The Jaguar XF is a distinctive used luxury sedan with the style, ride comfort and sharp handling to stand apart from more familiar choices. Its appeal comes with a qualification: servicing can be expensive, reliability is variable, and model-year and equipment differences make the specific car more important than a blanket recommendation.
How the XF became Jaguar’s alternative
Jaguar introduced the XF for the 2009 U.S. model year as the replacement for the S-Type. The second generation arrived for the 2016 U.S. model year, launched in 2015, and remained on sale through 2024. It moved to aluminum-intensive construction and offered more interior space than its predecessor, particularly for rear passengers. J.D. Power’s model history outlines the U.S. changes by year.
The XF’s identity was not simply that of a smaller, less expensive luxury car. Its distinctive styling and more involving driving character gave buyers an alternative to the conventional midsize-sedan choices. In its June 2026 used review, What Car? describes the second-generation XF as stylish and sharp-driving, with a smooth ride and strong handling.
What changed across the generations
First generation: the S-Type replacement
The original XF arrived in the U.S. for 2009. It marked a shift away from the S-Type’s retro-influenced design toward a more contemporary look, while establishing the nameplate as Jaguar’s midsize luxury sedan.

- Dimensions approximately L-1.25 inches long.
Second generation: lighter construction and a changing range
The redesigned XF launched in 2015 and was sold as a 2016 model in the U.S. The new aluminum-intensive body brought a larger cabin. At launch, the U.S. range included two supercharged V6 engines. For 2018, Jaguar added a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder and the Sportbrake wagon. The 2021 update restyled the sedan, simplified the trim lineup, removed the V6 from the U.S. range, and revised the cabin technology and appearance. These changes can affect a used-car comparison in practical ways—not just in styling, but in engine and equipment.
Specifications varied by market. What Car?’s review covers the saloon in its market context, including later European-market 2.0-liter petrol and diesel engines and an update that added a larger touchscreen and mild-hybrid diesel. Those details should not be treated as a U.S. trim guide: confirm the market, model year, engine and actual equipment of any car you are considering.

Why a used XF can appeal—and where the trade-off lies
What Car? characterizes the XF as a left-field luxury choice with tempting used prices, good equipment, a smooth ride and excellent handling for a large car. It also flags high servicing costs, electrical issues and inconsistent build quality. These are review findings, not evidence that every XF has a fault. The sensible verdict is value with variable ownership risk, rather than either a guaranteed bargain or a car to reject categorically.
The BMW 5 Series is an obvious comparison. What Car? considers it a stronger all-round used buy for most shoppers, while noting that it is pricier. The XF may suit a buyer who values its particular styling and driving character, provided the condition and maintenance history justify the price.

How to compare specific cars
There is no universal used-XF price or best year established here. Compare like with like, and let the individual car’s records and condition shape the decision.
- Price and condition: Compare cars with similar model years, mileage and specifications, then account for service history and observed condition rather than relying on a generic bargain claim.
- Engine and usage: Verify the exact powertrain and consider local fuel and emissions rules. For a diesel, review how it was used and whether its maintenance history is appropriate; a buyer guide specifically recommends checking DPF regeneration and oil-change records.
- Running costs and support: Allow for the review’s warning about servicing expense. Consider whether you have access to a Jaguar-capable independent specialist and whether the records document regular maintenance.
- Equipment: Test the features and infotainment in the actual car. Availability can differ by year, trim and market, so a listing or description for another XF is not proof of what this one has.
What to check before buying
An inspection checklist is a way to investigate a car, not a diagnosis of a known defect. The following prompts are drawn from CarScout’s X260 buyer guide, a secondary source; they do not establish how often any issue occurs. Ideally, have an independent inspector familiar with Jaguar vehicles assess the car and its records.
- Review the records. Look for a complete service history and check that maintenance is consistent with the car’s age, mileage and engine.
- Listen from a cold start. Ask that the engine be cold before starting it, then listen for unusual noises. A warm engine can make some sounds harder to assess.
- Check for coolant residue. Look for visible residue around the relevant areas and ask an inspector to investigate anything concerning.
- Scan for stored transmission fault codes. An automotive OBD-II diagnostic scanner can help identify stored codes, but reading a code is not the same as diagnosing its cause. Have a qualified technician interpret findings and inspect the vehicle.
- Operate the electronics. Cycle through infotainment functions and test the electrical features fitted to that specific car, rather than assuming they work because they appear in an equipment list.
- For a diesel, ask about DPF regeneration and oil changes. Check the service records and discuss use history with the seller; have a specialist assess concerns rather than treating a checklist item as proof of a fault.
Verify recalls by VIN
A recall affecting some vehicles in a model line does not mean every XF is included, or that a particular car’s repair is complete. Before purchase, check the vehicle identification number (VIN) using Jaguar USA’s recall search. For a U.S. vehicle, NHTSA’s recall and investigation resources provide another way to check. Confirm any applicable work and its completion status against the vehicle’s records or with a dealer.
