The A90 GR Supra is the strongest modern alternative, while the A70, A60 and original A40/A50 each mark a defining step in the nameplate’s history. This ranking weighs each generation’s place in the lineage, distinct identity, documented performance and influence—not a single, controlled test comparison.
How the Supra generations rank
There is no Toyota-issued ranking of these generations. This is an enthusiast-oriented editorial order: it gives the most weight to historical significance, distinctiveness and lasting influence, while using published performance details as supporting evidence. The order would change for a design-only or performance-only list, and the specifications and sales dates below can vary by market and model year.
-
A80 Supra Turbo: the defining performance icon
The fourth-generation A80 takes the top spot because it combines a clear performance identity with an outsized legacy. Toyota’s launch material describes the Turbo’s 3.0-liter inline-six and twin sequential turbochargers, rating it at 320 hp and claiming a 0–60 mph time of under five seconds. Toyota later called the A80 “a benchmark sports/GT with supercar-level performance”—a manufacturer’s characterization, not an independent comparison. The A80 also inspired the 2020 GR Supra, connecting the modern car directly to this generation’s reputation. Toyota’s 2020 GR Supra announcement and Toyota’s Supra history provide the company’s account.
-
A90 GR Supra: the compelling modern revival
The fifth-generation A90 brought the Supra name back to the U.S. lineup after a long gap and made the heritage explicit: Toyota’s 2020 announcement notes that “A90” followed the A40, A60, A70 and A80 Supras. Toyota’s 2025 U.S. material reports 0–60 mph in 3.9 seconds for the eight-speed automatic and 4.2 seconds for the manual. Those are manufacturer figures, not independently instrumented results or a same-method comparison with the A80 Turbo. The A90 ranks second because its modern performance credentials are strong, but it has had less time to shape the nameplate’s history. Toyota USA Newsroom’s 2025 GR Supra material covers its configurations.

A70 Supra: the nameplate stands on its own
The third-generation A70 matters because Toyota’s U.S. history identifies it as the point when Supra became its own model rather than part of the Celica range. That change gave the car a more distinct place in Toyota’s sports-car lineup and set up the later generations’ separate identity. The A70 is an important turning point even if it is less celebrated than the A80 for performance legacy. Toyota’s U.S. Supra history describes the shift.
-
A60 Supra: an early design and engineering statement
The second-generation A60 earns fourth place for its recognizable design and substantial technical step forward. Toyota’s history highlights its 2.8-liter twin-cam engine, independent rear suspension and retractable headlights. These features helped distinguish the Supra from its origins as a Celica derivative and made the A60 a memorable early expression of the model’s character. Toyota’s history of the Supra outlines these changes.

A40/A50 Celica Supra: where the lineage began
The first-generation A40/A50 is last in this ranking, not least in historical importance. It began as a longer, wider, six-cylinder Celica derivative, establishing the formula from which later Supras developed. Toyota’s historical material also notes that it used the company’s first production engine with electronic fuel injection. The launch date depends on how market and model-year conventions are described: Toyota’s U.S. lineage account dates the first generation to 1979, while other Toyota retrospectives describe its debut as 1978. Those references do not support one universal date for every market. Toyota’s U.S. history and Toyota’s retrospective reflect the different descriptions.
What the performance figures do—and do not—show
The headline figures make the A80 Turbo and A90 look close in straight-line acceleration, but they are not a controlled, generation-to-generation test. Toyota’s under-five-second A80 claim and its 2025 A90 transmission-specific times come from different announcements and are not established as measurements made with a common protocol. They support each car’s performance story; they cannot settle which is objectively quicker.

Why the ranking can change for different enthusiasts
- If design is your priority: the A60’s retractable-headlight styling and early-generation character may deserve a higher place.
- If performance is your priority: compare specific model years, engines and transmissions rather than treating a generation as one uniform car. The available Toyota acceleration claims are not common-protocol test results.
- If lineage and influence matter most: the A70’s separation from Celica and the A40/A50’s role in starting the nameplate become central, even though they rank lower here.
What to know about the final A90 editions
Late-run A90 announcements are market-specific. Toyota’s European newsroom announced an A90 Final Edition and upgraded Lightweight EVO for 2025, with regional timing and availability; Toyota Global separately announced a partially upgraded 3.0-liter model and A90 Final Edition, scheduled sequentially from spring 2025. These announcements do not establish current stock or worldwide availability. Check the relevant national Toyota site for the market and model year you have in mind. Toyota Europe newsroom and Toyota Global newsroom published the regional announcements; Toyota’s U.S. Supra model index lists U.S. model-year entries.
