GM’s 4.2-liter Atlas I-6 was an unusual engine for the early-2000s SUV market. Known by its RPO code LL8 and marketed as the Vortec 4200, it used an aluminum block and head, dual overhead camshafts, four valves per cylinder, coil-on-plug ignition, electronic throttle control, and variable valve timing. In an era when many American SUVs still relied on pushrod V6s and V8s, GM put a high-revving inline-six in the front of the TrailBlazer and its GMT360 relatives.
The engine is now largely forgotten, but it was not an ordinary truck six. Its strengths, its awkward service layout, and several frequently misdiagnosed faults make the LL8 worth understanding before buying, repairing, or swapping one.
What exactly is the Atlas LL8?
The LL8 is a 4.2-liter, 256-cubic-inch gasoline inline-six. GM assigned it the RPO code LL8, while the VIN identifies the engine with the code S. “Vortec 4200” was the marketing name; it was not a V8 or a traditional Chevrolet straight-six redesigned with a few modern parts.
GM introduced the engine for the 2002 Chevrolet TrailBlazer and GMC Envoy. It then appeared in the Buick Rainier, Isuzu Ascender, and Saab 9-7X, all related to the GMT360 SUV architecture. The LL8 remained available in that vehicle family through the 2009 model year, including the 2009 Saab 9-7X 4.2i.

| Specification | LL8 detail |
|---|---|
| Configuration | Inline six-cylinder |
| Displacement | 4.2 L / 256 cu in |
| RPO code | LL8 |
| VIN engine code | S |
| Bore × stroke | 93 mm × 102 mm |
| Compression ratio | 10.3:1 |
| Valvetrain | DOHC, four valves per cylinder |
| Construction | Aluminum block and aluminum cylinder head |
| Fuel system | Sequential multiport fuel injection |
| Launch transmission | Four-speed automatic |
The 102-mm stroke made the engine relatively long-stroke, which helped provide useful torque for an SUV. Its aluminum construction also reduced weight compared with a conventional cast-iron truck engine. The inline layout gave the engine excellent primary balance, although the long package and rear-mounted timing hardware created packaging and repair compromises.
Power ratings depended on the application
There is no single horsepower figure that accurately describes every LL8. GM revised the engine and its calibration during the production run, and ratings varied by model, year, emissions strategy, and testing convention.
| Application | Published output |
|---|---|
| 2002 TrailBlazer and Envoy | 270 hp |
| 2006 Chevrolet TrailBlazer | 291 hp at 6,000 rpm; 277 lb-ft at 4,800 rpm |
| 2009 Saab 9-7X 4.2i | 285 hp at 6,000 rpm; 276 lb-ft at 4,600 rpm |
That spread is why “the 4.2 makes 291 horsepower” is an incomplete claim. It is correct for the cited 2006 TrailBlazer rating, but not for the 2002 launch engine or every later vehicle. When comparing a used engine or replacement computer, identify the donor vehicle and model year instead of relying only on the Vortec 4200 name.
A modern design hiding in a truck SUV
The LL8 was a clean-sheet design rather than an updated version of GM’s older pushrod sixes. Its dual overhead camshafts operated four valves per cylinder, and coil-on-plug ignition placed an individual ignition coil over each spark plug. Electronic throttle control replaced a conventional cable, while variable valve timing allowed the engine computer to adjust camshaft timing as operating conditions changed.

These features helped GM produce strong specific output from a naturally aspirated six-cylinder engine. The tradeoff was complexity. Compared with a simple pushrod engine, the LL8 has more sensors, more valvetrain hardware, more precise oil-control requirements, and tighter packaging around the cylinder head and timing system.
The LL8 was the six-cylinder member of GM’s Atlas family. The family also included the 3.5-liter inline-five and 2.8-liter inline-four. They shared design and manufacturing ideas, but they are not interchangeable engines in the casual sense. Displacement, engine management, accessories, calibration, and vehicle packaging differ. A four- or five-cylinder Atlas part should not be assumed to fit an LL8 without confirmation from an application-specific GM parts catalog.
The timing-chain location makes repairs different
One of the LL8’s most notable service characteristics is the location of its timing components at the rear of the engine, next to the transmission. That arrangement can make timing-chain work labor-intensive because access is far worse than on an engine with its chain or belt behind the front accessory drive.
This does not mean every LL8 needs premature chain replacement. A camshaft-correlation code is a reason to diagnose the timing system, not an automatic instruction to remove the engine or transmission. Before condemning the chain, a technician should consider:

- Camshaft and crankshaft position sensors
- Variable-valve-timing actuators and oil-control components
- Wiring, connectors, and power or ground faults
- Oil level, oil condition, and restricted oil passages
- Incorrect timing after previous repair
- Actual chain, guide, or tensioner wear
Codes such as P0016 and P1345 can point toward cam/crank correlation or related control problems, but neither code proves that the timing chain itself has failed.
Misfires: do not start by replacing every coil
LL8 vehicles can produce rough running and misfire codes from several different systems. The code range P0300 through P0306 covers random and cylinder-specific misfires, but the code alone does not identify the failed component.
GM service information addressed an air injection reaction system issue on LL8-powered vehicles. A fault in the secondary-air-injection system can trigger an illuminated or flashing malfunction indicator lamp, rough idle, and misfire codes. That documented diagnostic path matters because a technician who immediately installs six new ignition coils may spend money without repairing the cause.
A sensible diagnostic sequence is:
- Scan for all stored and pending codes, not just the first misfire code displayed.
- Record freeze-frame data and determine whether the misfire is random or limited to one cylinder.
- Check the ignition coil, plug, injector, wiring, and compression for a cylinder-specific fault.
- Inspect the secondary-air-injection system when the symptoms and codes match the applicable GM service information.
- Test camshaft timing and variable-valve-timing operation if correlation or timing-related codes are present.
A flashing check-engine light indicates an active misfire that can damage the catalytic converter. The vehicle should not be driven normally until the cause is found.

What the LL8 is—and is not
| Claim | More accurate explanation |
|---|---|
| “The Vortec 4200 is a V8.” | It is a gasoline inline-six. Vortec is GM marketing terminology, not a cylinder-layout designation. |
| “Every LL8 makes 291 hp.” | Output varies. Examples include 270 hp in 2002, 291 hp in the 2006 TrailBlazer, and 285 hp in the 2009 Saab 9-7X. |
| “It is an old Chevrolet truck straight-six.” | It is a clean-sheet aluminum DOHC engine with four valves per cylinder and variable valve timing. |
| “All Atlas engines interchange.” | The 2.8-liter, 3.5-liter, and 4.2-liter engines require application-specific parts and controls. |
| “P0016 or P1345 automatically means a bad chain.” | The codes require diagnosis of sensors, wiring, oil control, variable valve timing, installation, and mechanical timing. |
Buying a GMT360 with an LL8
The engine should be evaluated as part of the entire vehicle. TrailBlazers, Envoys, Rainiers, Ascenders, and 9-7Xs are now old vehicles, so condition and maintenance history matter more than the badge on the engine cover.
- Verify the engine and application. Check the VIN, RPO information, and service records. Do not assume a replacement engine has the same accessories, sensors, calibration, or emissions equipment as the original.
- Scan before buying. Look for current, pending, and history codes. Pay particular attention to misfire and cam/crank-correlation faults, while remembering that codes identify diagnostic direction rather than a guaranteed failed part.
- Listen and observe during a cold start. Check for rough idle, persistent misfire, unusual timing noise, smoke, warning lights, and evidence of neglected oil changes.
- Confirm drivability when warm. A vehicle that starts cleanly cold can develop a fault after closed-loop operation or once the engine reaches operating temperature.
- Check vehicle-level systems separately. GMT360 problems are not automatically engine problems. For example, NHTSA recall 15V-519, also identified by GM as recall 14291, concerned a headlamp driver module that could cause low-beam headlamp and daytime running lamp failures. It was not an LL8 internal-engine recall.
- Run the VIN through NHTSA’s recall lookup. Recall status belongs to the specific vehicle, so a general reputation or forum post is not a substitute for a VIN check.
Why it disappeared
The LL8 belonged to a specific period in GM’s product strategy: a naturally aspirated, technologically ambitious inline-six installed in midsize SUVs. It offered smoothness and respectable power without the size and weight of a V8, but it also brought expensive access and diagnosis challenges as these vehicles aged.
By the end of the GMT360 era, the engine’s application had effectively ended. The current Chevrolet Trailblazer is unrelated to those early SUVs and uses modern turbocharged engines. Calling the LL8 a current-production TrailBlazer engine is therefore incorrect; the name survives mainly in used-vehicle, repair, and engine-swap discussions.
FAQ
Is GM’s 4.2-liter Atlas the same as the Vortec 4200?
Yes. Vortec 4200 is the marketing name for the 4.2-liter Atlas inline-six, whose formal GM RPO code is LL8. It is a gasoline inline-six, not a V8.

How much horsepower does the LL8 make?
The rating depends on the vehicle and year. The 2002 TrailBlazer and Envoy were listed at 270 hp, the 2006 TrailBlazer at 291 hp, and the 2009 Saab 9-7X 4.2i at 285 hp.
Are P0016 and P1345 proof that an LL8 needs a timing chain?
No. They indicate a cam/crank-correlation or related control problem. Sensors, wiring, oil control, variable valve timing, incorrect installation, and actual chain wear can produce related symptoms and must be distinguished through testing.
Which vehicles used the LL8 engine?
The LL8 was used in the Chevrolet TrailBlazer, GMC Envoy, Buick Rainier, Isuzu Ascender, and Saab 9-7X. It was introduced for the 2002 model year and remained available in the GMT360 family through 2009.
The Bottom Line
The Atlas LL8 was one of GM’s more distinctive modern truck engines: a 4.2-liter aluminum DOHC inline-six with four valves per cylinder, variable valve timing, and application-specific power ratings ranging from the 270-hp launch version to later ratings near 291 hp. It is smoother and more sophisticated than the pushrod sixes many buyers expected, but its rear-mounted timing hardware and broad range of possible misfire causes make careless diagnosis expensive.
