A hybrid does not automatically mean a smaller engine. In some lineups, it is the step-up powertrain: electric motors work alongside a substantial gasoline engine to add system output while reducing fuel use. That makes the real comparison less about engine size alone and more about what each version of the same vehicle can do.
Why a hybrid can be an upgrade rather than an engine substitute
A hybrid is a powertrain system, not a synonym for downsizing. Its electric motor or motors can contribute propulsion, changing the vehicle’s combined output and efficiency even if the combustion engine remains turbocharged or large-displacement. Hyundai Motor Group, for example, says its next-generation hybrid system can be paired with different internal-combustion engines. Honda’s planned large-vehicle hybrid uses a V6.
That arrangement can reposition the hybrid as the alternative for buyers seeking both stronger performance and lower fuel consumption—not simply as the economy option below a larger engine. Whether that is true for a particular model depends on its specifications, trim structure and market.
What current manufacturer examples show
Hyundai Palisade: a hybrid paired with a turbo engine
In an April 2025 announcement, Hyundai Motor Group reported that the Palisade 2WD hybrid, in 7- or 9-seat form with 18-inch wheels, produces a maximum system output of 334 PS and maximum torque of 460 Nm. The company said the Palisade 2.5 turbo hybrid delivers approximately 45% greater fuel efficiency and 19% more maximum power than the 2.5 turbo gasoline model. These are manufacturer-published figures and a company comparison, not independent test results; specifications and availability can vary by market. Hyundai Motor Group’s announcement describes the system and its figures.

Honda: development targets for a future V6 hybrid
Honda’s November 2025 workshop announcement described a next-generation large-size HEV with a newly developed V6. The company set development targets of more than 30% better fuel efficiency and more than 10% better full-throttle acceleration versus ICE models then sold in the same segment. Those are targets, not measured results from a vehicle on sale. Honda’s May 2026 business update later said it planned next-generation hybrid launches beginning in 2027 and large-size D-segment-and-above hybrids in North America in 2029; these are corporate plans subject to change. Honda’s 2025 workshop announcement and 2026 business update set out the timing and targets.
How to compare the hybrid with the larger-engine version
Compare versions of the same vehicle and model year wherever possible. Engine displacement by itself does not tell you which version accelerates harder, uses less fuel, or suits a work requirement. Use the following checks before deciding:

- The different model year spans involved: 2023, 2024, 2025.
- Confirm equivalent versions. Check model year, drivetrain, seating or body configuration, wheel size and market. A published figure for one configuration may not apply to another.
- Compare system performance. For a hybrid, look for combined system output and torque, then consider acceleration figures from comparable conditions. Do not compare a hybrid’s combined output with an engine-only figure as if they were measured on the same basis.
- Compare fuel economy on equal terms. Use the same market’s test cycle and equivalent drivetrain and configuration. Manufacturer claims and different test cycles are not directly interchangeable.
- Check towing and payload ratings separately. Confirm the exact vehicle’s ratings and any conditions attached to them. NHTSA technical material notes that torque needs increase with payload and towing demands; tires, vehicle shape and driveline losses also affect powertrain requirements. A hybrid’s advertised output does not by itself establish towing suitability. NHTSA’s technical analysis discusses these factors.
- Match the powertrain to your routine. Regenerative braking and electric assistance can benefit some driving patterns, but the relevant comparison is the fuel use and performance of the exact versions you can buy under your typical conditions.
- Include price and trim position. Compare current local pricing and included equipment only when reliable model- and market-specific figures are available; a higher trim price does not by itself show that the hybrid is the better value.
Why there is no universal replacement story
Automakers are still working with multiple powertrain types rather than following one uniform route. Stellantis describes a portfolio that includes combustion engines, mild and full hybrids, plug-in hybrids, range-extended EVs and battery-electric vehicles. Honda’s 2026 update likewise describes planned growth in next-generation hybrids, including large vehicles for North America. These examples point to evolving choices across portfolios, not proof that hybrids are replacing larger engines everywhere. Stellantis’ powertrain overview describes its range of approaches.
The practical takeaway is vehicle-specific: in one lineup, a hybrid may be the more powerful, more efficient step-up; in another, the larger engine may remain the better match for a buyer’s requirements. Treat automaker targets as targets, announced specifications as manufacturer claims, and verify ratings for the exact model and market you are considering.
