The Buick Roadmaster Estate is the best-known face of a family of big, rear-wheel-drive GM wagons that also included the Chevrolet Caprice wagon and Oldsmobile Custom Cruiser. One member of that family has a documented 5,000-pound towing figure: the 1992 Oldsmobile Custom Cruiser with its optional towing package. That number should not be treated as a rating for every Roadmaster or Caprice wagon. For the later Roadmaster Estate, the evidence establishes a strong V8 and towing-package hardware, but not a verified maximum tow rating.
Which wagon is the title pointing to?
The likely answer is the Buick Roadmaster Estate, especially the 1994–1996 version with its 5.7-liter LT1 V8. It belonged to a related GM full-size wagon family that included the Chevrolet Caprice wagon and Oldsmobile Custom Cruiser. A 1991 UPI report described the redesigned Custom Cruiser as sharing its basic design with the Caprice and Roadmaster Estate, and a 1992 newspaper caption also grouped the wagons by their shared body. UPI, July 14, 1991 1992 newspaper caption
They were not interchangeable for towing purposes. A shared basic design does not establish identical engines, equipment, or tow ratings, so any capacity claim needs to name the model year and configuration it applies to.
What towing capacity is actually documented?
Consumer Guide Auto reports that a 1992 Oldsmobile Custom Cruiser equipped with the optional towing package could tow up to 5,000 pounds. The source does not establish that rating for every Custom Cruiser configuration, nor does it verify the same figure for a Buick Roadmaster Estate or Chevrolet Caprice wagon. That distinction matters if you are shopping for a Roadmaster. DrivingLine describes the Roadmaster’s towing-package equipment but does not give a maximum capacity. Without a year- and configuration-specific GM towing guide or owner’s manual, the Custom Cruiser’s 5,000-pound figure is not a sound basis for deciding what a particular Buick can tow.
Why the later Roadmaster Estate had towing appeal
LT1 power in the 1994–1996 wagon
DrivingLine reports that every 1994, 1995, and 1996 Roadmaster Estate used a 5.7-liter LT1 V8 rated at 260 horsepower and 300 lb-ft of torque. The engine was a modified version of the Corvette LT1, with iron heads and a cam profile adjusted for low-end torque. DrivingLine, “The Buick Roadmaster Estate: A Big Wagon With Muscle” (2018)

Towing-package hardware
For those Roadmaster years, DrivingLine says the optional towing package added improved engine cooling and 2.93:1 gearing. Rear air shocks, which helped keep the rear of the wagon level, and a locking differential were also available. These details explain why a properly equipped Roadmaster could be attractive for hauling, but they do not substitute for a verified tow rating for the specific car.
It was a practical family wagon, not just a tow vehicle
The Roadmaster Estate combined its V8 with substantial passenger and cargo utility. Hagerty reports that the 1992 Roadmaster Estate Wagon offered 92.4 cubic feet of cargo space with the second and third seats folded. Hagerty: 1992 Buick Roadmaster Estate Wagon

The related Oldsmobile had its own useful layout. Consumer Guide says the 1991–1992 Custom Cruiser seated eight and could carry a 4-by-8-foot sheet of plywood with the middle and rear seats folded. The dimensions and seating details are specific to the Oldsmobile, not a guarantee for every wagon in the family. Consumer Guide Auto: 1991–1992 Oldsmobile Custom Cruiser
How to evaluate one before towing
- Identify the exact model year and model. Confirm whether the car is a Roadmaster Estate, Caprice wagon, or Custom Cruiser; their shared basic design does not prove they share a tow rating.
- Verify the engine and towing equipment. Check the vehicle’s documentation and equipment rather than relying on an appearance package or a seller’s description. The 5,000-pound figure applies to the 1992 Custom Cruiser with its optional towing package.
- Find documentation for that specific configuration. Use the applicable owner’s manual or manufacturer towing guide to confirm the rating and any conditions. Do not use the Custom Cruiser figure as a stand-in for a Roadmaster rating.
- Inspect the suspension and age-related condition. If considering replacement Roadmaster rear air shocks, first establish whether the particular car has that setup and confirm fitment for its year and configuration. A classic wagon’s present condition is part of its towing suitability.
Why these wagons faded from the mainstream
When the redesigned wagons arrived, Buick Roadmaster, Chevrolet Caprice, and Oldsmobile Custom Cruiser sat at the upper end of the station-wagon market, according to a December 1990 Grosse Pointe News feature. By July 1991, UPI was describing the Custom Cruiser as aimed at the shrinking group of buyers who still preferred a traditional wagon to a minivan or SUV. Grosse Pointe News, December 27, 1990 UPI, July 14, 1991 Their appeal today is easy to understand: they offered large-car space and V8 power in a long-roof body, while towing capability depended on the precise model and equipment.
