Which Honda Civic Type R is fastest? There is no reliable, comparable set of official top-speed tests covering every generation, so a definitive maximum-speed ranking would overstate what is known. Ranked by the strongest documented circuit-performance evidence, the newer FL5 and FK8 lead—but their Nürburgring times use different course lengths and timing rules, so they cannot be compared as a clean head-to-head result.
How this Civic Type R speed ranking works
This is an editorial ranking of documented performance credentials, not the result of a controlled test. Nürburgring Nordschleife laps provide the most direct speed evidence available, but the recorded times differ in course length and verification format. Where a generation has no supplied lap time, its position reflects its documented powertrain and output—not a measured lap or top speed.
Horsepower figures also require care: Honda’s sources use both PS and hp, and some specifications refer to particular regional variants. Power is not a substitute for measured acceleration or maximum speed.

1. FL5 (2022–present): 7:44.881 on the full Nordschleife
Honda reported a 7-minute 44.881-second lap for the FL5 over the full 20.832 km Nürburgring Nordschleife in 2023. That format follows rules instituted in 2019, making it different from the earlier FK8 lap. Honda identifies the Michelin Pilot Sport 4 S as the standard tire and the Pilot Sport Cup 2 Connect as a jointly developed circuit-performance tire. These details describe the FL5; they do not establish tire fitment for earlier generations. Honda’s FL5 Nürburgring announcement reports the lap and tire information.

2. FK8 (2017–2022): 7:43.8 on the earlier course format
Honda recorded the FK8 development car at 7 minutes 43.8 seconds on April 3, 2017, using the older 20.600 km measurement format. Honda described the car as technically representative of production specification, but the test configuration included road-legal track-focused tires and a safety roll cage; the infotainment system and rear seats were temporarily removed to offset the cage’s weight. Honda quoted 320 PS and 400 Nm for the model. Its lower displayed lap time than the FL5’s does not prove the FK8 is quicker, because the distance and record format differ. 3. FK2 (2015–2017): 7:50.63; the first turbocharged Type R
Honda identifies the FK2 as the first turbocharged Civic Type R and reports 310 hp maximum output. Its development car recorded a 7-minute 50.63-second Nordschleife lap, according to Honda’s 2023 retrospective. The available figures make the FK2’s circuit credentials verifiable, but do not establish a comparable top-speed result. Honda’s Type R retrospective covers the FK2 alongside the earlier lineage.

4. FD2 (2007 generation): 225 PS at 8,000 rpm
The Japanese-market FD2 used a 2.0-liter K20A engine rated by Honda at 225 PS at 8,000 rpm. Honda’s historical specification establishes its output, not a directly comparable lap time or maximum speed. Keep it separate from the FN2: they were distinct market variants, not one identical car. Honda Japan’s FD2/FN2-era specifications distinguish their outputs.

5. EP3 (2001–2005): 215 PS in Honda Japan’s specification
Honda Japan lists the EP3 with a 2.0-liter DOHC i-VTEC engine producing 215 PS at 8,000 rpm and a six-speed manual. A separate Honda anniversary retrospective describes the K20A refinement as producing 225 horsepower in its EP3 discussion; that figure uses a different unit and source context, so it should not be silently substituted for the Japanese specification. No comparable lap or maximum-speed figure is established here. Honda Japan’s EP3 history provides the model specification.

6. FN2 (2007 generation): 201 PS at 7,800 rpm
Honda Japan lists the European-developed FN2 three-door at 201 PS at 7,800 rpm. Honda says this version was later sold in Japan in limited numbers. Its distinct specification is why combining the FN2 and FD2 into a single ranked entry would obscure a real market and performance difference. No directly comparable lap or top-speed measurement is established here. Honda Japan’s historical specifications list the FN2 figure, while Honda’s retrospective describes its development and sales context.

7. EK9 (1997–2000): 185 PS at 8,200 rpm
The original EK9 used a 1.6-liter DOHC VTEC engine rated by Honda at 185 PS at 8,200 rpm, with four-wheel double-wishbone suspension and body reinforcement. Those period specifications document the car’s high-revving character, but they do not provide a basis for comparing its top speed or lap performance with later generations. Honda Japan’s EK9 model information lists its engine and chassis details.

Why the Nürburgring times do not produce a simple winner
The FK8’s 7:43.8 is numerically quicker than the FL5’s 7:44.881, but the FK8 figure uses the older 20.600 km course format. Honda reports the FL5 time over 20.832 km under the rules instituted in 2019. The Nürburgring says it has officially recorded, confirmed and published lap records since the 2019 season. These are meaningful manufacturer-reported achievements, but different distances and verification formats prevent treating the times as a direct comparison. The Nürburgring’s record information describes its official record process.
Honda’s own account of the FK8 test also matters: its safety cage and track-focused road-legal tires were part of the test setup, while rear seats and infotainment were removed to offset the cage’s weight. That is not the same as claiming the timed car was an untouched customer vehicle.

What “fastest” can—and cannot—mean
- Maximum speed: The available evidence does not support an all-generation top-speed ranking based on comparable official tests.
- Circuit speed: Published Nordschleife laps provide the clearest performance evidence, but the FK2, FK8 and FL5 figures should be read with their test and course qualifications.
- Engine output: Honda’s historical specifications allow selected variants to be compared by stated power, provided units and markets remain explicit. Output alone does not establish acceleration or maximum speed.
For a track-focused FL5, Honda names the Pilot Sport Cup 2 Connect as a circuit-performance tire alongside the standard Pilot Sport 4 S. Tire choice can affect track performance, but owners should confirm size, load rating, market and vehicle fitment before choosing replacements.
