There is a documentation conflict: Radica’s FAQ describes the warranty as running from the date of installation, while the formal warranty page says date of purchase. The formal warranty document should be treated as the more authoritative source, but buyers should ask Radica to identify the applicable terms in the sales paperwork before paying a deposit.

MoonLander X buyer checklist

  1. Confirm the exact truck fit: include model year, trim, bed length, bed-rail design, tailgate, wiring, and any required modifications.
  2. Calculate loaded payload: add the shell, every option, mattress, occupants, water, food, recovery gear, and bikes or motorcycles.
  3. Measure your sleeping setup: verify the platform length and width for the selected pods and truck before ordering a mattress.
  4. Decide whether slim or full pods are worth it: full pods improve listed sleeping length but extend farther past the wheel wells and add weight and cost.
  5. Plan ventilation: budget for at least one fan and a screened window, especially if sleeping in humid or cold conditions.
  6. Check total height: include the pickup, shell, fan, air conditioner, awning, and any roof cargo.
  7. Ask for current roof-load limits: especially before adding a rooftop tent, cargo box, kayak, or person-accessed equipment.
  8. Decide how removal will work: budget for the jack retrofit or identify the people and equipment needed to remove the shell safely.
  9. Review warranty language: clarify the start date, original-buyer limitation, third-party accessories, and off-road exclusions.
  10. Get ordering terms in writing: deposit amount, non-refundable portion, lead time, promotion, installation, and final payment requirements.

Where to see the layout before buying

Because the X’s value is primarily in its transformation, photographs can be misleading. Radica’s official MoonLander X walkaround and demonstration video are useful for seeing how the bed panels, storage nose, rear door, and interior modes relate to one another. Buyers should still verify dimensions and options against the current configurator, since product pages and availability can change.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the MoonLander X a conventional slide-in camper?

No. It clamps to the pickup’s bed rails and uses the truck bed as its lower floor. It is best understood as a hard-shell topper with a removable camper bed, rather than a conventional slide-in RV with a raised floor, kitchen, bathroom, and built-in living systems.

Can two adults sleep in the MoonLander X?

Yes, depending on the selected truck and platform configuration, two adults can use the main sideways bed. The cab-over nose should not be counted as a second adult bunk; it is primarily storage and may be suitable for a child or pet in some setups.

Does the MoonLander X include a mattress?

No. The base product includes the bed frame and removable panels, but the mattress is a separate purchase. Radica says platform sizes can vary by truck and build, so confirm the exact dimensions before buying bedding.

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

Can the truck bed still carry cargo with the MoonLander X installed?

Yes, in Stow mode the bed panels and mattress move into the cab-over storage area. The amount and height of cargo that will fit still depend on the truck, bed length, wheel wells, tailgate, rear-door clearance, and the specific load.

Does the MoonLander X have standing room?

No. Radica lists approximately 39.5 inches of interior height above the bed panel on mid-size builds and 41.5 inches on full-size builds. That provides sitting room in Couch mode but not adult standing height.

The Bottom Line

The MoonLander X’s cab-over is clever because it hides the bed rather than adding a second bedroom. That makes the X unusually flexible: it can provide a hard-shell sleeping shelter, a seated interior, or a secure cargo topper without removing the shell from the truck. The compromise is equally clear—no standing room, no second adult bunk, no standard RV systems, and a final weight and price that can rise quickly with options.

Buy it if your priority is a compact, hard-sided truck camper that can give the bed back to bikes and gear. Skip it for a full living room, built-in amenities, adult standing space, or a genuinely four-person sleeping layout.
