The Federal $7,500 EV Tax Credit Expired: What Buyers With Earlier Contracts Need to Know

The federal new clean vehicle credit expired for vehicles acquired after September 30, 2025. Buyers with earlier contracts may still have a claim to check, but the deadline alone does not guarantee eligibility.

The federal new clean vehicle tax credit is no longer available for vehicles acquired after September 30, 2025. The deadline in the original headline has passed. A buyer who acquired a qualifying vehicle by that date may still be able to claim the credit—even if they took possession later—but the date alone does not establish eligibility.

When did the $7,500 EV tax credit end?

The cutoff for the federal new clean vehicle credit under Section 30D was September 30, 2025. The IRS says the credit “will not be allowed for any vehicle acquired after September 30, 2025.” The change followed Public Law 119-21, commonly known as the One Big Beautiful Bill Act. See the IRS termination and acquisition FAQs.

The same cutoff applies to the previously-owned clean vehicle credit and the qualified commercial clean vehicle credit. This article focuses on the new-vehicle credit; the IRS lists all three in its clean vehicle tax credit guidance.

What did “up to $7,500” mean?

The $7,500 figure was the maximum new clean vehicle credit, not an automatic rebate for every EV or buyer. Eligibility depended on applicable vehicle and taxpayer requirements. The IRS’s guidance for new clean vehicles purchased in 2023 or later explains the credit and its requirements. A vehicle acquired after the cutoff cannot qualify for this federal credit, even if it otherwise met the rules.

How does the IRS define “acquired”?

For these expiring clean vehicle credits, the IRS says acquisition occurs when the buyer enters into a written binding contract and makes a payment. A nominal down payment or trade-in can count as payment under the IRS explanation. Both the contract and payment must have occurred by September 30, 2025 to establish acquisition by the deadline.

A purchase, contract, or payment made after that date does not restore access to the expired credit. Check the IRS’s FAQ on what “acquired” means if your paperwork or payment timing is unclear.

Can a vehicle delivered after the deadline still qualify?

Possibly. A vehicle acquired by the cutoff may be placed in service later and remain potentially eligible if all other requirements are met. The IRS defines “placed in service” as taking possession. Acquisition by the deadline is therefore not, by itself, enough to claim the credit: the vehicle must also be placed in service, and the other eligibility and filing rules still apply.

What should buyers with an earlier transaction check?

Review the records and requirements for the tax year in which you are claiming the credit. These checks can help establish whether your transaction may qualify, but none guarantees a credit:

Does the federal deadline settle state or utility incentives?

No. This cutoff concerns the federal clean vehicle credits. It does not establish whether a state, utility, or manufacturer offer is available; check the terms of any separate program directly.
