It paired styling cues drawn from classic Mustangs with a new platform, then expanded from V6 and GT models to track-focused and supercharged performance cars. Its most powerful factory model was the 2013–14 Shelby GT500, rated by Ford at 662 horsepower—not a figure that describes the whole generation.
What is an S197 Mustang?
S197 is the name commonly used for the fifth-generation Mustang. Ford’s 2013 milestone history dates the generation to 2005–2014 and says production of the all-new 2005 model began in fall 2004 at Flat Rock, Michigan. Ford described its platform as all-new and the first in Mustang history unique to the model; that is Ford’s characterization in its historical account.
The car’s design made its heritage visible without simply reproducing an earlier Mustang. Ford highlighted a forward-leaning grille, a side “hockey stick” contour and tri-bar taillamps as cues drawn from the marque’s past. The result gave the new car a recognizable Mustang identity while establishing a more contemporary shape.
How the S197 Mustang evolved
2005: a V6 or GT launch lineup
The 2005 range opened with two distinct engine choices: a 4.0-liter V6 rated by Ford at 210 horsepower and a 4.6-liter, three-valve-per-cylinder V8 in the GT rated at 300 horsepower. These are factory ratings for the launch models, not figures for every S197 or later engine. Ford’s 2013 Mustang milestone history documents the generation’s launch and key developments.

2007: the Shelby GT500 returns
Ford and Carroll Shelby announced the GT500’s return at the 2005 New York International Auto Show for the 2007 model year. The Shelby added a high-performance flagship to a range that had begun with V6 and GT choices. Shelby American’s retrospective reports that 2007 GT500 sales approached 11,000 and that nearly 23,000 were sold across model years 2007–09; those sales figures are Shelby American’s, rather than Ford’s. Shelby American’s GT500 history covers the model’s development.
2010: revised styling and a stronger GT500
The 2010 GT500 received updated front and rear styling, revised suspension tuning, six-speed gearing and a 3.55:1 rear axle, according to Shelby American. Its supercharged 5.4-liter V8 was rated at 540 horsepower. These changes describe the GT500, not every Mustang trim for 2010.

2012: the Boss 302 returns
Ford’s milestone history calls out the Boss 302’s return to the lineup for 2012, more than 40 years after its earlier appearance. Ford described it as the best-handling Mustang to that point. That superlative is Ford’s own historical claim, not an independently established comparison here. The Boss and Shelby GT500 were different branches of the performance range: the Boss represented a track-focused direction, while the GT500 was the high-output, supercharged flagship.
2013–14: the generation’s power peak
The final S197 Shelby GT500 used a supercharged 5.8-liter V8 rated by Ford at 662 horsepower. Ford’s milestone history and Shelby American’s retrospective identify the 2013–14 GT500 as the generation’s high-output finale. The rating belongs to that specialty model, not to the V6, GT or Boss 302 lineup as a whole.

Which S197 Mustang engines and performance versions matter?
The generation’s performance story is a ladder rather than a single specification. The launch V6 and GT established the everyday and V8 entry points; specialty models later pushed performance in different directions.
| Model or milestone | Engine and factory rating | What distinguishes it |
|---|---|---|
| 2005 V6 | 4.0-liter V6; 210 horsepower, Ford rating | One of the two launch choices. |
| 2005 GT | 4.6-liter three-valve-per-cylinder V8; 300 horsepower, Ford rating | V8 launch model. |
| 2010 Shelby GT500 | Supercharged 5.4-liter V8; 540 horsepower, Shelby American rating | GT500-specific updates included revised styling and suspension tuning. |
| 2012 Boss 302 | Exact engine specification and rating not stated in the cited milestone material. | Returned to the lineup after more than 40 years; Ford characterized it as the best-handling Mustang to that point. |
| 2013–14 Shelby GT500 | Supercharged 5.8-liter V8; 662 horsepower, Ford rating | The generation’s highest factory horsepower rating among the models covered here. |
Ratings in the table are the figures reported by Ford or Shelby American for the identified model; they should not be used to infer exact equipment, performance or condition for an individual used car.

Boss 302 or Shelby GT500: how are they different?
They are not interchangeable names for one top trim. The Boss 302 marked a track-focused strand of the lineup and returned for 2012. The Shelby GT500 was the supercharged, high-output flagship, culminating in the 662-horsepower 2013–14 model. Ford’s description of the Boss as the best-handling Mustang of its time is an attributed claim, while the GT500’s horsepower figure is a factory rating; neither alone establishes which used car is better for a particular driver.
How to compare S197 model years
A useful comparison starts by narrowing the question rather than treating all 2005–2014 Mustangs as one car. The generation included different styling phases, engines and intended uses, and the available historical specifications here do not establish a complete year-by-year equipment or reliability ranking.
Best Value
- Styling: distinguish the early 2005–09 cars from the refreshed 2010–14 appearance.
- Engine and induction: identify whether the car is a V6, GT V8 or specialty V8, and whether that engine is naturally aspirated or supercharged.
- Intended use: compare an everyday road car with a Boss-oriented track model or a high-output Shelby according to how you plan to drive it.
- Specific car: verify the exact model year, trim, factory equipment and condition before relying on a general-generation description.
The historical sources summarized here do not provide a complete trim, transmission, chassis or production-count specification table. For a particular car, those details need model-year-specific confirmation rather than assumptions based on the S197 name alone.
