The Subaru logo represents the Pleiades star cluster in Taurus. Its six-star design also carries a corporate-history meaning: Subaru connects it to the unity of the companies that formed Fuji Heavy Industries.
What do the stars in the Subaru logo represent?
The stars depict the Pleiades, a star cluster in the constellation Taurus. Subaru’s customer-support explanation calls the six-star design mutsuraboshi, meaning “six stars.” The cluster’s Japanese name is also the origin of the Subaru name, according to Subaru customer support and Subaru Corporation.
Why are there six stars?
The six stars connect the celestial symbol to Subaru’s corporate beginnings. Fuji Heavy Industries was formed from capital contributions by five companies with roots in Nakajima Aircraft. Subaru’s company history says the name was chosen to symbolize the merger and unity of the six companies. That corporate interpretation complements, rather than replaces, the logo’s representation of the Pleiades.
When did Subaru first use the logo?
Subaru of America dates the first Subaru logo to 1969 and says the Japanese name for the Pleiades inspired it. The logo remains the centerpiece of the badge on Subaru vehicles. The company’s history page presents a visual timeline, but its accompanying text does not fully describe every design revision.
