Ducati desmodromic valves are mechanically controlled on both their opening and closing strokes. Unlike a conventional valve train, which relies on a spring to close each valve, desmo uses a mechanical closing mechanism. Ducati developed the system for racing and cites control at high engine speeds as a key reason for using it—but not every Ducati engine uses desmodromic valves today.
How do desmodromic valves work?
In a conventional valve train, a cam opens a valve against a return spring; when the cam moves away, the spring pushes the valve closed. In a desmodromic system, mechanical components control both movements: one opens the valve and another positively drives it closed. The name refers to this controlled, or “desmodromic,” motion.
Ducati says the arrangement helps manage valve movement at high engine speeds, including the inertial loads associated with large valves. That is the engineering rationale behind its use in racing and in some current engines—not proof that desmo universally outperforms spring-return systems. The available Ducati material does not establish a controlled, general comparison of performance, reliability, cost, or lifespan between the two architectures.
How did desmo become a Ducati technology?
Taglioni’s racing work
Engineer Fabio Taglioni joined Ducati as technical director on 1 May 1954. Ducati’s account says he pursued desmodromic valve control for racing; it describes the 125 GP Desmo as the first motorcycle in its account to use the system. Ducati says the bike won its first Grand Prix a month after its debut. Ducati’s centenary history of Taglioni and its heritage biography recount his role.

The 125 Desmo and production motorcycles
Volkswagen Group dates development of the Ducati 125 Desmo to 1956 and describes its three-camshaft valve control. It records the bike’s Swedish Grand Prix victory on 15 July 1956. The same Ducati brand history says desmodromic valve control entered Ducati production motorcycles from 1968 onward. These milestones describe different stages: racing development and success came first, followed by production adoption.
Ducati’s biography credits Taglioni with introducing desmodromic distribution “for the first time in the motorcycling world.” That is the company’s account of his contribution to motorcycling; it should not be read as establishing that he invented the desmodromic principle in every field.

The system evolved with Ducati engines
Desmo was not a single engine design frozen in the 1950s. A later milestone was the 851, introduced in the late 1980s: a liquid-cooled twin with four valves per cylinder and electronic fuel injection. Ducati’s 851 Tricolore heritage history presents it as the road-going expression of the Desmoquattro milestone.
Do all Ducati motorcycles have desmodromic valves?
No. Ducati continues to use desmodromic actuation in engines such as the Superquadro Mono and Desmosedici Stradale. Its Superquadro Mono technical page connects desmo with controlling large-diameter valves at high rpm.

The V4 Granturismo, by contrast, uses a spring-return valve system. Ducati says materials, processing, and know-how developed through desmodromic engineering helped enable that design. Desmo is therefore an important part of Ducati’s engineering history, not a feature present in every current Ducati engine. The distinction is about how valves are actuated; the sources cited here do not support ranking one system as universally better.

- Package: 1pcs square hole tool and 1pcs hexagonal hole tool
- Size: Square hole tool size: 65 x 48 mm/ 2.56 x 1.89 inch; Square hole: 3 mm/ 0.12 in, 3.5 mm/ 0.14 in and 4 mm/ 0.16 in; Hexagonal hole tool size: 112 x 21 mm/ 4.4 x 0.83 inch; Hexagonal hole: 9 mm/ 0.35 in and 10 mm/ 0.39 in
- Made of: The motorcycle scooter valve tool is made of steel material, sturdy, wear resistant, not easy to deform, long service life
- Practical: 2 types of tools, allowing adjustment of hex screws and square screws
- Widely to Use: The valve adjustment tool is used to adjust motorcycle engine valve screw, suitable for most of motorcycle and scooters
| Engine family | Published valve-clearance interval | Source and qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Testastretta 11° family | 30,000 km | Ducati’s Testastretta page lists this interval for valve-clearance checks and adjustment on the described family. |
| V4 Granturismo | 60,000 km | Ducati’s V4 Granturismo page states this valve-clearance adjustment interval for that engine. |
These are engine-specific examples, not a Ducati-wide service rule. For a particular motorcycle, use its owner’s manual or service schedule and match the model, engine, model year, and applicable market. If you are preparing to do the work, use a workshop manual specifically suited to that motorcycle rather than assuming another Ducati’s procedure or interval applies.
Ducati also compares the V4 Granturismo’s 60,000 km interval with a stated sector average of 25,000 km. That is the manufacturer’s published comparison, not an independently established industry-wide statistic.
