The 2026 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray is the clearest speed-and-price standout in the available evidence: Chevrolet lists a $70,000 starting MSRP and says an appropriately equipped Stingray can reach 60 mph in 2.9 seconds. That is a manufacturer-published figure, not an independent test result. The comparison below separates it from publication-tested Mustang results and other sports cars whose available figures do not support a direct speed ranking.
Here, “under $80,000” means a published starting price below that amount, not a guarantee that a specific car will cost less than $80,000 out the door. Options, destination charges, dealer adjustments, taxes, and fees can raise the amount paid. Prices also vary by source, so each figure is attributed.
Which sports car is fastest under $80,000?
The Corvette Stingray is the strongest-supported answer if “fastest” means a compelling combination of acceleration and top speed. Chevrolet’s 2026 model page lists a starting price of $70,000, an available 0–60 mph time of 2.9 seconds, and a 194 mph top track speed. Those are Chevrolet’s published specifications; the 0–60 figure is not presented here as an independently verified test.
Car and Driver lists the 2026 Stingray at a different starting price, $72,495, and ranks it first in its high-performance sports-car category. Keep the two prices distinct: they are figures from separate sources, not a single reconciled MSRP. The outlet’s ranking reflects more than straight-line speed, combining instrumented tests with editorial impressions across roughly 200 data points, including acceleration, handling, comfort, cargo space, fuel efficiency, value, and enjoyment.

No reviewed source supplies a complete, apples-to-apples leaderboard of every eligible 2026 sports car, with matching trim prices, independently tested acceleration, and top speeds. The Stingray is therefore the best-supported lead here, not a claim that every qualifying car has been conclusively tested against it under identical conditions.
How the strongest candidates compare
| Model and evidence | Price information | Acceleration or speed evidence | What the figure establishes |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2026 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray — Chevrolet specifications | $70,000 starting price (Chevrolet) | Available 0–60 mph in 2.9 seconds; 194 mph top track speed (Chevrolet) | Manufacturer-published performance figures; not an independent test result. |
| 2026 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray — Car and Driver ranking | $72,495 starting price (Car and Driver) | No separate 0–60 result stated in the cited ranking. | Ranked first in the publication’s high-performance sports-car category; ranking considers multiple attributes, not acceleration alone. |
| 2026 Ford Mustang — Car and Driver instrumented tests | A qualifying price for each tested configuration is not stated in the reviewed test material. | GT automatic with performance exhaust: 3.7 seconds; GT manual: 4.2 seconds; EcoBoost: 4.5 seconds; Dark Horse: 4.1 seconds, all 0–60 mph. | Publication test results for the named configurations. Do not apply one trim’s result to every Mustang. |
| 2026 Toyota GR Supra — Car and Driver ranking | $59,595 starting price (Car and Driver) | A comparable 0–60 or top-speed figure is not stated in the reviewed ranking. | Its price and ranking description do not establish a numerical speed position against the Stingray. |
| 2026 BMW M2 — Car and Driver under-$100,000 listing | $69,550–$99,950 listed range (Car and Driver) | A comparable 0–60 or top-speed figure is not stated in the reviewed listing. | The range crosses the $80,000 cutoff; only a configuration whose current price is below the limit qualifies. |
| Toyota GR86 — Car and Driver test | A matching price for the tested configuration is not stated in the reviewed test material. | Six-speed manual: 5.4 seconds to 60 mph and a 14.0-second quarter-mile; the automatic Car and Driver tested in 2022 took 0.7 seconds longer to 60 mph. | Configuration-specific test results; the slower automatic result is from a 2022 test, not a 2026 retest. |
What the test results say about the Mustang
The Mustang has the most detailed independent acceleration comparison among the alternatives in this evidence. Car and Driver describes the 2026 range as including a 315-hp turbocharged four-cylinder and a 480-hp 5.0-liter V-8 in GT models. At its test track, the publication recorded 3.7 seconds to 60 mph for a GT automatic with performance exhaust, 4.2 seconds for a GT manual, 4.5 seconds for EcoBoost, and 4.1 seconds for Dark Horse.

Those times are not interchangeable: transmission, trim, and equipment matter. Car and Driver also reports that the Dark Horse completed a 0-to-150-to-0-mph run in 29.7 seconds and beat a Toyota Supra 3.0 in that particular test. That result describes the publication’s specific comparison; it does not establish a general top-speed ranking for all Mustangs or Supras.

BMW M2
Car and Driver gives the 2026 BMW M2 a listed price range of $69,550 to $99,950. Because the range spans both sides of the budget, “the M2 is under $80,000” is too broad. Check the price of the exact trim and configuration before treating it as eligible; a version priced above $80,000 does not meet this article’s starting-price ceiling in practice.

Lower-priced sports cars
Car and Driver’s 2026 sports-car ranking lists starting prices of $37,055 for the Subaru BRZ, $32,695 for the Toyota GR86, and $31,665 for the Mazda MX-5 Miata. These prices show that the category includes much less expensive choices, but price alone does not make any of them one of the fastest. The reviewed sources do not provide matching acceleration and top-speed results for all three.

How to interpret “fastest” before you buy
- Separate acceleration from top speed. A 0–60 mph time measures launch and acceleration over a short distance; a top-speed figure describes a different kind of performance. The Stingray is the only candidate here with both a manufacturer-published 0–60 figure and top track speed.
- Check who produced the number. Chevrolet’s Stingray figures are manufacturer specifications. The Mustang and GR86 times above are Car and Driver test results for specific vehicles. Neither type of number should be mistaken for a directly comparable result obtained under one common test protocol.
- Match the configuration. Verify the model year, trim, transmission, tires, and performance equipment. The Mustang’s GT automatic and manual times differ, and the 2026 M2’s price range includes configurations above the cap.
- Confirm the price you can actually buy. A starting MSRP below $80,000 does not ensure that a configured vehicle or the final transaction stays below that amount. Check the exact build and selling price, including destination, options, dealer adjustments, taxes, and fees.
- Look beyond a single acceleration number. Car and Driver’s rankings also consider handling, comfort, cargo space, fuel efficiency, value, and enjoyment. Those factors can matter more than a small difference in a 0–60 result for a car used every day.
