In North America, the RL was Acura’s flagship sedan, and Honda explicitly named Lexus models among its intended rivals. Its equipment was ambitious, but the available evidence does not prove it was more luxurious than a Lexus: that depends on the model year and on whether luxury means features, refinement, performance, or prestige.
Which Honda is the title likely referring to?
It is most likely the Acura RL, known as the Honda Legend in other markets. The title does not identify a year or market, so that identification is an informed interpretation rather than a certainty. In North America, the car wore Acura badges, not Honda badges.
Honda’s 2001 press kit described the RL as a flagship and listed the Lexus GS and LS among its competitors. Its 2005 materials likewise positioned the RL against Lexus. Those documents establish the intended competitive set; they do not establish that the RL outranked Lexus in luxury.
What luxury equipment did the 2005 Acura RL include?
Honda’s 2005 press kit listed these features as standard equipment on that model-year RL:
#1 Best Overall
- Crafted from durable materials such as 100% die - cast metal and premium rubber tires
- Our high - end casting method allows for feature rich details, such as an opening hood, doors , detailed interior, and trunk
- Scale is 1:24
- Collect them all
- Suitable for ages 8+
- Navigation with voice recognition
- AcuraLink real-time traffic
- Active noise cancellation
- Leather-trimmed seats
- A 10-speaker Bose surround-sound system
These are manufacturer-reported equipment claims, not an independent assessment of comfort or quality. The feature list shows why the RL could make a serious luxury pitch: convenience technology, cabin materials, sound, and an effort to reduce noise were all part of its specification.
Why the model year matters
Features changed over the RL’s life, so equipment from one year should not be attributed to another. Honda’s 2008 announcement of the 2009 RL described updates including weather and traffic services, Bluetooth audio, and revised engine and chassis specifications. Those changes belong to the 2009 model, not the 2005 car.

- Brand new box
- Real rubber tires.
- Detailed interior, exterior, engine compartment.
- Has opening hood.
- Made of diecast metal with some plastic parts.
For a meaningful comparison with a Lexus, match the RL and Lexus by model year and market, then check which features were standard and which were optional. A broad comparison that mixes generations or equipment packages can make either car appear better equipped than it was.
Does that make it more luxurious than a Lexus?
Not on the evidence available. “Luxury” is not a single measurable ranking, and Honda’s praise of its own car is not a neutral head-to-head result. The 2005 press kit called the RL the “most luxurious sedan Acura has ever built,” a claim about Acura’s own lineup. Honda executive vice president Tom Elliott also said the car would “definitely set a new benchmark in its category.” These are contemporary manufacturer statements, not proof that it surpassed a Lexus.
Rank #3
- Acura NSX GT3 - MGT00052-MJ Mini GT Model Vehicle
- 1/64 scale Collectible Model race car
- This is a 3" long model with some plastic parts
- Real Rubber Tires, Detailed Exterior, Metal Body And Chassis, Comes In A Blister Pack
- Manufactured by Mini GT
Historical context complicates the title’s claim. MotorTrend reports that the Legend was criticized in comparison with Lexus and Infiniti for perceived luxury, prestige, and innovation. Car and Driver’s contemporary 2005 road test framed the RL as pursuing a different direction from Lexus. Together, these sources support a more careful conclusion: the RL was a well-equipped flagship intended to compete with Lexus, but the available sources do not settle which car was more luxurious overall.
