Maintain it using the R-EV schedule—not generic rotary-engine advice or the battery-electric MX-30 schedule. Mazda’s detailed figures below come from its Japan-market online owner’s manual, April 2024 edition; check the manual for your own market and model year before choosing fluids or setting service reminders.
How often should you change oil in a Mazda MX-30 R-EV?
Mazda Japan’s April 2024 manual specifies engine-oil and oil-filter replacement every 15,000 km or one year, whichever comes first. The manual also says to replace them when the vehicle’s maintenance indicator illuminates; its timing can depend on vehicle use. Mazda refers owners to a separate maintenance note for severe conditions, so confirm the applicable schedule for your driving pattern and market in the vehicle’s manual. See Mazda’s MX-30 owner’s manual.
What oil does the Mazda rotary hybrid use?
The Japan-market manual calls for oil meeting API SN or higher and lists SAE 0W-20 and SAE 5W-30. Choose viscosity according to the outside-temperature guidance in the applicable manual. Mazda names Golden ECO 7 (0W-20), Golden Turbo (5W-30), and Golden SN (5W-30) as recommended oils. It notes that other mineral oils and some synthetic oils may be usable but can worsen starting, and advises consulting a Mazda dealer for details.
The manual gives 5.4 L as the reference capacity for an oil-and-filter change. This is a reference figure, not an instruction to pour in that amount without checking the level and following the service procedure. Mazda’s official FAQ also addresses the ROTARY-EV oil-change quantity. If buying oil, match the specification and temperature recommendation in your exact vehicle’s manual rather than relying on a product’s general “rotary” or “hybrid” label.

How to check the engine-oil level
Mazda includes engine-oil level in the R-EV’s under-hood inspection points. The manual says to use the dipstick and keep the level between its upper and lower marks; consult the vehicle’s maintenance note for the detailed checking procedure. The other listed owner inspection points are brake-fluid level, 12 V battery fluid, coolant level, and washer fluid. Refer to Mazda’s R-EV manual and maintenance information for the procedure and any cautions specific to your vehicle.
Keep the two coolant systems distinct
The R-EV has separate EV-system and engine coolant circuits. Mazda Japan’s manual lists these reference capacities and Golden long-life coolant replacement intervals:
| System | Reference capacity | Golden long-life coolant interval |
|---|---|---|
| EV system | 4.3 L | Initially 180,000 km or nine years; thereafter 100,000 km or four years |
| Engine | 6.0 L | Initially 180,000 km or nine years; thereafter 100,000 km or four years |
For ordinary Mazda long-life coolant, the same manual lists replacement every two years after an initial three years. It says to use Mazda Golden long-life coolant when the specified marking appears at or near the radiator cap, and to contact a Mazda dealer for details. These intervals and capacities are Japan-market manual data; do not apply them to another market, coolant formulation, or model without checking its requirements. See Mazda’s MX-30 manual.

Rotary-engine care is only one part of maintaining the R-EV. Mazda Japan’s service data also specifies:

Before scheduling work or buying parts and fluids, verify the vehicle’s market, model year, and applicable normal- or severe-use schedule. Use the R-EV section rather than a battery-electric MX-30 schedule, and treat the maintenance indicator as an additional prompt for oil and filter service. For coolant, identify the required type from the marking near the radiator cap; if unclear, ask a Mazda dealer. The figures here are Mazda manual specifications, not independent test results.
