The rare car behind the “Honda and Mercedes-Benz AMG” story is the South African Honda Ballade AMG, a Civic-related sedan reported in 160i and 180i forms. Honda confirms that it produced Ballades in South Africa through a business arrangement with United Car and Diesel Distributors (UCDD); retrospective automotive reports identify the AMG-associated variants. That history does not establish that Honda and Mercedes-Benz co-developed a new car from scratch.
What was the Honda Ballade AMG?
The Ballade was Honda’s compact four-door sedan for South Africa, related to the Civic sedan. Retrospective reports describe AMG-associated versions as the Ballade 160i and 180i. WhichCar’s account and The Drive’s feature are secondary reporting, not factory specification records.
Did Mercedes-Benz and AMG really build a Honda Civic?
Not in the sense of a documented clean-sheet joint development. Honda’s corporate history describes a South African production and sales arrangement with UCDD, a local distributor that later became DaimlerChrysler South Africa. Separate retrospective automotive coverage connects AMG with particular Ballade versions. The available evidence supports an unusual Honda–AMG association, but does not establish that Mercedes-Benz or AMG co-engineered the underlying Honda model.
How Honda’s South African Ballade program worked
Honda says automobile production in South Africa began in October 1982 with the four-door Ballade. Production was consigned to UCDD, which also sold the cars through its dealer network. Honda later expanded local production to include the three-door Civic and Ballade, described as the Civic four-door. Honda South Africa’s 2020 Ballade brochure also dates the model’s South African launch to 1982.

Honda reports approximately 175,000 sales of locally produced Honda vehicles over the 18 years through 2000. That total applies to the broader local production program, not to Ballades alone and certainly not to Ballade AMG cars. Honda’s account says the alliance with DaimlerChrysler South Africa, renamed from UCDD, was dissolved at the end of 2000. See Honda Global’s history of its African business.
What is known—and not established—about the AMG variants
Retrospective automotive accounts identify 160i and 180i Ballade AMG variants. However, the sources available here do not provide an authoritative AMG build count or a complete factory specification sheet. One account explicitly says the production total is unknown. Exact outputs, equipment, suspension changes, wheels, spoilers and variant chronology should therefore be treated as attributed reporting, not settled factory facts.

Why the car is often described too broadly
The story combines two distinct facts: Honda’s documented South African production arrangement with UCDD, and later automotive reporting that identifies AMG-associated Ballades. Calling it a car “built by Honda and Mercedes-Benz AMG” can imply a joint engineering project that the evidence does not substantiate. The more precise description is a South African Honda Ballade produced under the Honda–UCDD arrangement, with retrospective reports identifying AMG variants.
