The MIT Professor Behind the 42-Volt Car Push—and What Replaced It

MIT professor John Kassakian led a late-1990s effort to advance 42-volt car systems. Toyota documented a 42V mild hybrid, but the later industry path favored supplemental 48V networks that retain 12V electrical systems.

MIT professor John Kassakian helped lead the late-1990s push for a 42-volt automotive electrical system, but 42 volts never became a universal standard. The need he and other engineers identified did not go away: as vehicles demanded more electrical power, automakers adopted supplemental 48-volt systems for many mild hybrids while retaining a 12-volt electrical domain.

Why engineers wanted to move beyond 12 volts

Traditional automotive electrical systems are commonly described as 12-volt systems, although a running vehicle’s electrical voltage is closer to 14 volts. By the 1990s, growing electrical demand was making that architecture harder to extend efficiently and economically. Engineers were considering functions such as electronic valves and clutches, electric steering and braking, heated catalysts, and power electronics.

Those loads made a higher-voltage network attractive: for the same amount of power, a higher voltage can carry it with less current, reducing the demands on wiring and electrical components. But changing the vehicle’s electrical foundation was not simply a matter of fitting a different battery. A new architecture would affect components, manufacturing, service practices, reliability, and cost.

What John Kassakian and the MIT consortium did

Kassakian, an MIT professor of electronic engineering, chaired the Consortium on Advanced Automotive Electrical/Electronic Components and Systems. Established in 1995, the cross-industry effort sought agreement on a higher automotive voltage and examined the trade-offs in weight, cost, and efficiency.

EDN reported in 1999 that more than 100 engineers had participated. At the last meeting described in that report, 115 representatives from 26 companies attended; membership reportedly cost $50,000 per year at the time. The consortium’s work helped put 42 volts forward as a candidate architecture, rather than establishing a standard that every automaker would adopt.

Why the 42-volt transition did not become universal

The obstacle was the cost and risk of replacing a mature 12-volt ecosystem. Automakers would have had to account for the expense of new components and infrastructure, as well as reliability and warranty concerns. The higher-voltage system made engineering sense for added loads, but the business case had to justify changing a platform used across vehicles and suppliers.

Kassakian described economics as the deciding force, saying, “This [change] will be driven by the economics of the auto industry.” He also argued that new power-hungry functions would drive change. His confidence that companies would eventually move to 42 volts reflected the pressure he saw from increasing electrical demand; it did not mean a universal 42-volt rollout was assured on the timeline anticipated in the late 1990s.

Did Toyota build a 42-volt mild hybrid?

Yes. A 2002 SAE paper by Toyota and Denso describes a 42-volt mild-hybrid power-control system. It included a belt-driven motor-generator, an inverter, and a DC/DC converter that supplied 14-volt loads. It is evidence that 42-volt technology was developed and documented for a vehicle system, not evidence that 42 volts became the industry-wide electrical standard.

How today’s 48-volt systems differ from the original proposal

SAE’s 2015 reference on 48-volt developments and NHTSA’s later regulatory analysis describe supplemental 48-volt systems as a practical step for mild hybrids. Rather than replacing the 12-volt domain outright, these systems add a higher-voltage network for functions that benefit from more power. They can support idle stop and regenerative braking, while the 12-volt side continues to serve conventional loads.

Comparison 42-volt proposal and Toyota system Supplemental 48-volt mild hybrids
Electrical architecture Toyota’s documented system used a 42-volt mild-hybrid power-control system and a DC/DC converter for 14-volt loads (Toyota and Denso, SAE paper, 2002). A supplemental 48-volt network retains a 12-volt domain (SAE, 2015; NHTSA regulatory analysis).
Functions and loads The late-1990s proposal targeted rising electrical loads, including electronic valves, clutches, steering, braking, heated catalysts, and power electronics (EDN, 1999). SAE and NHTSA describe support for high-power loads, idle stop, and regenerative braking.
Motor-generator and energy storage Toyota’s paper describes a belt-driven motor-generator, inverter, and DC/DC converter; battery details are not stated in the cited description (Toyota and Denso, SAE paper, 2002). Audi’s MHEV plus system uses a powertrain generator, belt alternator starter, and 48-volt lithium-iron-phosphate battery (Audi product materials).
Efficiency and emissions A comparable emissions target is not stated in the cited description of Toyota’s 42-volt system. A 2014 SAE technical-paper abstract described up to a 15% CO2-reduction target for a 48-volt mild-hybrid application; that is a target for the described application, not a general result for all 48-volt vehicles.
Adoption and context The consortium promoted 42 volts, and Toyota documented a system; a current market share for the original 42-volt standard is not established by the cited material. The EPA reported that hybrids made up 15% of new-vehicle production in model year 2024 in its 2025 reporting, classifying systems of 48 volts or less as mild hybrids. That category is broader than 48-volt systems alone.

What a 48-volt mild hybrid can do—and what it does not mean

A 48-volt mild hybrid adds electrical assistance without necessarily replacing the conventional engine-and-transmission arrangement with a full hybrid system. The higher-voltage network can support functions such as idle stop and energy recovery during braking, while a separate 12-volt domain remains available for conventional electrical loads.

  • TOP-LEVEL SAFETY --- 15 times more vibration-resistant.Vent cap design that resists acid leakage.Top-level safety features and absolutely no free acid.Original Spare Parts ensure the replacement battery has the same quality as the original one.

Audi’s MHEV plus system is a current example of this kind of architecture: its stated components include a powertrain generator, a belt alternator starter, and a 48-volt lithium-iron-phosphate battery. It illustrates how manufacturers now combine electrical assistance with a 48-volt subsystem; it is not evidence that every mild hybrid uses the same hardware or configuration.

What happened to 42-volt cars?

The 42-volt effort helped frame the problem and explore a possible solution, and Toyota’s 2002 paper shows that a 42-volt mild-hybrid system was engineered. But the broad transition Kassakian anticipated did not result in a universal 42-volt standard. The later path described by SAE and NHTSA is a supplemental 48-volt network paired with a retained 12-volt domain—a way to add electrical capability without replacing the entire established system.
