The car was the Honda CR-Z, a petrol-electric hybrid coupe offered with a six-speed manual transmission. Its unusual appeal was the mix of hybrid assistance and driver-operated gearing—not a claim to being Honda’s first manual hybrid.
What was the manual hybrid?
The Honda CR-Z paired a 1.5-liter gasoline engine with Honda’s Integrated Motor Assist (IMA) system and was sold with a six-speed manual. Honda Europe described the 2010 car as combining a petrol-electric hybrid powertrain, manual gearbox and coupe body. In the United States, buyers could also choose a continuously variable transmission (CVT).
That combination made the CR-Z stand out: the electric motor contributed assistance while the driver selected gears and operated the clutch. Honda said IMA’s layout could be paired with different transmission hardware, rather than requiring a CVT. In the CR-Z, the motor sat between the engine and clutch. Honda’s European launch release describes the system and the car’s original positioning.
Was the CR-Z Honda’s first manual hybrid?
No. Honda’s own history points to earlier manual IMA hybrids: the original Insight, launched in 1999, and the 2003 Civic IMA, which had a five-speed manual. The CR-Z is better remembered as a sporty hybrid coupe that brought a six-speed manual into focus.

Honda Europe called the CR-Z the first hybrid fitted with a six-speed manual in its April 8, 2010 release. Honda’s U.S. debut materials used a narrower description, calling it the first mass-produced hybrid with a sport-focused six-speed manual. Those claims should not be broadened into “the first hybrid ever sold with a manual.” Honda’s U.S. debut announcement also acknowledges the earlier Civic IMA.
How did the manual compare with the CVT?
For the 2014 U.S. model, American Honda reported these EPA fuel-economy ratings. The figures apply to that model year and market, not to other years or current real-world driving.

The CVT had higher reported ratings in all three categories. Honda’s 2014 release also said the CR-Z remained the only hybrid vehicle offered with a sporty manual transmission that model year. That was Honda’s dated claim, not a complete survey of every market. The 2014 U.S. announcement gives the ratings and Honda’s wording.
What did Honda claim about European fuel economy?
Honda Europe’s 2010 release listed combined fuel consumption of 5.0 L/100 km and CO₂ emissions of 117 g/km. These are European figures published by Honda in 2010; they are not U.S. EPA ratings or a statement of present-day real-world performance. The release also describes the CR-Z’s IMA system and six-speed manual.

Did the manual remain available near the end of the CR-Z’s run?
Yes. American Honda’s 2015 announcement for the 2016 U.S. model listed an LX with a six-speed manual and a starting MSRP of $20,295. That is historical launch pricing, not a current used-car value. The same announcement said the 2016 CR-Z would go on sale November 3. Honda’s 2016 pricing release documents the late-run manual option.

The CR-Z offered a rare, specific blend: a compact coupe, Honda’s IMA hybrid assistance and a six-speed manual. It was not the first Honda hybrid to use a manual gearbox, but it made that pairing unusually visible in a sporty car—and Honda kept the manual on the U.S. list through the 2016 model year.
