The company made full-size clay models of both, but the Cadillac proposal was deferred as GM faced budget problems. It never became a production car, and its final engine and specifications were not settled in Bob Lutz’s retrospective account.
Was GM really planning a mid-engine Cadillac XLR?
Former GM vice chairman Bob Lutz described a real proposal for a mid-engine XLR replacement, developed alongside a mid-engine Corvette. In his 2015 retrospective, Lutz says GM made full-size clay models of both cars, each with its own body, and began work on the program. That establishes more than a speculative sketch, but it does not mean the car had reached production approval or final engineering.
The chronology is best understood as an exploration that was later deferred, not as a single, clearly documented cancellation date. Lutz recalls GM running into budget problems around 2005 and says that by 2007 or 2008 it was clear the money would not be available. Later accounts may describe a green light around 2007, but Lutz’s own retrospective emphasizes the worsening funding outlook and deferral.
Why was the mid-engine XLR deferred?
Budget problems are the reason Lutz gives. The mid-engine Corvette and Cadillac replacement were ambitious programs, and GM ultimately deferred the work as funding tightened. The available account does not establish that the XLR proposal was cancelled because of a specific engineering failure, market test, or finalized cost estimate.

What might the proposed Cadillac have looked like mechanically?
The proposal’s layout was mid-engine, and its body was to be distinct from the Corvette’s. Beyond those points, the powertrain remained an open question in Lutz’s account: GM had not settled whether both cars would use a small-block engine or whether the Cadillac would receive a twin-turbo Northstar. There are no established final figures for output, transmission, price, or performance, and no confirmed production date.
A later GM Authority retrospective discusses a supercharged Northstar and reports a development cost of about $900 million. Those details are not substantiated as finalized specifications or an independently verified GM budget in Lutz’s first-person account. They should be treated as later reporting, not settled facts about a production-ready car.

How the proposal differed from the production Cadillac XLR
The real XLR was a front-engine, rear-wheel-drive luxury roadster with a retractable hardtop and a Northstar V8. Cadillac’s 2007 model-year press material, republished by Cadillac V-Net, gives these manufacturer-rated engine figures:

These are specifications for the production roadster, not the unrealized mid-engine replacement. The XLR-V’s supercharged engine in particular should not be mistaken for a confirmed engine choice for the proposed car. Cadillac also described the production XLR’s rear-mounted transmission as contributing to near 50/50 front-to-rear weight distribution; that detail belongs to the actual front-engine XLR, not to the mid-engine proposal.

Was the mid-engine XLR ever built, or revived later?
No production version resulted from the proposal described by Lutz. Later images do not change that history: a December 2024 GM Authority article covered social-media renderings of a futuristic “2025 Cadillac XLR” and reported no known GM plans for such a car at that time. The renderings were unofficial visualizations, not a Cadillac announcement.
In May 2025, GM Authority reported a CNBC interview in which GM president Mark Reuss rejected a Corvette-based Cadillac sports car on the Corvette Y2XX platform, quoting him: “It was developed as a secondary car to the Corvette, on purpose. We would never do that.” The remark concerned a Corvette-based Cadillac sports car; it does not establish that Cadillac will never make any kind of future performance vehicle.
