A 1997 TIME profile documents several cars associated with him then, including a Porsche 959 that the magazine valued at $380,000 at the time. A later list published by The Times of India in February 2026 names more vehicles but says its information is based on online reporting and is not officially confirmed. Neither source establishes a current top-ten ranking.
Can Bill Gates’ 10 most expensive cars be ranked?
No defensible ranking is available from the published accounts cited here. To compare the “most expensive” cars, a list would need to establish which vehicles Gates owns, set a common valuation date and market, and use comparable price evidence. The available sources do not do that.

That distinction matters: a car reported as connected to Gates is not necessarily a confirmed current possession, and an old reported value cannot be compared fairly with an estimate from another date or market. The title’s top-ten premise is therefore unverified, not a ranking that can be filled in with credible prices.
What cars did a 1997 profile associate with Gates?
TIME’s 1997 profile, “In Search of the Real Bill Gates,” describes his interest in fast cars and recounts an early Porsche 911. It names a Porsche 930 Turbo, which the profile calls “the rocket,” as well as a Mercedes, Jaguar XJ6, Carrera Cabriolet 964, Porsche 959, Ferrari 348 and Lexus. These are cars identified in a report from that period—not a current inventory. Read the 1997 TIME profile.

The Porsche 959 and its historical reported value
TIME reported the Porsche 959 at $380,000 in 1997. That is a historical figure attributed to the magazine, not a current market price or evidence that the car is Gates’ most expensive today. The profile also reported that the 959 had ended up impounded in a customs shed because it could not meet U.S. import emission standards.
What does the later car list claim?
A Times of India article published February 23, 2026, lists a Ford Focus, Porsche 911 Turbo 930, Porsche 959, Porsche Taycan, Tesla Model X, BMW 760Li, Mercedes-Benz S-Class, Mercedes-Benz 500SL and Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren, among other vehicles. The article itself cautions that the account is based on information available online and has no official confirmation. Treat these as reported associations, not proof of current ownership. - Glue and Paint sold separately
The same article claims that 337 Porsche 959s were produced and calls the model the most famous car in Gates’ collection. That production-count claim is from the article; being described as the most famous does not establish that the 959 is his most expensive car.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What can be said about “the most expensive”?
The Porsche 959 is prominent in the historical coverage, and the only specific price in the cited accounts is TIME’s $380,000 figure from 1997. That figure should not be presented as current value. The sources do not provide reliable, like-for-like current valuations for a confirmed set of ten cars, so they cannot show which vehicle would rank first today.

A sound ranking would need to identify confirmed ownership, state a valuation date and geography, distinguish purchase price from estimated market value, and apply the same valuation basis to every car. Without those elements, a numbered list with prices would imply more certainty than the reporting supports.
