The Mercedes-Benz W 196 R Stromlinienwagen: The Streamlined Silver Arrow

The Mercedes-Benz W 196 R Stromlinienwagen was the enclosed-wheel version of Mercedes-Benz’s 1954–55 Grand Prix car—not a separate model. Its smooth body was designed for fast circuits such as Reims and Monza, while the same W 196 R could be configured with exposed wheels for tighter tracks, where drivers could see the front wheels more clearly.

What made the Stromlinienwagen different?

Mercedes-Benz returned to Grand Prix racing in 1954 after a 15-year break. The W 196 R was built for the new Formula One engine-capacity limit of 2.5 liters and appeared in two body configurations: the enclosed-wheel Stromlinienwagen and an exposed-wheel version. Mercedes-Benz describes them as alternatives adapted to circuit demands, rather than distinct car models. Mercedes-Benz’s W 196 R history identifies the streamliner with fast tracks and the exposed-wheel car with twistier courses.

Enclosed wheels for speed

The Stromlinienwagen’s bodywork covered the front wheels, creating a smooth, low-drag shape intended to reach high speed on fast circuits. That advantage came with a visibility trade-off: the driver could not see the front wheels as directly as in the exposed-wheel configuration.

Exposed wheels for tighter circuits

On more winding tracks, Mercedes-Benz preferred the open-wheel body because the driver could see the front wheels. That visibility was useful when placing the car through corners. The choice was therefore a practical setup decision: streamlined bodywork for speed on fast courses, exposed wheels for the demands of tighter ones.

Engine, speed and development

The W 196 R used a 2,497 cm³ inline-eight engine with fuel injection and desmodromic valve control. In desmodromic operation, the valve mechanism positively opens and closes the valves rather than relying on conventional valve springs, supporting high engine speeds. Mercedes-Benz lists power across development and versions from 188 kW (256 PS) to 213 kW (290 PS); its account of the improved 1955 car gives up to 213 kW (290 PS) at 8,500 rpm.

Mercedes-Benz publishes a maximum speed of more than 300 km/h for the Stromlinienwagen. Its historical account also gives an initial top speed of around 275 km/h. These figures describe different development contexts, not a single contradictory test result: the W 196 R evolved between 1954 and 1955, and the manufacturer’s technical material presents a range of specifications.

How the streamliner performed in Grand Prix racing

Reims debut in 1954

The Stromlinienwagen made its race debut at the French Grand Prix at Reims on 4 July 1954. Juan Manuel Fangio and Karl Kling finished first and second, respectively. Fangio went on to win the 1954 Formula One championship with the W 196 R.

Monza and the 1955 title

Mercedes-Benz revised the W 196 R’s engine and chassis for 1955. The improved streamliner won the Italian Grand Prix at Monza with Fangio, who claimed his second consecutive championship in the car. Together, the two seasons established the W 196 R as a championship-winning design whose body configuration could be matched to the circuit.

Chassis 00009/54 and its 2025 sale

One W 196 R Stromlinienwagen became notable both for its racing history and its later sale. Mercedes-Benz says chassis 00009/54 was completed after the 1954 season and first raced with exposed wheels. It received a 3-liter engine for the non-championship 1955 Buenos Aires race, where Fangio placed second in both heats and won overall; it was later returned to the regulation 2.5-liter engine.

At the 1955 Monza season finale, Stirling Moss drove chassis 00009/54 in streamliner trim, retiring after 28 laps. After the racing program, the car went to the company museum and was donated to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Museum in 1965. Mercedes-Benz reports that it sold in 2025 for €51,155,000 ($53,917,370). That is the reported result for this particular historically significant chassis, not a general valuation for W 196 R cars. Mercedes-Benz’s account of the chassis and sale provides the provenance and sale figure.

Why Mercedes-Benz ended its racing program

At a ceremony honoring the successful drivers on 24 October 1955, Technical Board member Fritz Nallinger explained that Mercedes-Benz planned to redirect its highly qualified racing personnel toward production-car work, where the company expected racing knowledge and experience to benefit its customers. The company’s account says the decision to withdraw had been made before the Le Mans disaster that year, so the accident should not be presented as the sole cause.
