Ford’s European figures include up to 43 km of electric range, 281 PS and 697 Nm. But the official material available does not establish whether Ford will sell it in the U.S.—so “forbidden fruit” describes the gap American shoppers face, not a confirmed U.S. ban or cancellation.
Is the Ford Ranger PHEV coming to the U.S.?
Ford announced the Ranger PHEV in September 2024, initially expecting deliveries from spring 2025. By June 2025, Ford said deliveries were underway in Europe. Ford also said the truck would be produced in Silverton, South Africa. Those announcements establish an overseas launch, but do not confirm a U.S. launch or a decision to cancel one. The most accurate answer for American buyers is that U.S. availability remains unresolved in the official sources cited here.
Ford’s launch information covers European markets, while a separate brochure covers Australia. Those are not U.S. specifications or ordering details, and the figures should not be treated as U.S. EPA ratings, trim offerings, pricing, or confirmation that an export-market vehicle can be registered and supported in America.
What does the Ranger plug-in hybrid include?
Ford’s 2024 announcement describes a 2.3-litre EcoBoost petrol engine, a 10-speed automatic transmission and a 75 kW electric motor integrated into a Modular Hybrid Transmission. The usable lithium-ion battery capacity is 11.8 kWh. Ford’s stated figures changed between announcements and are market-specific, so they are best read with their source and date rather than combined into one universal specification.

| Specification | Ford’s stated figure | Context |
|---|---|---|
| Electric range | Up to 43 km | Ford of Europe’s June 2025 launch update; WLTP figure |
| Combined output | 281 PS | Ford of Europe, June 2025 |
| Combined torque | 697 Nm | Ford of Europe, June 2025 |
| Usable battery capacity | 11.8 kWh | Ford Pro Europe, 2024 |
| Earlier announced output and range target | 279 PS; more than 45 km | Ford’s September 2024 announcement; not the later European launch figures |
These are manufacturer specifications, not independent test results. The 43 km figure is a standardized European WLTP result, not a U.S. EPA rating or a guaranteed distance in everyday driving. Ford’s 2026 European model update says actual range can vary with weather, driving style, route, vehicle condition, battery age and battery condition.
Can it still tow and work like a Ranger?
Ford describes the European Ranger PHEV as a working pickup as well as a plug-in hybrid. For the European launch, Ford cited up to one tonne of payload and towing up to 3,500 kg, alongside e-4WD, a dual-range transfer case and a rear differential lock. Ford’s Australian MY2025.75 brochure also lists a maximum braked towing capacity of 3,500 kg. These are market- and configuration-specific manufacturer claims, not a guarantee for every trim or load.

Actual payload and towing limits depend on the vehicle’s configuration and local homologation, as well as passenger and cargo weight. Ford’s Australian brochure describes an indicative model-year lineup and notes that production variations may affect specifications. U.S. buyers should not assume these overseas ratings apply to a U.S.-market truck that Ford has not confirmed.
How does charging and onboard power work?
Ford said the battery could be charged in under four hours using a single-phase 16 amp charger. The UK product page lists Pro Power Onboard options of 2.3 kW and 6.9 kW, with the higher output intended for heavier equipment. These are overseas-market details: they do not establish compatibility with U.S. charging cables, receptacles or electrical equipment.

Why is the Ranger PHEV called “forbidden fruit”?
The phrase captures the mismatch between an appealing, electrified version of a familiar midsize pickup and its documented availability outside the U.S. It should not be read as evidence that Ford has formally barred the model from America. Ford’s overseas announcements explain what the truck offers where it is sold; they do not settle whether U.S. buyers will eventually be able to order one.
Ford Pro Europe general manager Hans Schep described the 2024 model as bringing “the benefits of electrification hand-in-hand with the hard-working performance that has built Ranger a loyal fanbase in Europe.” The combination is the central pitch: electric driving for some trips, with a petrol engine and pickup hardware for broader use. Whether that combination becomes a U.S. purchase option remains unconfirmed.

What U.S. shoppers should verify before importing one
An overseas Ranger PHEV should not be treated as a ready-to-buy U.S. alternative on the strength of its European or Australian specifications. Before pursuing one, a buyer would need confirmed information about U.S. registration eligibility, charging compatibility, service and parts support, warranty coverage, and the exact vehicle’s local specifications. The sources cited here do not establish those details.
For a useful comparison with any other plug-in pickup, match the market and trim and check electric range on the same test cycle, battery capacity and charging rate, towing and payload ratings, off-road hardware, and access to servicing, parts and warranty. A range number from a European WLTP test should not be compared directly with a figure from a different test cycle as if the results were equivalent.
